- The latest research is in (yet to be published) from Dr Bruce Bugbees team in the crop laboratory in Utah State University. It shows temperature is the most important factor in the quality of your yield.
In short they recommend starting warm and finishing cool.

Personally, I like to keep my flower rooms around 82 degrees F throughout all of flower. I find the herb has much better effects than when I make it colder, like in the 70s... I can set my room to any temp desired, and it just puts out much better herb at higher temperatures. Lab testing with very high results at a strict lab, got a few trophies for the flower... don't believe the science. Of course, it will depend on what strain you grow, how you grow them, etc. I grow all organic, and mostly sativa influenced hybrids, some landraces, etc. and they generally come out much stronger with heat. In the past when I couldn't control my temp as precisely, I had grows where the temps were higher than I wanted, like near 90. Some strains do better, and some do worse. My suspicion is that the strains tested by Bugbee are simply strains that aren't very heat tolerant, although it may also have to do with the feeding or other environmental conditions favoring those results for him. It cannot be applied to all of cannabis fairly, and neither could my results. There are so many factors.
yeah I think you are right. and there are some confused strains out there. like in terms of landraces, you know they adapted over hundreds of years to the environment there in. like the kushs like elevation can cope with higher hum, mossy European ones high hum , lower temperature. but the Afghani, the ones I like are more adapted to arid, hot environments. and like I say with the confused traits. like a tenth of Afghans optimum environment. we cross for flavour and effect, they just care about how well the seeds survive. I think the experiment would work if they were the landrace strains. they are more homogenous
i find better flavour that way too, anything turning purple just don't do it for me can taste the anthocyanins even if slightly, makes sense as they are flavonoids.

This was a part of bro science that I’ve been adhering to for years. I’m glad that there’s science to back it up now. I’ve tried to keep my temps around 80f during flower to prevent purple stems but when I did, I’d always end up with never ending new pistils forming. I’ve just recently, really dialed in my process to get consistent results. Thanks for all of the info over the years. Context is everything in cultivation.
Hi! Isn't it obvious to you that it's just mimicking nature...nothing new...except that in nature it start with mild temperature and days who get longer in April...I just guess it occurs naturally in countries where there is wild cannabis during those months March or April then temperatures start to increase in June when the plant is big enough to spread July is when you know how big it will end August is stretch month but half of it is flowering time and it's hot a bit less in September but hot October is cooler...same with light in April there's approximately 14h of sun 18h in June 16h in July 14h in August 12h in September 10h in October...using more light than needed is a concern especially those days...I guess it speed the process early in the grow but when you have 8 to 10 weeks to veg the next crop there's no point...I will keep mimicking nature and save money!

Indoor cultivation is attractive because we get to control the environment and have consistent high quality crops. Outside is often too hot, too cold, too windy, too wet, too dry. There’s so much bro science when comes to cannabis, it’s nice to know that something you do has real value.

I'm so relieved that I get to grow outside and use the power of the sun. By the time I'm harvesting it's nice and cool if not freezing temperatures. When the tomato plants die off, that's about when I harvest😅

I remember in a previous conversation you had with an expert from dr bruce bugbee lab saying it was the last 4 to 5 weeks to run lower temps and was still good to run higher temps in early flower to fill up the upper canopy 1st. Bit confused but love details you guys go into. I run c02 so was thinking running 29c during veg and the 1st 3 weeks of flower after the stretch and flowers formed then drop the temps.
with co2 the rules change and they handle stress from temps better
what we are trying to avoid indoor is temp differences they lower the yeild
and we dont want to bring them close to the stunning point like you are at 20c
with lots of co2 these rules will change
in fact it matters what the co2 levels was natural when this study was done, to get anything from this study
but no country that is around 20c grows the best weed natural

This makes sense when you think about the “natural” growing cycle (in the wild) of the plant in most countries. It starts off warm in spring, gets hot in summer (veg) then gets cooler in autumn (flower). And of course some countries have different climates and so the strains there would be different, which goes along with what you said.
I wonder, if you control your water temp in a DWC grow, what difference that would make also?
As for the heat collected by the buds due to lamp radiation, well LEDs are the best option there, but also have a higher wattage lamp, but spaced further away from the canopy. Although this uses more energy (costs more), it will have the effect of not burning the tops, and also allowing a more even light absorption over the colas/buds from the very top to the furthest at the bottom.
You will find much improvement in hydroponics with the ability to maintain your water at 65 degrees F
they have low temps every night in the nature..
that is one of the things we try to avoid to get max yield indoor
having it close to the stunning temps will reduce your yeld, and then it doesent matter if you have a few cannabinoids that are 1%stronger..
it can handle 40c without it hurts your quality, the real killer is temp differences....
its a known fact that keeping the temp night and day the same more or less gives bigger yeild
root temps are also not spoken about here
it is deffently not proven your yeld will get bigger if you bring the plants close to 20,c
that is the reason they dont grow natural in good quality where i live

Bruce has said in a We the Growers podcast to maintain rootzone temps the same. And that makes sense, as you increase temp you are losing your dissolved oxygen. Water temp should be at or below 25C. Running it at 18C like the other guy suggested can cause some issues sometimes when running air temps of 28+C. too big of a differential is a rootshock stressor

I run mine in my basement in a 2x4 tent and I run mine about 70-75 °F with the lights on and about 68 with the lights off. The smell and flavor is awesome
This is why my last indoor harvest is in (mid to late)May. After that its too hot and humid to justify all the AC and Dehumidification. Also I can focus on my outdoor grows.

Awesome news to hear as we are days away from the start of winter here and just pulled 4 and another 4 to go in 2 weeks.. good timing. Did a summer grow at those high temps, was hard work but still had success, but a lot of watering. Just started vegging some now

I'm a little surprised you only came too this conclusion now, I've been working with low temps during flowering for many years already. You can also increase your THC and Terpenes through proper cuing, I was able to increase the percentage of THC by as much as 2% with proper curing, industry lab tests demonstrated this result with every crop.

Interested to hear how this study will be affected by co2 injections, as far as my experience goes, having 1200-1500ppm in the flowering room will make plants to uptake more nutrients which equals water, they need to breathe and release it, warmer temperature helps with that …

I thought I would get a heat mat, but I messed with temps forever from 73 and down but my leaves were not straight up and praying and when I got the mat down to 68 the leaves were straight up by morning, wow Shane what the hell it works.
I have a 5’x5’ with Migro 600(sexiest set-up on earth) growing Sugar Black Rose a 50+ cup champion using Mantis Buffered Nutrients in 9”rock-wool slabs watered by hand and this one tip alone from Shane sure helped a pot of stress😅though there is one more problem, if anyone in the same predicament already figured it out would be brilliant, I’m in a wheelchair and have no way to put the zipper up the middle together so I have never closed my tent, ever and I am alone and don’t want the neighbours to know or get a new friend if you know what I mean. I would pay to have a solution but I am poor enough which means I would pay once, maybe take the doors off and put up alternative maybe no zippers just use magnets so what do you guys think? Thanks

indoor winter harvest are definitely my best due to the nice cool 60F inside. but, one of the best plants ive ever grown was mango isle F2 which had to fight consistent 94F+ temps inside the tent and had a potency ive never experienced before. the effects smoked from .2g last beyond 4 hours. i wonder if the high temp helped the plant to grow with more vigor. also wonder how potent that strain would be if it was grown in cool temps. great vid migro
I found my heat stressed plant also upped its trichome and resin production. Think it’s s from UV so she put on more “sun screen”. Stress in all its forms has been shown to produce tougher and therefore more potent plants.
Some strains come out much better when flowered in hot temperatures.

It's beautiful chart. We need one for the rhizosphere. Oxygen content vs temp vs nutes vs pH vs wetness vs microbes vs what day vs what time of day. These big hydro setups have a water chiller and they aerate their water with air that is not CO2 enriched because the pump is outside the sealed rooms where the CO2 is. These are things I've noticed but haven't studied yet. Good luck. I still want your lights but just can't get one yet. Im not giving up. Peace🦨

N-P-K-Mg-Ca (mg/L) If you google that .npk ratio you will surely find the source study behind it

You can run higher temps with LEDs, I run veg and flower at 84f getting explosive growth in both tents and tarps and stickiness

Was this done with all other factors the same? I thought I heard a few times it was. I was wondering if the humidity was raised with the temperature? Or was the humidity held at the same level while just the temps were increased for the study? If the RH was held constant, I think this would explain the lower quality. It would explain why the bud temps exceeded the air temp. Sounds like the vpd went really high in the high heat chambers as part of the experiment.
I found there is absolute validity in lowering the temps in flower to increase density and preserve the trichs from degrading. Heres the catch, I believe you can achieve fast growth rates, high yields with warm temps. The still drop temps in mid flower to preserve potency and density.
This study might show the driving force in growth rates is the plants temperature. That the air temp is a tool in increasing that. But without balancing the RH and not allowing bud temps to run out of control than quality will be sacrificed for growth.
good info thx mate. so, anybody an idea about how to cool down - or even better: how to keep the buds cool? i live in europe, if i keep running the AC half the day it costs me a few thousands at the end of the year :/
18-25 good in flower...but by harvest, drying, cure and storage this temp is ideal to maintain till smoked. But experinced growers already know.

if you dont haven an ac its impossible to hit those low temepratures during the summer:
and even with an ac its hard:
Most people exhaust the humid air out of the room so the heat from outside automatically enters your growroom:
if you dont exhaust the humid air out of the room you risk too humid environment:
only thing against that would be a dehumidifyer:
but that costs a lot of energy and also put out a lot of heat so its hard to get to low and dry growing condiitons during the summer.
thats why I prefer growing during winter times.
Hi, have you tried switching to lights on at night time? it will be a lot cooler running lights when the ambient temp is lower.

Imho you dont need any wind/ventilator whatsover and the passive airflow of the exhaust fan is enough for the plants:
I think strong winds around the buds just make the terps evaporate faster:

For the first 2 weeks of flower keep the veg at 28⁰ and 70% to get the best structure of the bolting. Then down to 25⁰ 60%, only go down to 22⁰ 50% at the last 2 weeks of flower

I’d be interested to know how co2 supplementation effects this. As in, if I’m running high par say 1300 and high co2 of the same 1300ppm, surely a low temp will not be helpful for faster metabolism of the plants being pushed harder. Or we saying now drop down to normal base levels co2 and 900 - 1050 par for late last 4 weeks flower?

I add co2 for the first 6 weeks -1200 ppm - 1300 ppfd, 84c
for the last 3 weeks I cut out co2, reduce and raise lights gradually to 800 ppfd in the final week with no co2 at all and 73c

Shit...here I was celebrating the use of less power for heat and I just realized now I will 'need' to buy that mini window air conditioner instead of just thinking about it. My emergency swamp cooler thing/creation that uses 5lb blocks of ice only drops the temp by -7 degrees. That only leaves a dehumidifier left to buy, and the CO2, and the etc.
try switching the light cycle to ight time for cooler grow room temps
The best potency for me is not allowing the trics to turn all amber.

Do you or any of your Irish subscribers have any recommendations for reasonably priced air conditioning units that can be purchased in Ireland/EU. I suppose by "reasonably priced" I mean between 200-300 Yo-yo's. Or any other ways to lower temperatures in a grow tent? Thanks for another valuable video Shane/Migro.
Where are you ducting out to? Outside? Is your tent in an attic? You should be able to control temps this time of year in Ireland without aircon.
Tried once with a comfee-coolingunit. Sold it again...energy is too expensive, loud, exhausting air was like 45 C. For drying was nice though
@@joebanks9529 Tent's in a spare bedroom and unfortunately, is vented into the same room. Yup...therein lies my problem but was trying to avoid cutting hole in ceiling of this rental property to vent into the attic. Venting outside is not an option. Guess I should start cutting :) Thanks for helping me face the music.
@@TheMisanthrope. No worries, you knew it anyway. Got the lighting set to be off at the hotter part of the day? Only other thing I could think of really. Or vent so its draw out an open window. Run the duct to the floor below the window, a well place fan to encorage it out. Aircon wont help unless its ducting out the room anyway.

I'wonder where the CO2 concentration were kept for this experiment? We know that high concentrations allow plants to thrive even at high temperatures. Doesn't that include terpene and cannabinoid production as well? My guess is that Dr. Bugby set CO2 concentrations very high, so he could focus on the effects of temperature only. But Temp and CO2 seem to work synergistically in a way this experiment might not take into account.
i would also love to see this started out at a higher temp..
something tells me this have more to do with temp stress then that exact temp
no matter what the natural co2 levels would matter most to start with
and then we could start to add co2, so the plant can handle temp strees better for example
but the baseline should be near the natural co2 limit for most growers, for this to be true.
we can see co2 levels does not play a role to this study, so it should be posible to add to any conditions

This is good news less power needed is a good thing for me growing in a garage with a 500w tent heater constantly cycling on and off. Think I'll get 420 compliant and celebrate.

These are leaf temperatures? With lights on or lights off?
In another video Bruce stated that you should aim to keep the same temperature for the plants during lights on and off , however it wouldn’t hurt for the temperature to drop 5degrees or so at night .
As for the THC and terpenes yes it is the actual heat that destroys them so if lights off the temperature goes up to 25-30 degrees it will destroy them regardless.
Iv had friends grow superb stuff only to speed up the drying with a small heater in the room set to 28 degrees and by the time it was dry it had zero smell to it all the terpenes were gone completely.

How oftern in the uk, ireland is it above 25c+ outside. Almost never.

@@MIGROLIGHT my flat is cool enough, that's not an issue. I have to run the dehumidifier in the tent, here the RH goes up to 80% if I don't run it on 100% all the time.

I'd say sorta but not really, outdoor growers have known this for years but it's newly backed by science with more precise or optimum ranges
Just like with uv lights 25+ yrs ago ppl used to say to but black lights in your flower room now you can buy uv lights just for that
The one thing that concerns me, is that Dr Bugbee is only allowed CBD plants for research. Nothing over 0.15% THC. There is a difference between the 2 when growing. Some of his research is great, but I find it’s too “science” and not meant for the typical old school grower who’s out for the full range of the plant, not just THC focused which so many people are today. I don’t care for “science” grown weed. I prefer most old school growing techniques that concentrate on the plants aromas and tastes and not THC value. Anything over 10% is going to get you high.
It's because the canabanoids are evaporating off at high temperatures that's why it stinks. If I go in my grow room and the temps are mid 70s I Smell nothing high temperatures it absolutely stinks.
