GROWING PAINS ALBUM: Björk’s “Vespertine” - First I thought her voice was too brash. It felt really raw and vulnerable and her punchy delivery didn’t make sense - then when this symphony sized choir came in on the chorus of “Hidden Place” I didn’t know what the hell to think or feel! Instead of a cozy electric guitar written with the singer leading me thru a track, there was this strange vibe - this all atop beds of crackles, pops, ticks and glitchy samples. Turns out I need a little Vespertine to widen my scope a bit. Now it’s a totally special album to me as it’s one of those pivots in musical discovery we all are lucky to have experienced thru the years. Thanks Josh for the reminder of my growing pains album :) !

Nick Drake-Pink Moon, a good friend of mine gave me the album to listen to for a few weeks and I guess at the time it was way too soft for me ( was going through one of those fazes )
anyway now he has become one of my favorite artists, calm, uplifting. depressing, thoughtful, spars and beautiful all on one album. In my mind it is a masterpiece and has been apart of my regular listening albums for well over ten years now.

One band that took 25 years to finally click for me was Fugazi. One of my good friends in high school loved them and I could never quite "get" them. Finally, within the last year, I re-watched Instrument and recently read the 33 1/3 book on the making of In On The Killtaker and now I'm obsessed with them.

I've bought and sold more than two dozen drive pedals trying them in my rig. I currently have 5 drive pedals on my board because they each have a unique character that warrants the real estate. One tip is that before you decide to list something, get a used looper pedal and place it in front of your drive and record several examples of how you normally play. Then you'll have your hands free to dial in every combination of knobs in a fraction of the time while your ears are deciding what the pedal is capable of. This is also a good strategy at soundcheck allowing you to adjust your pedal/amp eq for the gig.

Thank you so much for mentioning the great line-6 distortion modeller!
There is a personal story for me concerning this one :
Some years ago i had to built up my rig totally new but i had not much money,
When i had to decide, which overdrive/distortion/fuzz i should buy, there were so many great sounding boxes i had in mind but could not afford all of them.
By chance i saw an ad in a music magazin where someone sold a new stompbox by line 6, which claimed for itself it could digitally reproduce a lot of the most important and significantly sounding overdrives, distortions and fuzzes in rock history for an inexpensive price. I had heard about the green line-6 delay and that The Edge and Steve Hackett used it so I called him and asked him, why the price was so low and he told me, that he couldn' t find someone who wanted to buy it because everybody he offered it obviously had the position that classical guitar distortion sounds couldn't be reproduced in acceptabke quality.
Anyway, finally he accepted to sent me his dm-4 to try it out for a few days with the restricition to pay it only if i like it.
What shall i say, i got this metal yellow
thing finally for less them 120 € and it reliably reproduces all that legendary overdrives, fuzzes and distortions from TS-808 over Maestros and Big Muffs even to Boss Metal Zone. O.k. ...some of the classical tones are a bit nearer to the originals, some are caught not THAT similar but most of the sounds are very very close to the model. I had the chance to borrow some Originals, so i could test it one to one and i can truely confirm that the dm-4 sounds are real close to them.
The Line 6 DM-4 in my opinion is one of the most underrated stompboxes on the market, that's a shame and i can't understand it.
IT's a killer-sounding overdrive/fuzz/distortion-chameleon and i thank you, that you mentioned it in your video!!
PLEASE TELL THIS EVERYBODY WHO NEEDS A GOOD AND VERSATILE DISTORTION!!!!
Hope, my story was not boring,
    Greetings,
    Andy (from Germany)

Funeral - Arcade Fire, Blonde - Frank Ocean, Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Innerspeaker - Tame Impala, 808 and Heartbreak - Kanye West, Mezmerize - System of a Down. All of these albums I thought were really bad when I first heard them but now are some of my favourites. I think sometimes if it takes a while to get into an album its usually because there is something that you are not used to in the sound and when you 'get it' it really resonates.

Album that grew on me : "The Getaway" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Needs multiple listening. Now I'm a fan of the band and know all of their album pretty well, even the first ones. But...when I heard it for the first time I wasn't convinced at all. Third time I heard it was on a beautiful summer day and suddenly it all made sense. The sound is fairly different (produced by Danger Mouse instead of Rick Rubin) but more natural...less compressed. It felt like I could hear Chad's drums real sound for the first time without everything being in your face. 3 key tracks : "Death of a Samurai", "The Getaway" (which should've been a single) and "Goodbye Angel". Now we all love Frusciante and we're excited he's back but Josh Klinghoffer is a f*cking good musician and has some great guitaristic moments on "The Getaway".

Another great video, vato! I think it’s so cool that you, as a builder who can build all these pedals himself, still promotes them and talks about how great they are. Thanks for reminding us that at the end of the day while we are trying to navigate through all of the tone snobbery and gear pretentiousness, it’s just about what sounds good and feels good to you. Whatever makes you pick up the guitar and create. Thanks josh.

I don't use overdrive, fuzz distortion
But I do own a Boss OS-2 that works well and can be found for $30 used all over the internet in new condition.
The OS-2 is one of the pedals that are used to shame users, by players that paid $200 to $400 for an overdrive, when it is actually a great pedal at a bargain price. $99 new with 4 knobs to control the sound you desire. "Level, Tone, Drive and Color."

I love In Rainbows, but Its not my favorite because Johnny touches less guitar in it and I just LOVE his style. 15 steps is another one I've learned, it's actually one of my favorite albums of all time, it's artistic, poignant, Dreamy. Their use of Tape echo and volume pedals, just those 2 things, make it sooooo sweet. But when I was a teenager I was dumb and was only into mediocre classic rock and popular metal.

OD-3 has always been my go-to pedal. Great as a gain booster as well. You can easily get a very natural, tube-like dirt out of it. Definitely on par with so-called “boutique” drive pedals.

Josh I love these vlogs! It’s great to hear stories behind the product and it makes you think of different options on the market that you wouldn’t normally go to.
And album that changed a lot for me and certainly had to grow up to was Downward Spiral from Nine Inch Nails.

Nirvana Nevermind- I was a big fan of 80s hard rock and the first Nirvana album came out when I was a freshman in college. I hated the grunge sound, and at the time, I perceived the musicianship to be very weak in comparison to the virtuosic 80s musicians. I also blamed them for sidelining the type of music I loved. Looking back however, I realize that it was great music and it takes me back to my college years.

Melvins Bullhead was an album, or a band, that I could not understand at first listen. It took literally a year for me to get into it, and appreciate it. Now, I love the band to death. Ween is another band that is like that as well, and Chocolate and Cheese was the album that introduced me to them.

Awesome to see a pedal maker talk passionately about other pedals in the market. I own one of your soul food mods & also that boss od3 you flashed at the beginning, good to know my ear isn't that off with what tones I use. There's a special place in my heart for multi fx pedals, might have to give that line 6 a go too!

I was pretty surprised to not see the Danelectro CoolCat Drive on this list. Awesome drive pedal. Even if the tone knob goes from dark to bright really fast.

    • @licosaenz
      @licosaenz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Samuel Emmett yeah Cool Cat really stacks up against most pedals, including much more expensive ones. I have not been able to kill my Danelectro Pastrami mini pedal in over 10 years. It’s a trashy shallow tone, but it’s the best trashy, shallow toned overdrive. I like it to punch up any solos.

Just found your channel and vlog. Really enjoying it-when Record Time rolls around, I get excited to think about what’s in my collection and what I haven’t listened to in a while.
Freddy Johnston’s “Can You Fly” (c. 1992) is a remarkably good album that I took my sweet time getting to know and love. Not sure why I bothered giving it so many listens-I really didn’t like it for months. Not until the album showed up on some road trip cassettes did I get it. Now, I LoVe this record!
I don’t mind being a cement-headed idiot when it comes to good music. . . as long as I come around in the end.
    Thanks for your posts!

The Mr Black JDS 50 is truly special. I have and use 22 OD's live! This is a killer for tight busy chord work. It keeps your sound totally in control full and rich and never muddy or fizzy!!!
