Mama Cass, the lady saying "wow" at the end was part of the (at the time) super group, The Mamas & The Papas. The Monterey Pop Festival was one of the first big outdoor Rock Concerts. Check out Eric Burdon & The Animals' hit "Monterey" in which he names the big acts who played that day.

The Mamas and the Papas were the headliners and closing act but are largely forgotten at Monterey because of the performances of Joplin , Hendrix, the Who and Otis Redding

Considering everything that had come before her, this must have been such a wonderful shock to the audience, who'd have heard nothing like her before this. Like Mama Cass herself, that was more what people knew from female singers. The 60's were the start of that open, anything is allowed in art, era. And she epitomized that.

You've got to understand NOBODY had heard Janis before the Monterey Pop Festival...the one you're watching. She blew the roof off the place (well it was actually outside, but you get it). Cass Elliot was the woman they kept showing. Cass was one of the Mamas and the Papas band. THEY were responsible for this, the first rock festival. They called in a lot of favors to make it happen. Imagine how it must have been for Janis. She was frightened little girl when she walk on stage, she left a famous woman. I saw Janis often, living in the Bay Area.

Cass Elliot was probably THE premier female vocalist at the time of this festival. You see her is the crowd, mouth agape and simply astonished. The crown passed hands. You just watched Janis Joplin becoming the new benchmark, and Cass Elliot handing over the crown. An absolutely stunning performance. There are some that say there is no such thing as a soul, and others say that, like a belief in a God, that it exists, you can't see it or touch it, but it is there. If anyone you know questions the existence of a soul, show them a video of Janis performing.

In interviews, Janis Joplin said her inspiration was the great African American Blues singers if the 1920s & 30s. I believe this song was originally sung by Mama Thorton...I could be wrong. Most white people ( like me) had never heard those earlier blues artist because white radio stations would not play their records.Janis was a middle class girl from Texas. Her choice of music and style of singing was condemned in some circles because of the black origins. It infuriates me that she allowed heroin into her life. Oh the music she would have given the world.

A little context. This was the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. It was the first ever outdoor Multi Day - Multi Talent weekend music festival. It was co-organized by The Mamas and The Papas of which Mama Cass Elliot is the one watching in awe saying Wow. The festival was suppose to be in LA where they're from but was not able to secure a venue so they were offered the Monterey Fairgrounds Arena up north just south of San Francisco, and mostly because most of the talent of the time were based in SF.
Janis was an unheard of artist from Texas and at the time living up in the San Francisco music scene cutting the rug in the bay area clubs. It was suggested for her to debut at the Pop Festival so this was the first anyone outside of the bay ever saw or heard of her.
A young Columbia Records scout by the name of Clive Davis was sitting next to Mama Cass and after being blown away by Janis was immediately inspired to give her her first record contract. The rest became History.
Other artist performing there was Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Canned Heat, Steve Miller Band, The Animals, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Grateful Dead, Country Joe and The Fish, Simon and Garfunkel, Otis Redding The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Lou Rawls, Ravi Shankar, The Mamas and The Papas, and many more.

This was the 2nd performance by Big Brother & the Holding Company at the Monterey Pop Festival to allow it to be filmed as the San Fransisco bands had initially refused permission to film.

The big woman in the crowd with the big sunglasses was Mama Cass Elliott, another incredible singer from the Mamas and the Papas.

You just watched what was my very first live music performance. I was 13 and an older cousin was forced to drag me along. A lot of firsts for me that weekend!
