- Since 1965 there have only been 18 men with the incredible distinction of being crowned Mr. Olympia. With every Mr. Olympia having qualities that separate them from the rest the 18th Mr. Olympia Derek Lunsford is especially unique.
Born on May 14th 1993 in Petersburg Indiana, Derek grew up with a strong athletic foundation. Having been a wrestler for years, he had to move on from the sport when his college didn't offer it. Needing that competitive itch to be scratched, Derek pivoted to bodybuilding and committed his life to it from that point on.
Whether it be his rapid ascent to dominating open bodybuilding, or 2 titles in two different divisions, Derek Lunsford has carved out a special place for himself in the history of bodybuilding, all while setting himself up to become the IFBB's next generationally dominant Olympia champion.
Whether or not he lives up to that hype will reveal itself in time. However to best understand how he reached the pinnacle of bodybuilding it's important to go back to the beginning.

To be fair, as a Hadi hater and a Derek lover, I think Hadi really brought it back into standard and I think Derek has continued to build on that foundation
I have soo much respect for Derek. He is TRULY a humble giant who puts God and family first. One of the kindest people you’ll ever meet who just happens to be an amazing bodybuilder. He’s a amazing ambassador for the sport!

imo one of the biggest factors is derek's size... if the judges insist on staying ON THE LINE then he will have a hard time matching up in size to a lot of the other guys. without scale, derek's physique is perfect proportionally tho.. one of the best we've seen

Olympia made derek win for its business purpose
I think he is a great ambassador for the sport, but I also think his back beat Hadi in 2023 as pretty much all Mr. Olympia’s win the back. Derek is still improving, but Hadi can only come in conditioned because he’s peaked in his ability to grow.

Real question, why is tiny belly considered better then a full muscled belly? Full belly looks nicer to me and seems stronger too... I know nothing about bodybuilding so Ive always wondered.... I know it isnt about strength but it is about muscle so from my know nothing point of view the full belly seems better
It's more aesthetic. It doesn't have anything to do with looking strong but everything to do with making your shoulders look as wide as possible

I guess we'll have to see them stacked next to each other but I wouldn't be mad with either one being Mr.O I just think his structure is gonna hurt him against Derek becuase he has that cartoon look to his back. Nick Walker has small squatty pecs. He looks stupid. His Abbs are almost as big as his pecs. He has taken too much GH. He looked a 1000 times better when he was on just the roids. In his earlier days.

So unless something really weird happened to wrestling in my original home state….Props to him though. I have respect for anyone who walks on stage and trains with the will to also diet and come in condition.
People mentioning heath when it comes to these guys kinda makes me feel sick, I’m a fan of body building but it needs to be dialled back, the open reminds me of the people breeding these disabled American bully dogs for “the look” and in the pursuit lowering a dogs lifespan from 14 years to 7. Being 5”6 in the open way north of 200lbs is straight up stupid and a far cry from the days of Arnold.

Definitely. Hadi is too late into his career. He looked incredible at the Arnold but Derek has so many years ahead of him he could easily make a 5 year reign

No he is too short. Heath is the shortest you can be to rule for more than 3 years. At 5 9". When people say Mr Olympia and you look at someone 5 6". Doesn't look right.

Since I was a kid in the 80s I always k ew who Mr Olympia was... I didn't even know who this guy was. It's gotten so put of hand. All these Mr Olympia contenders suck and look like crap. It's not bodybuilding anymore its muscle building.... classic is pretty good though.
