I have a late-generation in .270 and it’s my deer rifle of choice. The late-generation ‘95s are manufactured in Japan and, as you can see in the video, the workmanship is excellent.
Beautiful rifle and and ground breaking round so many years ago. I know your buddy North61 used a .405 to kill a caribou at several hundred yards once. He appeared surprised at how flat shooting the big 300 grainer shot. I would love to have the .405 Win as well as the .348 Win in the same platform. I can always dream!
While the Winchester 1895 in .405 winchester is definitely super cool, "flat shooting" is not the word that comes to mind when thinking about it! With the Hornady 300 grain Interlock at the typical 2200 fps we are talking a point blank range (where the bullet does not rise or fall more than 4 inches from the line of sight) of 230 yards. Thats about the same as a .30-30. You certainly can shoot long distance with it, but you better practice a lot, has a rangefinder and a dope chart.
‘95 Winchester has always been my favorite lever gun! Just a beautiful piece of machinery. My absolute dream gun would be a ‘95 in 30-06 converted to a .35 Whelen! Thanks for posting another excellent video!
MrPrimitiveman Ballistic twin of a 35 Winchester ha? Just my best guess. With the popularity of the 338 bullet and the resurgence of the 46/70 why has no one put the 2 together, the shoulder taper would be likened to a 348 Winchester ACkly improved with slightly less capacity and a slightly smaller diameter bullet . Still one could utilized the abundance of the 338 caliber bullets it seems like a no brainer to me . Should provide similar performance possibly even bettor performance . A lot better bullet selection. Cheaper cases.
Such a beautiful gun with such a colorful history. Theodore Roosevelt swore by his lever action Winchester specifically in this caliber during his famous African Safari and for good reason. It truly has withstood the test of time. Thanks for the video and keep on shootin'!
I have an original '95 and also a Ruger No. 1 in .405 Winchester. Both are fun guns to shoot. The '95 was also chambered in .30-03, the predecessor to the .30-06 and the parent cartridge of the .270 Winchester. My favorite load for the .405 without question using the Hornady 300-grain pills, is IMR 4320 at 57.0 to 58.0 grains- it is amazingly consistent.
Gorgeous rifle Sir. I love the hard casing finish on it. Wow you're going to need an umbrella shooting all those water jugs. Thanks for showing this Cool Winchester.
Excellent as always! Thank you Big Bore! My Buddy and I used to call each other Big Bore 94 at work, after the .375 came out. Now I own a Big Bore 94 in .356 Win.

I almost spent a LOT of money at an auction because of an old custom rifle. It was an 1898 Danish Krag, sporterized when new, fully engraved, and in 405 Winchester. I didn't stop bidding until it went north of $4000 and it sold for $6500. Man, you should have seen it, prettiest rifle in the world.
Frithjof Nansen had a Danish Krag in .45-90 made by Erik Jørgensen on the Kongsberg arsenal of Danish action parts. Full stocked rifle. Sadly stolen in the 1990s ,not recovered .
Roosevelt did not call it his 'big medicine gun' ! That's a misquote by several 'authors' who probably mixed up his 'big-stick-foreign-policy' and his 'medicine gun' quote. Roosevelt wrote in fact in his series _'African game trails : an account of the African wanderings of an American hunter-naturalist'_ , published in Scribner's Magazine, vol. XLVI-XLVIII, from Oct. 1909 to Sept. 1910: _'The Winchester .405 is, at least for me personally, the _*_medicine gun_*_ for lions.'_ There you go. Always check quotes before you re-quote them. Most quotes that circulate on the internet were either never said that way or not by the person to whom they are attributed, so rather come from ignoramuses.
I’m not sure if I said it in this video but I have said is very controversial whether he said it was for a big cats big medicine and there’s no proof that he actually said it, I have most of teddy Roosevelt’s African game books, The only way to know if a quoteis rightis if you heard it yourself. Because words can be printed different than you quoted in any book including your own, basically if you think about it everything that we know or thought we know in the modern age is a lie, everything is being manipulated votes are being counted medicines being forced lies are being told
Was just looking into this cartridge this evening. Goodness gracious the components are hard to get, especially brass. Buffalo Arms charges $3 per cartridge (if available). Pretty much no one else on earth makes brass for it, except the limited run Hornady did at one time. Evidently A-Square made cases at one point, but that company dissolved in 2012. Was wondering of there's a modern equivalent in a closeby caliber that delivers similar performance, which is more commonly available. I know the old .40-82 WCF was a thing at one time, but it was shorter and much less powerful.
Great gun, but awkward to carry with that box magazine. A friend had one it 30/03 not 30/06 similar, but slightly different. It was a take down with a $400 peep sight. Deadly accurate, we were blowing up milk jugs at 300 yards. We went elk hunting years ago together. We got back to the truck after not seeing any. He leaned the rifle on the back bumper as we had lunch.........drove off and left it laying in the road! That was Saturday. We were going to go hunting Sunday but didn't. Monday he went to take it out of the truck before work and discovered it missing. Went back to look for it, but it was gone. He ran a radio ad for two weeks offering a reward (the gun was worth about $3,000 in the condition it was in, and being a take down)........never seen it again. I've never got him to go hunting again either. Hard to replace something like that!
Muskrat Outdoors i’m going to stop leaning my gun against the back of my jeep well I don’t have a jeep but I’m not going to start lol, that’s terrible I hate to hear that, had a friend that lean his shot gun up against his Jeep and drove over it and bent the barrel and broke up the stock on a brand new Browning, That is a very interesting story thanks for sharing it, yeah seems like it could be awkward to carry, but I bet it would be a blast to shoot something with, if I’m not mistaken 30/03 infringed on the Patton so the US government had to change and so they had to wait until the patent expired and they come out with a 30-06
@@Leverguns50 It is still a sore subject with him. It was his favorite rifle and to loose it so stupidly was a terrible thing. Maybe the only difference is in the name? If I ever win the lottery, I'll buy him another! We have been best friends 35 years now at least......I wish I could get him to go hunting again.......
Yeah I looked it up I guess I was wrong it has to do with the bullet being 220 grain round nose for 30-03 and the case might’ve been slightly longer anyhow the 30-06 used a 150 grain bullets of the spitzer design, You sound like the kind of guy everybody wants for a friend, hopefully he’ll come to his senses and come back hunting with you again
@@Leverguns50 Thanks! Actually, I've been pricing those guns for years. If I recall, he lost that rifle around 1999. For hillbillies like us, loosing a gun is worse than loosing a family member.
Now I regret giving away my .30-40 brass when I sold my Krag 1898 because I didn't know that the 1895 Winchester was originally chambered for that cartridge. I may want one of these one day if I branch out from black powder.

405 Winchester is a nice round. I like it quite a bit. My friend has one. His is a single shot though. He uses it for black bear in Pennsylvania. Our black bears are pretty darn big here.
You can find lots of videos on the 1895 in 405 Winchester, but you can't find anyone hunting with one. You need to take this beautiful rifle out and make a hunting video with it!! 😁
That is a beautiful beast!! I love cch, I have a number of guns with it. Since Hornady makes a bullet for it, does anyone still make them like the Italians? Fantastic video my friend, I want to come play at your house!! Rich
I'm really surprised this caliber isn't more common, 300gr .405 bullet travelling 2225 fps should be able to take anything down except the largest dangerous African game (and it should do that with the right bullet), seems entirely appropriate for grizzly but I never hear of hunters using it:( I see on a forum that one guy took a RHINO with a 405-all I need to know:) This gun can kill ANYTHING on the planet, within its range
Yeah, but how many hunts do you expect to do on big game? And its really not any more expensive than other 40+ magnum calibers that most people use-if you reload even better (which you have to do to exploit this cartridge, as there is only about 3-4 commercial loads available that i know of)
@faultroy Loved your post and totally "get" it, I have also learned how important other species are, I hunt only limited species, and take them with a clean kill, I won't take long shots and "target practice" on living creatures; If I had my way the only meat a person could eat is what he hunts himself, give the creature time to live in a natural setting before killing them, etc. That's a great point on reloading, they make a 400 and 405 bullet/mold for the .405 and you can load this down for deer and easier recoil-excellent point. Never could understand people who used guides unless it was for dangerous game or in a foreign country-that's the whole point, becoming your own guide

When you fired your rifle it sure did make your Chooks cackle. Beautiful rifle except for the box magazine, it fair dinkum detracts from the look of a lever action. But still a bloody nice rifle.
I’ve read it can be loaded up quite a bit harder especially with the 400 grain bullet, but the 50-110 it’s still quite a bit more powerful basically the 405 top loads are a little less than the 45-90s top loads
When I saw this gun, I too "wet my pants"! But could you please pop off some of dem LOUD chickees & woosters for the dinner table??? Many years ago I used to shoot into Red & White Oak stumps for penetration & knockdown power. 45/70's would penetration a lot BUT my big .58 Minnies & round balls had superior KNOCKDOWN power in abundance! The Oaks were like "granite" too!! How I greatly enjoyed those days of "big thumpers" (I'm 79 now). Even a .22lr has too much recoil now (yust kiddin' of course). Love you guys!!! "Gesundheit"!
I'd love to have one but in the 7.62x54R Russian im going to be called a commie for that but in spitzer bullets thats my favorite and that lever gun is made to shoot pointy ammo 😁

Big medicine, indeed.
Is this gun used by Kenneth Anderson?
Yes it is
hi new friend, great channel, full support
Thank you
11:08 "lets see what else we can shoot with it". I immediately yelled THAT DAMN ROOSTER
Thanks for coming by and watching, sorry about the rooster 🐓
what's the recoil like? i'm used to .30-06
I think it has maybe 9 foot pound more recoil probably less with the newer powders, according to Winchester they said it had 28 foot pound
@@Leverguns50 thanks!
Beautiful!
Thank you
What a nice rifle :)
Good to hear from you, Thank you
Also good home defense gun, have ear muffs close by.
Good James 👍😂
When you fired your rifle it sure did make your Chooks cackle. Beautiful rifle except for the box magazine, it fair dinkum detracts from the look of a lever action. But still a bloody nice rifle.
Thank you
Would you work your magic and do a video pushing 400grns to over 2100, please?
I certainly would word I find that Bullet ?
Awesome video great gun
Thank you
Very nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Pls help, where do i find ammo ...
I can't find shit
Google search SGAmmo they say they have 14 boxes of it
2:08 What is that thing behind the hammer?
There’s a guy eight comments down that was talking about the same thing, lol
Always wanted one
+ralph crosby Me too, they’re bringing them back out again this year, in 30-06 and 405 Winchester
I watch to hear crabby roosters , lol. Fun as can be with a gun.
Hello my frend.thats cool.
Thank you
Shit it is powerful !
Kenneth Anderson also used the same gun
That’s interesting, thank you
Whats more powerful. This or 50 110
I’ve read it can be loaded up quite a bit harder especially with the 400 grain bullet, but the 50-110 it’s still quite a bit more powerful basically the 405 top loads are a little less than the 45-90s top loads
Buetiful rifle it just needs the Tang safety and rebounding hammer and thing else extra taken out out to make it original again
👌
Hank William's Jr. Has one
That’s really interesting
From north New York?
I hope I never catch a .405 in my pants.
Wow several pairs of pants to 12 pair wow.
Thank you
I'd love to have one but in the 7.62x54R Russian im going to be called a commie for that but in spitzer bullets thats my favorite and that lever gun is made to shoot pointy ammo 😁
Nothing wrong with a 762 x 54r!! It's a great round!! Isn't another word for commie a demacrap!! ( Lol ) Rich
@@donnadonna9907 ROFLMAO
I wish they would do a reproduction of the russian wwi ones.

Fuckin bayonet
