Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced that June 25, the day the Emergency was imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, would henceforth be observed as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' (Constitution murder day).
In a post on X, Amit Shah said the day would commemorate the massive contributions of all those who endured the "inhuman pains of the 1975 Emergency".
"On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced. The Government of India has decided to observe the 25th of June every year as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'," Shah tweeted.

The emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi ji was declared and imposed through gazette notification, and it was lifted later, but the emergency imposed today is an undeclared emergency and every citizen of the country is sad and troubled by it. So it is for an indefinite period, which will never end.

My parents were serving the state government during the emergency and they still remember it as the best time of their service life. Everything was going on smoothly. Why are people cribbing now? The worst thing now is the fear and hatred spread by the present regime.
BJP Should stop using and announcing Phrases like SHD. Instead they should buildup good will and relationships with opposition parties in the common interest of the nation. They should also yield to the opposition demands and have decent discussions in the parliament. It is responsibility of the ruling party to avoid any confrontations and stop using adjectives.

Nobody is interested in the past beyond a point. Observing a negative event every year is not to bring electoral dividends. People don't vote on past achievements or vote against because of past transgressions. BJP should have realised this after the no show in UP elections conducted immediately after the consecration of the Ayodhya temple. People vote on the basis of what is happening today. Emergency was indeed a black chapter in the history of Indian democracy, but the most of the voters born after emergency won't relate to it emotionally. Public memory is short. BJP should focus on the present.
The children need to be taught about our freedom struggle, the emergency which was a blot on our democracy, as also the fact that our constitution was bandied about by the LOP as though his party only represents democracy..... The congress brand of politics has been completely exposed

@josephjames859 Nobody is denying that. There is a continuum by the present govt. So why can't you see the present govt's achievements as well. The corona crisis was handled very well , digitalization has taken off, there has been huge infra building, and the economy is doing well inspite of the congress narrative. More reforms are needed, and one hopes that also happens... in Education, Health.... etc etc
