    I can remember as a kid assembling these locks from kits available for the Ford dealer, the 90s were rife with car crime here in the UK and one of the most targeted were fords as all you really needed to do was put a screw driver into the lock and wrench the lock around, whilst my dad would be getting the door back into shape I'd be making the lock up to the existing key, from what I remember there were only 4 cuts of disc and was doing them that often I could just look at the key and know what number was needed. Think our best one was 10 minutes from the customer arriving to getting paid and them leaving.

    • @rentaspoon219
      @rentaspoon219 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there was 4 degrees, 1 being a flat no cut and 4 being a full cut, 2 and 3 obviously just in between.
      You can read a key quite easily. The screw driver mistake was fixed by for quite easily because they realised the entire lock was turnable.
      You'd think they would've learnt but the new transits a few years back with the new key style had a lock that stuck out so you could just use mole grips to turn the entire lock.

    The coolest thing about this lock picking tool is that not a lot of people would immediately recognize it as a lock picking tool.
    Traditional flat lock picks? Wave rakes? Dimple rakes? Those all look like obvious lock picks.

      No false gates in the aftermarket one.

    • @sharpfang
      @sharpfang 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@nibs7252 That wouldn't be enough - you can still turn the disk past the gate and end at the stop. Feels to me, like instead of 2-step production of the disks. Normally - first create generic "blank" disks - without gates, but notches for stops and the keyhole (and optionally false gates), then assemble the stack of them on the key and cut the straight line of true gates to match this specific key. Here - the blanks are just plain featureless "washers" just with the keyhole, then placed on the key to have both the stops and the gates cut in one go. As result they all act like zero-cut.

    • @gtbarsi1103
      @gtbarsi1103 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sharpfang The production isn't even that complicated. The disks are mass produced, with different "stoops" for bitting just like the different size pins in pin tumbler locks. Then they pick a combination of them stack them in the lock with spacers between each and you are done. Some manufacturers don't bother with false gates when they make their key disks. That's it. It boils down to them not bothering and the tolerances they choose to manage to.

    • @sharpfang
      @sharpfang 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gtbarsi1103 If you're creating a couple hundred thousand locks of the same type (like a car manufacturer), sure. If you're making a run of a couple hundred to a couple thousand knock-offs - of a custom lock with keyway and disk shape only found in this model, like here - you won't obtain the bulk-produced original disks, you must make your own - and you start cutting corners.

    Nice to see A very familiar looking lock, I’ve built hundreds of these locks to key numbers over the years as part of my job in the uk motor industry..
    the keys are also dead easy to read off to obtain the key number of the vehicle provided it’s not too worn out.
    The later design locks are also just as easy to assemble to key and disassemble to decode to obtain the key number..

    As soon as i saw it i hoped you'd mention the jag version with 8 disc's,
    These locks were comical, the flex in the door panels was enough to move the whole lock and pull the bar and unlock or lock the vehicle with zero damage,
    Plus i got a worn tibbe key that with a little shake and rake opens most tibbe locks,
    I recall noticeing these locks on fords made in the uk from around 1990,
    Prior to that they used what i call a IO lock as it had a circular core with splines sticking out at the top and on the opposite side of the core,
    Would love to see you pick one of those,
    The normal attack for those was a flat head screwdriver, when they started using tibbe the tool of choice was a Philips screwdriver
    Before judging me i use all the bad i learnt to help people, done some things but at least now i can explain and help people avoid being a victim

    Ford Tibbe lock.
    Pros: Really easy to read the code of the lock even with bare eyes and order new key from online even if old one was lock. Easy to decode with Tibbe lockpick. Cheap.
    Cons: Easily picked open or forced open. When the keys and the lock wear out, it gets more harder to open even with real keys (and when making new keys, you cannot tell the difference between cuts anymore)
    Used in most of Ford vehicles from ~80s to ~2006. That aftermarket lock might have been manufactured in Turkey or in China, the good thing that whole set costs usually less than ~30-40 euros for most of the cars, bad thing is that as the aftermarket keys are not chipped, you will have to move the chip if possible or MacGyver your way with the immobilizer chip to override it or place it next to the reader permanently. Or make new keys with the chip installed for the new lock set. As for the "all Fords are stolen in 20 seconds" - jokes, proper immobilizers where introduced around 1994, so electrical knowledge how to bypass immobilizer was also required.
    Anyway, that tool is excellent and brilliant piece of engineering.

There is a coil that surrounds the cylinder that energizes a tiny microchip in the key body and reads a code from it. the computer won't let the car start if it is not given the correct key. Further the immobilizer will lock down the computer until the proper code is read from a key it has been programed to, so the engine will not run. This is 20+year old tech and has been standard on ford products since the late 90's.

    One of the reasons Ford phased them out is because the keys actually need to be replaced every few years, when the plating on the key wears through it causes wear on the lock and you end up where you are stranded regardless of which key you use. This happened with our first Ford and of course we were miles from home and it cost us a fortune.
    New ignition lock and keys and a mobile locksmith is expensive, according to him the Ford dealers were supposed to notify purchasers to replace keys every couple of years.
    Of course the Tibbe was a step up from the previous keys locks that you could jiggle open with a coin (yes you didn't even have to insert anything to bounce the wafers around once the lock was about 18 months old.)
    At least the Tibbe was required for the immobiliser to function from the mid 90s (in the UK anyway)
    Coincidentally the locking mechanisms on the UK nuclear warheads in the 70s were apparently secured with same wafer locks as Ford used.

    When those locks came in over here in the UK it was because the prior locks Ford used were so dire a spam can key could open and operate just about anything and the new MK3 Escort was a major target for car thieves hence why they brought these in. Of course it didn't stop entry one bit as Ford used an archaic form of central locking that if you cut a tennis ball in half, slapped it over the lock hole and whapped it, the puff of air triggered the central locking. Ignition locks were a doddle too, cheap 50p "hammer thru" flat bladed screwdrivers and a small club hammer were the car thieves tool of choice, just hammered in the screwdriver and away you went.
