I'm a commercial driller all week working all over this great nation and a cable tooler on weekends with my son so can relate to many things you talk about and I would say you do a good job on the rig and explaining some of the challenges we deal with. Nicely done but I will say after 12 years I've seen enough stuff fall from heights that I'm surprised no hard hats? Many people don't think it's necessary and will fight it but after being forced for so long now it's habit and on the weekends we still comply, just a thought or concern but still have enjoyed your content on many of the topics you cover great job
I don’t think a hard hat will help against a 400 pound drill rod. Your done, anyway you look at it. Your right though about the need for a hard hat.
Agreed. Safety glasses? Steel toed boots?
@@tomsommer54 Yeah but a 1/2 pound bolt or rock something like that is what a hard hat is designed to save you from as well. Also a drill rod coming into contact with the side of your head may knock you over wearing a hard hat but without the hat may stove the side of your head in.
@@nspro931 I think we used hard hats once when there was a city inspector on site one day ... but otherwise they just get in the way , and wouldn't save you if things went south.
And that was even on a 10" , 10 ft sections line shaft turbon 700ish foot deep .
What screwed me up the first time ... was after we did a 6 inch , then the first time I did an 8 inch . I thought no big deal moving the elevators sideways on a truck bed .
But that motion messed my back up , cuz the 8 inch elevator was that much heavier than a 6 inch. An elevator is a 2 piece hunk of metal that clamps around the pipe just below the pipe coupling that is at the top side of every stick. Which are usually 21 ft ... but once in awhile they are only 10ft like the line shaft turbine which had an epoxy coating on the inside. But not only does it have 1 1/4 inch solid steel drive shaft in the center ... but every 10ft joint had a spanner to hold the shaft in the middle. That was a lot of fun putting together ... all done without hard hats.
Your fingers are what to worry about . But everything is safe when you do each stick the same ... never get out of rythem .
@@tomsommer54 It'll give you a much better chance than not having one.
This video is a gem! The whole process on film, narration... top job and a pleasure to watch.
Very cool. An industry I would have loved to enter, so really great to hear your words. Thanks. :)
I worked in maintenance at 3m for 31 years I like your channel and how interesting you make this .I wanted to work with a well driller in my younger years but went another path I do like your work and you show your craft well
Imagine driving that top heavy drill rig over the trees along with a water buggy . That really is nerve racking . Watching you change pipe . Nothing is better than training a new driller & that guy leaving his water pump engaged . It dont take him long to remember he has to turn that thing off after him being soaked .
I wish I knew everything there is to know about my well.
Love your ability to explain what's taking place in your line of work. You're very impressive as the young man (to me) you are!
Very nicely done, sir! I've had 4 wells drilled for homes I've owned over the years so I am familiar with the process - and I can say that your video makes it clear for someone who may NOT be familiar with what's involved. I wasn't aware, though, that driving the drilling rig was such and adventure. I figured it was just a big, slow-moving creature. The fact that it is so top-heavy hadn't occurred to me.
Pump selection for various wells and uses would be a good topic for a video (horsepower with respect to well depth and production, pipe diameter, etc.). I think I've seen some of your videos discuss that a bit - but a refresher video might be valuable for folks, since many people aren't likely to search too deeply into the archive to find the info.
Take care and God Bless.
I wish the people that did my well years ago would have put one of them tags on my well
You do beautiful work!
That was a fantastic video. Thank you for sharing this information.
We grew up tasting the best water, not spring water, but "fossil" water. In 1958, my Dad drilled down to 297' got through the sulfur water that everyone else was plagued with, and struck good water. He used 6" casing to seal the well against the sulphur water, and stopped when the water didn't smell anymore and gushed out the borehole clean and clear (so he said). Anyway, I know that well lasted until 2010 without any work on it at all when the only home we ever knew was sold to a guy that made it into a sandwich shop. But even then, the water tested "excellent" (and 10 gallon/minute) by the State of New York, County of Ontario. There is no doubt in my mind that we were extremely lucky to get water of that grade, and were able to keep it over many years. Thanks for your videos, it helped me understand what my Dad did for us.
Quite fascinating; stay safe young man. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I hope to lean a lot from your channel. ty FL
Its good you working with your father and getting all that training safety comes first 22:13
been there, done that! good job
Thanks for this vid! Reminds me of my younger days going to work with my Grandpa & Uncle drilling wells 😊
Just had a well drilled behind our house for irrigation... I watched the work being done!!! My hats off to you guys!!
Good job. I learn a lot from you.
Thanks for showing us how this is done
I love this video!
Hi. In Romania we put casing all the way to the bottom of the well. In my case i have a 360ft deep well with 360ft of casing out of which we have like 45ft of filter casing. At the bottom of the casing we screw a cap that looks like a cone. Around the filters we put very small gravel that filters out all the sand. This way we pump out sand-free water. Maybe in the US you have very rocky ground so you don't need to do this because the walls of the well will not collapse. It's curious that we build wells so differently
Your wells are gravel packed, there are certain regions in the US that require that type of well construction too. It varies from place to place
In North East Texas it is this way. Gravel packed that is. I built a homemade rig and drilled the well with the casing and left the bit on bottom.
I just had a new well drilled. 160 feet of 6 inch steel casing, and they placed a stainless steel screen about 5ft below that. There was a couple of feet of clay about 60 feet down, but the rest was all sand. The sand below the clay was beautiful white quartz. Such a relief to have good water after my well went dry for a few weeks last year!
I understand a few miles north they usually hit hot, rusty water. A few miles west they often drill thru ancient trees and have artesian wells. Never know what you are going to find until you drill!
@@Sylvan_dB half a mile west to my place a friend of mine drilled 330 ft and found very hard water. i drilled 360 and the drill crew said they never found water so good in their careers
Been watching your videos for a little bit brought back memories of working with a well driller down hear in south Florida when I was younger dangerous but rewarding job
Thank you for the video. Dad had a well drilled for lawn sprinkler system. Guy across the street had about 7 gpm. He was lucky, his hit 18 gpm. You can never tell what your going to get. Hope the crew / family and you are doing well. Take care.
Awesome
Good information
Sweet videos! When I was a kid in the 1970s, we had a well company drill with the “hammering” type of drill. It’s interesting, what different parts of the country use for casings.
Nice.
Hey Buddy, It's Kevin P. Just seeing you on TH-cam
I drove a milk tanker for 5 years I know all about top heavy and takin scary turns lol
I know how you feel about driving that drilling rig. The first top heavy piece of equipment I drove was a pumpet tanker the second was a 105 ft ladder truck. After that you learn to slow down to what the truck can handle.
Had my 380 foot well drilled last year and they brought in a huge driller. 6000hp air driller. They started at 8:30 and where done by noon.
Interesting about the different layers of sand and rock you're going through. Our well is 10yo with 50ft of clay and 60ft of steel casing, 425ft with 2 streams 1 @ 400 the other around 370. 4-5gpm
Glad you decided to put on a microphone! I really like watching your videos but sometimes you've been hard to hear
Here in southern Arizona on my ranch I had to go to 980 feet through decomposed granite, at $30 per foot. Then there was the rest of the costs. We did get 3 gallons a minute so it was OK. I enjoy your videos, I learn from them. I have 3 wells and they are all a different story. Thanks.
And you ended up in limestone when you got in a water zone ?
$30/pf isn't horrible, it's not great either, it's the depth that really got you. That stings.
In Ohio I’m getting quotes of $40 a foot anything over 100 feet deep. First 100’ is $4,000. 😐
@24:25 the tag indicates well depth of 405' and also the pump at 300'. Why is the pump so much higher than the bottom of the bore?
Thanks for taking the time/effort in making these vids!
00:24:58 I loved driving the rig, bouncy, so many gears to choose from and earplugs do little to stop the sounds : - )
Do you send that plastic casing Intel rock?. Because in our area, you have to set the casing by code 20 feet into the rock one length of casing. As far as I know, can only do that with steel because you have to drive it. That’s all for sealing the well up from surface contamination.
If I lived where near where you work. I would PAY you to let me drill a well or two.
Your content is awesome. If it had engineering animation every so often...it would be next level. Probably really expensive or too difficult...but it would be amazing.
Great video I always wondered why my well sucks and m y neibhors has to much water. Same thing as this video
I like what you said on safety. My Grandfather had a sign "SLOW DOWN" on his workbench, going slower ultimately gets the job done faster because of fewer mistakes rushing. I've also heard for DIY fixes doing the repair is the 3rd or 4th goal; not getting hurt is the 1st goal, not making a problem worse is the 2nd goal.
Amen! It's a dangerous profession, I try to make it as safe as possible & look out for those who are new around the equipment
Did you ever think about grabbing pan and see if you ever send gold away??
Thanks for sharing
And appreciate the info!!
I live in north Georgia and back in 2009 I had mine drilled to 405 ft with 4.5 gpm which is ok here in the mtn's. It costed me back then 10 dollars a ft and was wondering how much you charge for drilling?
Hey Man! Well I'm thinking building my own house. My question to you is best pressure for my tubs sinks and my other water items. 1inch trunk line from the city water meter. Then should I reduce it to 3/4 line and 1/2inch to the tubs and sinks and showers or 3/8 be better for pressure? Thanks enjoy your videos man.
My well man put a tag on my well.
Drillers around here run steel casing and it spins down in the opposite direction to the bit at the same time. No where near the issues with collapse this way. Much bonier material than sand and clay though.
Water well inspectors? ... We dont have any.
I bet you do a god job on every well
Hey my pump will has got galvanized pipe all the way down what be the best way to take it out without a machine
We just bought our first home and have been fighting water issues since the second day.
1st we had no water so I replaced the switch, drained the bladder tank and filled it back up following your instructions. That worked for a couple days. Then we lost water so I changed the filter and that fixed it for another day. Then we lost water again and I just removed the filter completely and we had water again but not even a full day later we have no water, filter is still out I took the pressure switch apart again and sanded the wires and that got the bladder tank to kick on but the pressure regulator hasn’t increased and we only got water back for 10-15 mins
Maybe your running the well out of water...
New Home? Check the toilets!!!! Make sure none are leaking and none are constantly overflowing in the back tank. I see it all the time.
Keep the breaker off over night and allow the well to recover, if it still happens as soon as u wake up, then you probably have a pump issue.
Love your content and your work ethic. I'm not sure if you answer comments. Who and how determines where to drill a well on a specific property?
Thanks
Typically the county decides everything. You pay for a permit & they suggest a specific Well Area
I hearken from the cable tool group of drillers . Yea it is slower ... but I think it is better .
I would like to know more about the bentonite and cement. When do you use it and why, how do you mix it and pump it, does it go in the well or around the casing. Thanks for the great videos.
Bentonite and cement grout form an impermeable layer around the casing and block the base of the casing/well off to prevent surface water from getting into the well and also helps to fix the casing in place. Typically mixed into a slurry and pumped with a cement pump into the well around the casing.
You only want nice clean water from the aquifer below.
Thanks for the video. Do you ever use pitless adapters and keep the pipe to the house underground like we do in the North? Thanks, great video's.
Only when requested by the customer.
Explain make the inspector happy. Is like do it right?
You could frac it and reduce the neighbors' flow rates being that close.

Are all of your vehicles right hand drive ? Or is it your camera ????
I don't no how deep my well is it was done prof but a 6 month filter may last a month and half full of mud help
Hard hat for drill rods...safety. ministry of labour would have a field day where I'm from. Love your channel, as always
You never mention using a dowser. Or if the homeowner had dowsing done and picked a specific spot. Fun fact: All the neighbors around me are deep wells at 572 feet up to 1000 feet, and some of them are slow return, in the range of 2 GPM and less. My mother and I did the dowsing at my house and we both hit the same spot. 445 feet and 7 GPM. I'm just curious if you ever had experience with dowsing?
Some of our deepest wells are from a dowser. I believe there's some fact to it, but its not a guarantee.
Something that I am very interested in, but was never discussed in any of the video's is the water surveying process, if any. How do you know where to drill to find water?
there is none it’s all rock down below just a matter of Hitting a vane. And where are you want to build a house if you have a septic going in at the house you want to be far away from the septic. But as far as finding water there is no guarantee you’ll get water. You get paid for the whole whether you have ordered or not. You paid by the foot. Get paid the same if you get 100 gallons a minute or 0 gallons a minute you always want to hit water because you have a happy customer happy customers have a way of paying you. We’re on the other hand and unhappy customer. You might have trouble getting your money.
Why PVC rather than steel casing? I've seen camera's sent down PVC wells with breaks in it. While steel can rust it's a slow process.
Wonder how that well would take to being fracked.
Can loos your hammer on a cave in loose circulation. Then you try blowing a hole and you can undermined all sorts of areas trying to get your tools out very hectic. Blowing air and water down and not knowing where it’s going is dangerous. the whole rig can get sucked into a gigantic hole. Can I have a blow up right under your feet or anywhere? It’s really spooky really fast.
I'll drill the 10" bit 15' into rock normally or more in some cases. Once I get past 60ft of casing, I typically don't use the 6" hammer to blow the hole clean, I use a rod size check valve, this cleans out the hole & allows casing to fall to the bottom and the holes clean without risk of the 6" hammer breaking the casing, once I get the casing to the bottom, I trip out & hook up the 6" bit/hammer & go down a clean hole to start drilling.
One thing I've learned about drilling is that it varies drastically region to region. We're in Rock country, so running into sand is tough on us bc we have to deal with it, with the equipment we have at that time, if it gets bad, we'll go back on day2-3 with the equipment to handle the situation We're in .
We sometimes run a 7ft piece of metal at the bottom connected to the pvc casing, handles the abuse from the hammer the first 5-10ft which is the most critical.
Do you guys use dowsers on your jobs?
On some of those jobs it might pay to have one come out
So because there was alot of water in the sand, a dowser may have found it,but that water was not usable . We're forced to drill where the Health dept says we have to.
@@h2omechanic does the health department come out and show you exactly where you're supposed to drill?
@Traci S. Aaron they provide a drawing of the property with specific measurements in footage & you must be within there "well area".
👍
How much does it cost to drill a well
Where are you located?

Wow all that work for 1 gallon per minute. Couldn’t even use a cheap pressure washer there. Drilling wells is sketchy
What state is your business. Thanks from. Sc

Are you familiar with Primary Water, have you ever drilled for it? An unlimited source of water everywhere. Google it.
I pissed my self at vinesse... I think you were thinking of finesse
Pudding like rock mixture?
Oh my lawd. ..
you mean limestone ?
Do you like drilling or servicing (wells) more?
Drilling pays the bills alot easier. But I like the service part because I enjoy meeting people and building a good relationship with customers. Drilling is tougher on the body & alot more risk to injury
I didn't get what the inspection was about
So somebody checks to see if the job is done correctly and honestly,
Where is the hard hats
When safety shows up the hard hats come out. Just like when the inspector shows up the job is performed correctly

Ever wash up anything interesting 🤔 like sharks teeth or whatever?
We've gotten sea shells from around 150ft before. I've seen other drillers find shark Teeth. Mind you, were 120miles off the coast line!
The camera down the hole don’t like grit, does the water that customer gets like grit. Shouldn’t all aspects be “for” the customer”
Why not pretend you are doing the very best job possible. For the customer. Instead of complaining about the inspector, who’s only job is to protect the customer from cheating drillers. Only cheating drillers should be afraid of the inspector. As a retired inspector, there were contractors, i could trust. There were many i could not. The ones i could trust on occasion i could tell them. ok i will pass your job today.
When you grouted in the casing ... you mean uou sealed the home with bentonite..... then cement ( grout ) up the drill hole from the bottom up ?
I hope you get this . I ned help .
