I own a '73 that I bought new (still stock), and a 2012 Z1000. The original Z engines, used in both 903 and 1015cc, had been in production until just a few years ago for Kawasaki police bikes. It was possible, if difficult, to acquire a brand new engine until recently. I believe that, by a large margin, the Z engine was the longest running production of any motorcycle engine. Interesting that the "J" version, 1982 I think, was not used for police bikes - it had a little more power but was not as dependable/long-lasting as the original Z engine. Kawasaki's reluctance to build four valve heads caused them to squeeze more horsepower out of the two valve "J" than was practical. Even the GPZ1100 (J-engine based) was considerably slower by the time it had a few thousand miles on it.

i owned a 1975 z1b .best bike ever ,it was such fun to ride .too bad the kawasaki won,t make it again .because if they did it would sell very well all over the world...it,s time to make bikes for riding again .
You could always buy a ZRX which has a lot of the qualities of the original in a slightly more modern package, still a retro looking bike though with dual shocks, old style swingarm and high bars . There is currently a terrific range of modern naked bikes for sale, never been better really.
My buddy owned the 1973 Z1 serial #00008 he got from Cycle Magazine after they test drove it. I had my 1975 Z1 for 32 years before I sold it. I have had my 1993 ZX11D for 20 years, but I’d trade it for my old Z1.
yep 0:51 to 0:56 good choice and great color scheme... i like them all... excellent bikes of their time... the z900s and z1000s used in Mad Max sound great.
I had a 1973 z1 900 in 1999. Got a buyer thur the mail that somehow knew I had it, he sent 1500.00 without seeing the bike and I sold it. Later a truck & trailer pull up in front and they loaded it up, bye bye it went . I have been sorry ever sence.
Look how bad the Z900 & Z1000 paint jobs are compared to the first 3 models Z1 Z1A + Z1B .. Kawasaki took the cheap root after having so much success with the Z1’s Visually the paint work & the 4 beautiful pipes were the Mona Lisa’s of motorcycles at the time , they lost 70% of the large bike market when the first Z1000 came out with the cheap paint & two large hair-dyers instead of those iconic 4 Quacker pipes , lots of blokes went to Suzuki 1000’s , they didn’t look that much better but they handled a lot better.

These were so much faster than Hondas 750 in the day.. I had 1 with an 1132 big bore kit that was scary fast..

I've heard rumors about Kawasaki resuming production of the Kz 1000 police bikes....anyone else heard of this?
