Nintendo's really listening to the fanbase for this title. Removing the 9-day wait time before the game even releases, and adding the thing people wanted most for free. Good on them

Fun Fact: 1ups are actually the least useful powerup in legit any Mario game as they don't even give you power.

Thank you Nintendo!!! All you need to do now is:
1. Get rid of the starting arrow at the beginning of each level.
2. Add the ability to make slopes!
3. Get rid of the small gap on the ground in between the starting section and the beginning of a stage when you play on Mario World or New Super Mario Bros modes! It bugs my OCD!

Oh nice! Thank you so much for adding this update. It'll definitely help me make my levels even longer without worrying about the player getting mad about having no checkpoints. It's something small but it can really make a difference. Keep the updates coming!
Points #1 and #2 are my all-time favorites from this update, with the curated list of stages created by Nintendo developers being an excellent addition as well - maybe people will look to these stages as templates for creating stages that aren't just "Don't Touch Anything" stages that overwhelm everything else right now.
Wow, they even added the "classic" powerup. The that whole mushroom/flower thing. I've been wanting THAT in the game since the very start. Dont get me wrong, the ability to have the player change instantly from small Mario to Fiery Mario or whatever is definitely great, but... I missed this mechanic alot.
+Misery Oh me too, and it does offer further speculation IF the same can be done with the Super Leaf, Super Cape, & Propeller Hat. I certainly hope so, and it wouldn't be the first time Nintendo has selectively omitted information so we can discover it ourselves.

All Yoshis in NSMBU are green, and the differently-colored Yoshis in SMW only appear in one level, so I really don't see a need for it

Man, good additions here. I knew we'd be needing the checkpoints, so I'm glad to see those, but I didn't even think about needing the super mushroom/ fire flower thing, but that's really awesome.
Updates that we want:
• Slopes
• Water and Lava pools
• Ice flower, tanooki suit, and some other power-ups
• More level themes
• More enemies
• More objects

I hadn't considered the idea that of people putting hazards under or around checkpoints, it suddenly seems logical that it might be why there wasn't checkpoints before...

Natsu Hategplus If you die, and skipped a checkpoint, it doesn't count and you start the level from the last checkpoint you did touch or start the level over.

This is quite possibly the best thing ever. Thank you Nintendo to listening to your fans and making this update possible. I am so glad to be able to now go back and fix my levels to include checkpoints and greatly increase the clear rates. Seriously, this is awesome. And the progressive mushroom/fire flower thing is amazing as well. This makes up for what happened to Rollers in Splatoon tbh.

We've come a long way. Back in 2015, this update felt so big it was unreal. In 2020, we got the World update which felt almost as big as an expansion or DLC
this is one of the better games ive gotten in a while. So glad they're adding checkpoints. Levels can be soooo much better now.

I think that adding place-able water and place-able lava would be interesting, and true to the earlier Mario installments. If you recall. There were ground levels in the original Super Mario Bros that featured water underneath bridges.
There are four more things that I've secretly been craving for them to add though:
1. Alternate backgrounds. For instance: some of the ground levels in Super Mario Bros had black backgrounds instead of blue backgrounds (thus to convey that it's night).
2. Alternate ground textures. One of my favorite levels in Super Mario Bros was 6-3; which featured white ground, white trees, and a white castle at the end. Also there are many ground textures from Super Mario Bros 3 that are not featured in this game.
3. Athletic themes from Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros U.
4. Alternate skins for enemies.
Very excited about checkpoints and status-aware powerups!
I simply can't wait for this update. There were a few people complaining about the lack of the Mushroom/Fire Flower mechanic, and I'm looking forward to re-uploading my longer & harder levels with checkpoints.

+Larry Bundy Jr The problem with that is that all of the other games used for Mario Maker play more or less the same, with a few moves or items changed. Super Mario Bros. 2: USA would be, by far, the most different and would probably require them to add or change a lot of things. The "Pick Up And Throw" mechanic alone would probably require a lot of changes.
It won't, it works way too differently to other Mario Games
The tile sets for lost levels are slightly different than smb1 but it wouldn't be enough to add it in the game.
Yes!! thank you! I am so going to update my courses once I get that update since we really did need those check points. plus it would help a lot for those that struggle on the stages they are trying to beat.

I’m not sure why people were so concerned that there was no online multiplayer before there were even pokeys in the game.
I noticed in the edit tool there was an arrow on the checkpoint as if it will change directions. Will it change directions or do something else?
Checkpoints would have been great for my levels I can now stop adding secret paths in case one is too hard or just keep them but add checkpoints.. Always wondered why checkpoints weren't unlockable. I am glad it will be here. I hope this is a free patch =D

I remember being excited for this update coming back in years. I can't believe that this happened 8 years ago...
This should've been included at launch (considering that most of these are essential parts of the main Mario series), but it's good that they finally put all of this in.
I feel like a lot of people will complain about the checkpoint flag making you big
Just put a spot that always does damage near it
What about when they die and respawn? Or do you always spawn big after a checkpoint?

that's a fundamental part of Mario...
+Liky growing after a checkpoint has always been a feature in the new super mario bros series so idk if you'll be able to change it
Nintendo next can you add these 6 ideas I came up with: 1. Koppa kids 2. Star coins 3.place-able lava, water and the soda from soda jungle. 4.more bullet bills like banzai bill or king bill. 5. More enamys and a world editor for each style like if choose a super Mario bros style the world is super Mario bros style and you could only use the style for the courses that you choosen for the world editor. And you publish courses on the worlds. 6. More maps and styles.
