If you have old windshield wipers laying around you can take them apart and theres a stainless steel bar in them. You can cut and bend them for tension wrenches. Its just a good way to save a few bucks and get custom tools out of it.
My brother bought this kit for my father and I back in July for our birthdays. It works great. Now I'm hooked on picking and have bought picks to expand my set. I definitely recommend this kit.
I want this kit just to learn how to protect my house. I learned a lot off your picks. You are a genius. For the moment my house is protected 60% thanks to you. I didn't use those things to pick anything that not mine.I modified all my locks thanks to you, but only with rudimentary things, not profesional things
I lost my keys. Thanks to this channel, I took the initiative to learn lockpicking. Now, in order to get into my house I just pick my lock. Ive not used house keys in almost a year now.
Ive been watching bill and a few other locktubers for a while and i think its time i stopped procrastinating and got myself a beginner's pick kit, hello from wales...
I made a pick set about twenty years ago out of an old carburetor screwdriver and a heavy paperclip. Did it's job, one time. Thanks for the info about different picks and what to look for.
I bought one of these sets not long after you first posted this video due to this review, first of all I couldn't have asked for better customer service and I was very surprised w/the quality... I've actually used that last pick as a sort of Bogata and it worked well. Also the two half diamonds helped me learn to spp a bit, I could really feel the pin when it rode up the angle and it reached the apex. I only did this method on junk locks just in case it wasn't good on the pins. Now I really prefer the hooks. Thanks for the video as always!
my grampa used to be a lock Smith after he retired from the Army air Corp. I learn to pick locks when I was around 8, Grandpa died when I was 7 and I started reading all his old machinist manuals. I made my first set of picks by filing feeler gauges into shape, 35 years later and i still do it the same way today. but I'm looking to buy for a really nice set for my son. do you have any suggestions?
This set is pretty amazing. I just got mine today and besides adding some heat shrink wrapping to the handles I didn't have to do anything else to them.
thanks for this review Bill, I finally pulled the trigger on buying a starter set because of this video. no more using paper clips to pick locks for me!
Those people who might think plastic training locks are too easy to open need to remember, that those of us who are still new to lock picking a lot of it is still a mystery, I mean I understand the principles of how locks work and with a bit of patience I can get the 2 padlocks I own to open, but when it comes to spool pins, serrated pins, pins inside pins pins! Whoa! slow down! lol, So for us, these relatively simple training locks are a great idea, they allow a visual understanding of what's actually going on as it's going on, if they are too complicated a lot of potential pickers would be turned off, it's a great starting point to learn the basic concepts and get a better understanding of what the different parts are and how they work and interact with each other.
Bill, people say I may be your long lost Irish brother??? I prefer the descriptive 'fastidious ' rather than everything you talk about analy 😉 Great video as ALWAYS....... much much appreciated over here on the Emerald Isle...... thanks a million
Bill. That tension tool you say is for shutter locks im thinking maybe there is a way to modify it to work as a tensioner for smiley locks? Any ideas on if that would be achievable??
Just got this one in the mail. It's a really fun kit. Already got past the training lock quite fast and the James Bond things are crap... but I had some padlocks lying around which have been picked by now :D It's really nice, will upgrade some picks because I'm in Europe and these are just a bit too thick for some locks. But it's also a good thing, since I might not break anything that fast. Thanks Bill for recommending this one, it is great! For that price, great buy!
7:43 - That Tensioner isn't popular in North America either. Most popular, in this order, are: Keys, Freehand Abrasive Saw and a Truck, Sledge and Punch.
I live in the UK and letter boxes aren't very common as far as I can tell, we usually have a letterbox on our front door instead so you'd need to pick the front door lock.
Good set! only took 7 working days. Great channel! I have picked every lock I can find (legally) In under 5 min. first try and the easy ones under 1 min. Fun hobby for sure! Planning some bar bets ;-)
Another great video for us beginners. Sounds like a bargain for the kit, but I'm at a loss for why the last item was for a UK letter boxr. Here in the UK our letter boxes are part of the front door and spring loaded... no lock.
I've opened my similar (cheapest) clear and (cheapest) cutaway locks, by barely jiggling the flat backside of a pick. Unless it is a Schlage or Kwikset or Masterlock or some other name-brand lock manufacturer, and if you are only paying $3-$9 dollars for it, it will probably be nothing more than a demonstration lock, as you said, due to tolerances. I took one apart to repin and couldn't re-assemble it in working order.
Thanks to this review this was my first non-homemade lockpick set. I just got it today. Took 4 business days to get. So fast shipping for 10$. I can agree to everything Bill has said but I want to add my two cents. Mine all the rivets save one hook are all the right direction. This does bug my OCD but not enough to knock it down. I have have 0 qualms with the kit itself. My issues are the extras. The credit card kit is well lack luster and arrived with bent picks. Oh well no big deal I didn't plan to ever carry it. But the practice lock...I got it and tried to insert the key and it only went in about 4 of the 7 pins deep. First off yes it is 7 pins. I thought the last pin only kept the core in place but nope I was wrong. I shot some WD-40 inside and nothing. I had to tap the key in with a small rubber mallet to shot a pin up and get the key in. That pin is now stuck and will not come out for anything. I have emailed the company and am awaiting response now. I might update this if anyone cares. All that being said this kit is amazing. Mine I didn't even sand as they came pretty smooth. I will suggest one thing Bill did not and that is to put some heat shrink wrapping on the handles. The picks are not sharp edged but the handles are. Thank you Bill for the suggestion. My collection is now only going to grow along with my skill set.
I have to say after watching this video I purchased the set. I find it even better than a more expensive set that I purchased from Hudson lock, HPC. So tops of the picks do not cut into my fingers such as the more expensive HPC set does. Also in addition you get a lot more for your money. Yes the training lock is not great. These little James Bond. But the pics into themselves Superior I like their product I'll be doing more business with them
Hey Bill, I'm relatively new to the channel and this was my first time checking out your website. I feel like I won't really be going outside anymore as I'll be too busy learning how to pick. by the way, do you ever reuse intros?
Nice kit indeed! Good demo lock too. I prefer springsteel over stainless, to me it offers better feedback. Although you may use them all at some time, only three will be used on a daily basis.
I'm not sure there is actually a "game." I found some things on Amazon, but they are just picks with descriptions like "TAKE YOUR GAME TO THE NEXT LEVEL:" One is a seller called "Mr. Sherlock." There is no actual game in associated products or anything though. Edit: After some more searching I'm more convinced "game" is just being used as "learn to pick locks because it is fun" and not because there is any sort of game involving it.
So, what sandpaper is recommended for the smoothing? My aunt asked me tonight for a locksmith recommendation, she lost the key to her document lockbox. I ended up telling her how to get a new key, as I've never picked a lock, lol. She didn't even know I'd been watching your videos, it was just a request out of the blue.
The Praxis Dualguage kit from UKBumpkeys (link to US and UK warehouses in description). It has all the usual suspects of hooks and rakes in both .015" and .023" AND it comes with two top of keyway tension wrenches. I've been picking for a year on mostly high end locks, and it has served me well. Be careful with the .015".. they don't like force. But then again, locks that have a super pericentric keyway and security pins need light tension anyway.
Set was back down to $29. Went to buy it and the web site would not sell it to me because I live in Ohio! Are you kidding me! I bought plenty of lock pick sets from other places and they had no problem sending them to me in Ohio.
great videos , I've been watching these for the last day or so and it's really perked my interest in lock picking and i wanted to know, other than the obvious (master lock) what's a good lock to start picking when I 1st start out
A tension wrench and 4 about half length picks. A medium hook, half diamond, snake rake, and a city rake. I bought one a week ago and it's a pretty neat kit, but the tension wrench is a little awkward to use.
Kaezorth Those chinese made credit card sets have a BOK wrench. Even though you could probably fit a .050" prybar in there, they certainly dont include one.
What happended between videao 750 and 1088, there you did not recommend the plastic-look-through-padlock to begin learning lockpicking on. Now I feel a bit bad buying this kit :'(
actually I got one that looks like that looks cheaper than that one and no e book. and mine was around 14 bucks. wish I found this one instead. one I got had a time of dual sided rake looking picks or something.
I'm not even a beginner yet, never picked a lock in my life(besides the credit card on the latch), but I gotta admit, this is pretty fascinating stuff. I signed up for every giveaway, hoping to score a beginner's kit. Are these clear locks worth it for a beginner? or is it just better to grab a lock and get used to not seeing what you're doing?
If you've been watching Bill for any length of time, you will have that acrylic lock mastered in the first minute because you already have a fundamental understanding of what's going on inside the lock. Before finding LockLab I ordered a chinesium set of lockpicks from Amazon that included one of the acrylic locks so that I could learn as I had always had an interest. It was great as a demonstration tool for others who wanted to know how the magic happened, but aside from that it wasn't useful as a training tool.
Thanks for the input! I think I'll just get a build a lock off ebay to start. It seems like I'll get more bang for my buck. I do know I'll screw myself getting a cheap pick set. I was checking out the southord PXS-14, but I'm still researching.
That was the set I purchased to replace/supplement my inexpensive first set after I bent a few hooks. I was pleased with the quality of the set and think it's a pretty good buy, though the picks felt a little small in my hands. Sadly that set was stolen from me so I've ordered one of these kits based on Bills review to see if I like the form factor a little better.
Good to hear the quality is good. If I don't like the grips I can 3d print out new ones. Being a total noob(I literally just got into this at 10pm last night), I always worry I won't have enough tools and have to wait for more to come in the mail. But I guess I might as well take the plunge and see how it goes.
I am a relatively noob lock-pick hobbyist and bought that southord kit. Its not bad. I did supplement it with a top of the key way peterson pry bar tension wrench. And a bogota "triple peak" pick from sparrows. With all of that it makes a pretty decent setup. I did buy the mastering the lock kit when it was $29 because well it did look a bit better for around the same price and had some picks i was gonna order from sparrows ie: the deforest diamond. And from the looks of it, the half diamonds picks in this set seem to be better than the one that comes in the southord beginners kit. When I get this pick set in and play with it a bit I'll be able to get a better opinion as the quality of it.
HELP! I have a lock that is just kicking my ass. I have taken it apart and it's all standard pins. I have worked this lock for months now and I can't get it. what am I doing wrong? I can pick high security locks no problem.
andy d What brand is it? Is the keyway paracentric? I have an oldish Yale branded Y1 that gives me a lot of trouble from a combination of tight tolerances, high cuts, and not owning an ideal pick to get the pins high enough through the warding (yet!). Let us know a bit more about it and we may be able to help.
Its just a kwikset. And I can pick it if I turn the keyway in the locking direction. The keyway is wide and I can almost see the pins right where the key would put it.
These look like the common, metal-wedged Chinese picks that are flush on the market, just adapted into a branded kit. The only two differences that I can make out is that maybe their shafts might be a tad slimmer, viz., euro-style, and that they might go a bit heavier on the post-tumbling black coating. Doesn’t look particularly enticing.
They're shit. Stamped out onto cheap metal and sold in droves to any shitey company that thinks they have a brand. You can pretty much saw through wood with the rough edges these things have.
Has anybody seen models of those acrylic locks that you can actually repin? Would be nice to slowly move on to spools and serrated one at a time, and being able to see whats going on, to understand what i feel.
Haven't seen one specifically designed for that, but on many of them you can just pop off the cover that holds the springs in place. They're often just press-fit, not glued or fixed in any other way.
Well on mine it is glued in place. You can see that they dripped some acetone or something around the edge of it. John Beauvais thanks i will look into those!
i dont know if i just got a bad 1 but i have 1 of them clear locks and the bidding on it is so poor i can pick it with a macdonalds straw not worth it even for beginners but as i said i may have just had a poor lock
No you're right, the tolerances are slack. but this is more to show you what's happening when you pick more than training you how to pick locks. one thing i can see it being good for is understanding how deep your pick goes to hit each pin. but i don't think it's as much of a trainer as it is a real life demonstration of the mechanics behind picking. I think if you wanted to get serious you'd buy one of those ultimate adversary locks with 7 pins. That's more what I'd consider a good trainer because it's a real lock. (the one he's giving away in combo)
Jeff Moss HPC makes some great equipment from small edc kits to those beautiful classic key cutters we used a lot before the new ones where i typically had a tupperware container full of the hpc key cards to accurately cut to code. Your the infamous DEFCON Jeff Moss right?
ithan fenair Since Bill already spends a bunch of his own time recording & editing these videos for us to watch maybe *YOU* should translate them with subtitles! Because let's not forget about how he also has a job, a family, picks (or works on picking) these locks as well as having a hobby or 2. Plus we can't forget about any traveling he does. Not trying to be a dick here, just calling it as I see it. So if it means THAT much to you maybe you do the vid translations in your own time & on your own dime.
I don't think Ithan Fenair understands English, so he couldn't do it. He was able to probably use Google Translator to type his second message, but the translations are still off.
I think I just found a new hobby, love the videos. No just to get tooled up.
If you have old windshield wipers laying around you can take them apart and theres a stainless steel bar in them. You can cut and bend them for tension wrenches. Its just a good way to save a few bucks and get custom tools out of it.
Just a note, not all windshield wipers have a stainless steel bar in them.
Pro tip: watch series on kaldrostream. Me and my gf have been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Grayson Elliott yea, I have been watching on kaldroStream for since december myself :)
Just got mine in the mail today! I was taken aback by how heavy they were but found out that I actually picked better with them that way. Thanks Bill!
what was delivery time frame, i just ordered today , thanks

Just bought one. I am looking forward to it. Thank you Bill for reviewing this, it made me buy this. I watch all of your videos.
thanks for the recommendation. super excited for my first lock pick set to come in the mail.
Very nice starter kit with your generous twist, nice going Bill
I made a pick set about twenty years ago out of an old carburetor screwdriver and a heavy paperclip. Did it's job, one time. Thanks for the info about different picks and what to look for.

Not a bad little kit. I might have to buy one. I have tons of kits already but I kind of collect them.
thanks for this review Bill, I finally pulled the trigger on buying a starter set because of this video. no more using paper clips to pick locks for me!

Bill, people say I may be your long lost Irish brother???
I prefer the descriptive 'fastidious ' rather than everything you talk about analy 😉
Great video as ALWAYS....... much much appreciated over here on the Emerald Isle...... thanks a million
That Intro was awesome. Love the music, love the channel. Great video.
Bill. That tension tool you say is for shutter locks im thinking maybe there is a way to modify it to work as a tensioner for smiley locks? Any ideas on if that would be achievable??
That's a pretty neat little starters kit.
Thanks!!!!! Your videos always get me through stressful days and such.
Are these still around? Can’t find them in stock in my searches.
"Sandwiched between these two shiny bits"
Luv it! :)
Thanks for another great give away .And have a Awesome Memorial Day Mr.Bill
7:43 - That Tensioner isn't popular in North America either.
Most popular, in this order, are: Keys, Freehand Abrasive Saw and a Truck, Sledge and Punch.
I just got into lock picking a couple weeks ago I'm glad I found your channel
I live in the UK and letter boxes aren't very common as far as I can tell, we usually have a letterbox on our front door instead so you'd need to pick the front door lock.
Good set! only took 7 working days. Great channel! I have picked every lock I can find (legally) In under 5 min. first try and the easy ones under 1 min. Fun hobby for sure! Planning some bar bets ;-)

Surprisingly great kit for the price. I really wanted to see the different hook tips up close though.
I consider those clear acrylic pocks more of a demonstration lock rather then a training lock....
I agree the tolerances on them are so low you can almost pick them with a spoon lol but great for getting a visual on whats happening.
LockTest they would be a lot more useful with a couple of spool pins I think.
I took one apart to repin and couldn't re-assemble it in working order.
yeah, they're great for explaining to someone how a lock works, but as a training device, there are better options.
Where can I buy the ruler?
anyone got a link to this mr sherlock game?
X X I was wondering the same thing. I couldn't find anything via Google.
X X Me too please
I'm not sure there is actually a "game." I found some things on Amazon, but they are just picks with descriptions like "TAKE YOUR GAME TO THE NEXT LEVEL:" One is a seller called "Mr. Sherlock." There is no actual game in associated products or anything though.
Edit: After some more searching I'm more convinced "game" is just being used as "learn to pick locks because it is fun" and not because there is any sort of game involving it.
tell me when you find it
Maybe is just another game of Sherlock Holmes with a different name and people call it Mr. Holmes but i am not sure, maybe we can ask in Reddit.
Great job, Bill!
Does these work for Eurolocks as well?
Those learn lock picking locks look super cool
Excellent video. Keep it up!
This looks like a great starter kit.
Going to need the picks Bill.
Cool little kit
Looks like a nice little kit : )
Bill do you have a recommendation for a good mid line lock pick set
The Praxis Dualguage kit from UKBumpkeys (link to US and UK warehouses in description). It has all the usual suspects of hooks and rakes in both .015" and .023" AND it comes with two top of keyway tension wrenches. How tick are these picks? Are These 25 thousandths of an inch tick?.
Bought it pretty much straight away. Good price and I need the tools :)
Great kit!
Set was back down to $29. Went to buy it and the web site would not sell it to me because I live in Ohio! Are you kidding me! I bought plenty of lock pick sets from other places and they had no problem sending them to me in Ohio.
Great starter set!
I just sent this video to a friend I was telling about lock sport.
Very nice... I might have to get it.
Its odd they put the lever lock tension tool but no picking wire lol.
great videos , I've been watching these for the last day or so and it's really perked my interest in lock picking and i wanted to know, other than the obvious (master lock) what's a good lock to start picking when I 1st start out
Please place the item link from amazon or ebay
I love these video I am sitting here playing with my only abus 65/40 with a Tension and a Chinese Pick that works for me :D
Nice kit.
I like this kit and it seems to be a decent price.
Very nice starter pick set for $29!!!
good bang for your buck there!
Nice! Keep it up!
Great video this precisely something that would be great to start me off.
Bill, this is the full set of tools you need to become lockpicking hero. I will be glad to win it, due to not having one :(
What's in the faux credit card?
A tension wrench and 4 about half length picks. A medium hook, half diamond, snake rake, and a city rake. I bought one a week ago and it's a pretty neat kit, but the tension wrench is a little awkward to use.
SaggyC is it BOK or TOK?(the tension wrench)
Kaezorth Those chinese made credit card sets have a BOK wrench. Even though you could probably fit a .050" prybar in there, they certainly dont include one.
What happended between videao 750 and 1088, there you did not recommend the plastic-look-through-padlock to begin learning lockpicking on.
Now I feel a bit bad buying this kit :'(
He Means To See How The Lock Works Not To Practice!
nifty looking lock pick kit.
actually I got one that looks like that looks cheaper than that one and no e book. and mine was around 14 bucks. wish I found this one instead. one I got had a time of dual sided rake looking picks or something.
Where can I order this kit?
Check the description.
bosnianbill sorry for asking a noob question whats the name of the tool to apply presure on a car lock after u remove the metal plate off it
Evil Alucard a tensioner.
Riley Fenley thank you so much
Bill for you what is the safety lock for a new house door?
what does this do with video games?
the similar in EU is the "Lock Cowboy" KIt
great kit
I'm not even a beginner yet, never picked a lock in my life(besides the credit card on the latch), but I gotta admit, this is pretty fascinating stuff. I signed up for every giveaway, hoping to score a beginner's kit.

When I get this pick set in and play with it a bit I'll be able to get a better opinion as the quality of it.
I need a training lock. Just starting have 3 different style of locks I'm working on currently
@patdud1979 which out is that?? I'm interested
HELP! I have a lock that is just kicking my ass. I have taken it apart and it's all standard pins. I have worked this lock for months now and I can't get it. what am I doing wrong? I can pick high security locks no problem.
tight tolerances can be a bitch. try heavy tension. but ill bet your over setting a pin if you cant find the binding pin.
andy d What brand is it? Is the keyway paracentric? I have an oldish Yale branded Y1 that gives me a lot of trouble from a combination of tight tolerances, high cuts, and not owning an ideal pick to get the pins high enough through the warding (yet!). Let us know a bit more about it and we may be able to help.
Its just a kwikset. And I can pick it if I turn the keyway in the locking direction. The keyway is wide and I can almost see the pins right where the key would put it.
oh... well never mind about tight tolerances.
is it attached to your door?
at the moment it is. I tore it apart yesterday
Just looking at it the rivets are bugging me too so I get it...
Damn, how many intros do you have?
Questions about the intros are asked on every video. They are fan made, sent to him. Feel free to make one and submit to him.
Actually, I've been making them myself using Adobe After Effects for the past couple of years. I'd still love to see what you come up with tho!
They're often just press-fit, not glued or fixed in any other way.
djteac Check out the Sparrows cutaway locks I know you can repin those for training with various kinds of pins
Well on mine it is glued in place. You can see that they dripped some acetone or something around the edge of it.
John Beauvais thanks i will look into those!
Great review, thanks.

I want that ruler....
The kit is, as current time, a 49.99 value, no longer a 29 dollars.

For 29$ I would go with a standard kit from sparrow 19$ Canadian 👍😉
Nice intro music.
i dont know if i just got a bad 1 but i have 1 of them clear locks and the bidding on it is so poor i can pick it with a macdonalds straw not worth it even for beginners but as i said i may have just had a poor lock
(the one he's giving away in combo)
looks like a clone of an HPC kit.
Jeff Moss HPC makes some great equipment from small edc kits to those beautiful classic key cutters we used a lot before the new ones where i typically had a tupperware container full of the hpc key cards to accurately cut to code.
Your the infamous DEFCON Jeff Moss right?

Seria Genial que tradujeras tus videos al español (Subtitulos)
Asi subirias tus seguidores
Like si quieres que tradusca
It would be great to translate your videos into Spanish (Subtitles) This way your followers..
ithan fenair Since Bill already spends a bunch of his own time recording & editing these videos for us to watch maybe *YOU* should translate them with subtitles!
وللعربية أيضا ؟؟؟؟
I don't think Ithan Fenair understands English, so he couldn't do it. He was able to probably use Google Translator to type his second message, but the translations are still off.
Nice
Do not let your webmaster pick my email, since I just ordered one online.
I want this bad I want to start lock picking
I would like to win this... the only picks I have are from iFixit
