The theme song is still used 40+ years later on The Price is Right, although rarely. It's been used for cars during primetime specials and Dream Car Week on the daytime show.
Originally, Bert Convy hosted the 1990 reboot of Match Game until he was told he had a brain tumor, and Convy passed away in 1991, I saw his final resting place at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills.
@@KT72273 this was before, 1987 it was planned to be syndicated by coca-cola telecommunications. But there was a story on Entertainment Tonight about it where they revealed his age and that made them back out.
His age was a well kept secret until then. He wasn't even ask to host the Joker's Wild unlike all other hosts on the roster who all turned it down because they believe that Jack Barry should be the one to host it.

Nobody knew his age until that Entertainment Tonight incident. Even his camouflaged age during his time on Match Game (1973-82) was a well kept secret.
Around 1985, there was talk of another Match Game reboot in the works, and Gene Rayburn was to return as host. However, when "Entertainment Tonight" did a report on this, they mentioned his age during this, and supposedly this is what shelved it. It also prevented Rayburn from finding any more steady work in television for the rest of his life.
According to the book The Matchless Gene Rayburn, he wanted to host the 1990 version, but Mark Goodson who didn’t really like Gene to begin with wanted Convy. After he dropped out, they went to Ross Shaffer. Gene wanted to be able to come on the first show & do a ceremonial handoff of the Mike to Ross & Goodson wouldn’t even allow that.
In regards to the "Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour" I put the blame on messing up the game on Mark Goodson for screwing up "Hollywood Squares" and while making "Match Game" look good.
Even 35 years later, I wouldn't want to touch this version in due respect to Gene Rayburn who would have wanted it that way. I'm sticking with the 70s version instead.
I think a big reason why Peter Marshall wasn't selected to do the Hollywood Squares version of this show was because he just came off of doing "Fantasy" in the timeslot before (for more than a year). It would've looked rather stale & tacky to have him continue with this show. A second reason I wouldn't doubt is that they were trying to groom Jon Bauman as a game show host for the "new generation". While he did look a lot more professional in a suit rather than a tank top, I dont think he would've cut it for a major game show role. Unfortunately, blocks of morning game shows as well as that unrealized new breed of game show hosts was a non reality a decade later.
Scapino Media, if Peter Marshall were to of been selected as the host of the Hollywood Squares portion of the show (and he accepted it of course), do you think The Match Game Hollywood Squares Hour would of lasted more than 9 months?
So many of the "stars" used on the show were not really stars.....some were to become big time future stars such as Arsenio Hall and Jay Leno just to name a couple. But a great many of the celebrities were really bland and boring, or were soap actors from NBC soaps.....That the stars were not briefed about the question material really made the show so bland too...and getting a win by default...no no no, players should have to earn that square themselves! And no secret square game, no money awarded at all for Match Game front game winners.....and of course no Peter Marshall, this series was doomed.

Gene was supposed to host a match game revival a couple of years later on ABC. But the network changed their mind after learning his age.
Bert Convy did the pilot but couldn't go on after his cancer diagnosis!

I had always wondered why Peter Marshall didn’t host this program. It was an absolute mistake to not include him.
Especially, considering he co-hosted what it replaced.
The show is now back. Part of 18Universal summer line up. Now in its 8th season

Loved this game show as a kid even though it was kind of weird host wise
Arlene Francis had her final TV appearance on this show.
Does anyone remember the rock group Jon Bauman was part of before he became a game show host - Sha Na Na?

Peter Marshall was Quigley-Heatter guy. He would never have worked for Goodson-Todman due to his loyalty to them
Makes a great song about Jason from the Care Bears Movie standing by his desk.

Maybe, if the guests could play off of him like Paul Lynde and Buddy Hackett could, it could have lasted at least a little while longer.
IMHO, even if it didn't last, it still would've a better show with Peter hosting.
Even if they had asked him to host, Marshall probably would have refused it with the no-bluff, win-by-default format.
Watching on Pluto TV now. Does anyone know the answer about Mr. T that was bleeped and blurred out by ‘celebrity’ Jesse Welles?
Was watching Guiding Light at the time, so I never saw the original run until Buzzr - it's awful and I wish they would replace it.
Maybe if it were at noon est. Then Hot Potato and Search For Tomorrow from 3 to 4 est. Might have lasted a bit longer

There was one episode that came on the other day, and aside from Jon sitting on the Match Game panel, I didn't recognize a single "star."

@LittleRockElevators well yeah
Watching reruns on Buzzr, this show had great potential except for the fact that a cringey cornball like Bauman was co-host. He's downright awful.
I agree. Bauman was horrible. He tried too hard to be funny.
Didn't Butch Hartman appear as a contestant one time?
He was on the show for three days and won nearly $3000.
