  • EPISODE #5 - The diary of our Great Divide Trail (GDT) adventure. This is the 5th of a 7 part series we affectionately are calling the "GREAT DIVIDE TRAIL DIARIES". Follow us from Field B.C. to The Crossings Resort.
It was far harder than expected and more beautiful than imagined.
Dudley (Bruce Watts), Crusher (Chris Abbott) & Mango (Tracy Généreux) - and many new friends - thru-hiked the Great Divide Trail during the summer of 2021. 1100-ish crazy hard and wild kilometres from the Alberta/Montana international border (near Waterton), to Kakwa Provincial Park along the continental divide in the Canadian Rockies. Considered the "Wildest" Thru-Hike in North America - We agree!
Special thanks to Chris Abbott (aka Crusher) and Tracy Généreux (aka Mango) and all our other new friends: Tyson, Arthur, Marylou, Shira, Richard, Glen, Noémie, Fran, Theresa, Paul, Nicole, Isla, Noah, and Munchie (woof woof)

Great episode! Lots of beauty - and tough conditions.
It looks like you were probably through Kiwetinok in early-mid July. That route did get some route updates in late July in the last 5km bushwhack portion to avoid the thickest parts, but certainly it's still tough. The rough stuff on the road is mostly further down in the section that is bypassed, whereas that upper 10km is much better. The lower road actually has several portions that are worse/slower than anything on Kiwetinok, including about 1km where you're pretty much on hands and knees. The upside with that section is that it's filled with free gear the willows the pull off peoples packs :) You might have found a trekking pole in there, because we found a ZRest and a waterbottle ;)

Section D was a bit nightmarish! But we survived and saw great views :) Thanks for the video! Really cool that you captured the collie creek ford. That was something!

Famous words at 22:21 as you enter into the Howse River where Parks Canada has decided not to maintain the Howse Pass trail haha. Great video! Glad I can view your experience on the GDT!

If I could ask…what 7 day spread camp to camp would you do? I only have 6 nights to do a piece of this trail this summer..and I want to see the best of the Rockies…pretty sure I’m not doing section D lol 😂 Im rolling my ankle just watching! Love your series! Subscribed!

Thanks so much for the kind words. It’s hard to say which section, they are all beautiful in their own way - even section D - but I was most blown away with sections E and A. E has easier access but busier than A. Enjoy!

Another beautiful video. I think you truly capture the essence of this #wildestthruhike. I really look forward to these and pass them on to prospective hikers who ask what to expect! Great Work!

Great job you three. Equipment issues are inevitable and it looks like you had your share. Really appreciate the detail and amount you filmed. Well put together my friend.
