    while the "inside the simulation" ending is a bad ending. I love the mental image of the player and a couple owlks sitting at a table with one of their game boards on it as they teach us how to play. allowing us another thing to do for eternity.

      I find it "apocalyptically calming". It's both depressing, and slightly optimistic. Yeah, you're dead, and it's been God knows how long since you've seen the real world (not to mention the world as you know it is gone), but you're "alive", and at least you can chill with everyone else.

      I think the secret slide reels are made by people that found the burning of their history, the prisoner's house getting burnt and torturing him with depravation as monstrous, that's why they keep illustrating the owlks as shadowy with an evil grin casting the symbols seen on the prison's locks on the starting slide of the secret reels.
      The rest of the owlks are way too proud to recognise to the world that they've made a devastating mistake based on impulse, that's why they handpicked their shameful slides.

    2:50 about that Owlk that is watching the reel and missing their home moon. I back up that idea.
    If you flash your lantern by focusing it on the display screen, the Owlk gets startled and shuts the projector until you leave the area and teleport back to the main building before they start running it again. It seems like they're scared of being caught watching that or missing their home moon.

    Based on the stuck in the simulation ending saying they don’t hunt you anymore seems to mean that They act the way they do because the see you as a threat. Which means normally they are likely playing the board game and doing other pastimes when your not there.

    The song they play during their ritual being called Elegy for the Rings on the soundtrack suggests it's some kind of mourning ceremony, which I suppose ties back into your idea about them still missing home despite all their best efforts to reproduce it

      Absolutely. Actually, I believe we may learn a few things from the names of some of the tracks. I listened to them a lot but I cannot replace all of them in the context of the game yet. But for instance, "The Sound of Water" or "The Lost Waltz" have interesting names I think. :)

    My theory for the remaining reels with hints in them, and the burnt codes is this.
    I believe after the Prisoner was locked up, there might have been a group of Owlks that secretly sided with him. They might have attempted to free him, prompting the others to move the Dreamworld's Vault into the Underground Cave and burn the codes. Maybe some doubted their treatment of the Prisoner, so some freedom was granted to him, with his cell being pretty large and his telescope and instrument being there. Maybe this was used to convince the Prisoner's allies to stop trying to free him. Then sometime later his allies started hoping for the chance that someone from the outside could come and free the Prisoner eventually. So before they were all going to the Dreamworld definitively, they scattered secret reels to guide anyone who would come, believing the Prisoner was the only one worthy of salvation.
    It's a theory and it's kinda wonky on its own, but I think it makes a bit of sense.

  • @Throckmorpheus

    I mean the fact that they are just game design decisions doesn't mean there's not also narrative behind them. In both the base game and EotE all the narrative was built up around and alongside the game design, that's a large part of what sets outer wilds apart, so I think there's definitely value in trying to work out the confusing web of clues towards the end of the timeline. I'd bet that it's set up that way since it isn't necesary information to progress so it hasn't been simplified down to the same degree.
    The main thing that's still fucking with me about it is how the Prisoner has a memory of visiting the code room. The vision ends before we see inside, so maybe it was originally used for something else? I'd bet the control room always had the lock, if only to stop kids and such from getting in and messing with important controls, so maybe there were more of those more utility-minded rather than secrecy-minded locks back when they were still living at least partially in the real world, and that's what it was for? Though that then raises the question of what exactly happened to them.
    The fact that the sarcophagus codes were added and then destroyed suggests there's multiple levels of history overlaid in these places, which makes working out what they were like originally a much more difficult feat than working things out about the Nomai, with their odd insistence on never cleaning up their wreckage or experiments.
    Also, I think there's maybe a detail you missed when considering the strangers in the simulation - all of the ones in each area die when their area's corresponding fire go under, which means they're all in the areas they originally entered at. Also all the areas have their docks shut off or disabled by default such that nobody could go and visit without the inhabitants purposefully letting them in. It feels like they've definitely become more xenophobic and closed off in the millenia they've been in the simulation, since the systems being there in the first place suggests the originally meant to be able to come and go as they pleased.
    On top of that, falling in the water would almost certainly kill them, so maybe they're just too scared to travel on the rafts now that they're in there permanently.
    Apologies if you've mentioned any of those things in parts 1 and 2 I don't have a very good memory

      @Throckmorpheus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bbbbbbb51 I mean their culture is clearly very water-focused and they designed the dream world before they discovered entry via death so it wouldn't be an issue they had to consider. They also built one of the fires directly beneath a giant dam, they clearly weren't originally thinking in terms of surviving for millenia, it just sort of happened by accident.

    There is a lot that happens between the Owlks creating the simulation and the last person in the simulation dying in the real world that we never get to fully comprehend. And that is a major part of what makes this DLC fit in so well with the rest of the Outer Wilds, because you just have to accept that fact.

    • @BarbaricCrafter1
      @BarbaricCrafter1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Building more on this, this is what makes the ending with the prisoner also so overwhelming. Every other Owlk is hostile and despite having the ability to tell their story, the only one who gets to still doesn't know what happens after a certain point after the introduction of the simulation, because they were the one who caused most of the activity in their species' recent history to kickstart.

    • @WackoMcGoose
      @WackoMcGoose หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've always pondered whether or not it was the Ghost Matter that did them in. The Owlks were technically contemporaries of the Hearthian Nomai (Prisoner was the reason Escall's Vessel even got the Eye signal to begin with, and the blocker being reactivated is why they could no longer hear the Eye right after warping), so all that the Hearthian Nomai were doing, going through at least a full generation or two before the ATP was complete, the Sun Station failed, and the Interloper arrived, that was _concurrent with_ the Owlk Tantrum and eventual retreat into the simulation forever. We don't see any Owlk skeletons outside the virtualization rooms (not that I recall, anyway), so all of them were clearly in there, _maybe_ some had already died of old age, but I don't think it could have been _all_ of them when the Interloper popped...

    I think the prisoner built his house on the other side of the rock not because he waned privacy but because he wanted darkness; The lights from the town would've interfered with his observations.
    Also the memorial room could be for people who died before the simulation or while creating it. There are no graves to be seen, only the images, so it could be their loved ones that never made it into the symulation.

    Thanks for the videos, watched those 3 plus the 9 or so Outer Wilds ones today. Definite Outerwilds Day for us. Few points: 0) Why were the Owlks so aggressive to the player in the dream world? They either blew out our lantern (could have killed us for all they knew) or broke our spines. Why did they not receive us with interest/curiosity, and instead with hate? I am assuming because of their over the top paranoia and fear 1) Did you see the "true" ending after you release the Prisoner and effectively beat the game again? 2) The way they totally hosed the prisoner and locked him in virtual reality for... I think a few hundred thousand years? or whatever, didn't gel in my mind. Why would they go so overboard? 3) From my previous point, the majority of the DLC I had this feeling that the slide-makers were a secret faction of sorts, which is why they went so crazy hiding the prisoner, and also hiding and changing their peoples history. They almost seemed like a digital reality worshipping cult, who were trying to effectively cancel the normal "Owlks" who didn't want to live in that digital "prison". Just my own personal idea, I agree with your interpretation as well. 4) As for those 2 buildings, they almost seemed like security buildings. The Owlks come out of them (which is how I found the underground tunnel leading to the big building with music and fire) and patrol the area it seems. This kind of makes me think those Owlks were security, trying to keep the non-cultists out. Something like that. 5) Overall I thought the DLC was pretty good. I was a bit upset we didn't really have to use the signal scope for anything, and that we never run into any Owlks in the waking world, or even their bodies/clothes, like we did in the base game. Some elements seemed pretty gamey to me, rather than lore-based, which you brought up for a brief moment. I wish the "true" credits rolled after we beat the prisoner.. him just standing next to us at the end and nothing happening was painfully anticlimactic and frustrating, even with the slide of us rafting into the supernova... some credits right after that would have felt very complete and I felt just a slightly bit robbed in a way. Anyways I beat the thing in 2 days, couldn't put the game down, so that says something by itself I think.

      I suppose you mean my outer wilds explained videos? I have over 100 videos dedicated to outer wilds lol. But The owlks react to us so poorly the same reason they hide in their simulation. They are terrified of reality. We have the power to find their story. And by extension maybe find the eye or chat with the prisoner. All things they don’t want. They also locked the prisoner away in fears they would help someone find the eye. Ao freeing them, even after 200k years could be dangerous if someone shows up. And those buildings are heavily protected. But only because they lead to the hidden libraries. I’m not so sure the reel makers were a hidden faction either. They literally have entire buildings dedicated to them right in the open. And entire libraries constructed. With that said I do think some of the reels are from a separate faction and hidden purposefully. And not from us but other owlks. But it’s hard to say for sure.

      @@TheLoreExplorer Yup we watched the explained videos because I beat it over a year ago and wanted to remind myself what was generally going on :) I think perhaps I just imagined the hidden faction, or came up with that notion first, because the first place I discovered was the reservoir and I did everything kind of backwards from that... don't ask me why lol. But that secret faction type of story seemed pretty interesting to me, especially because their "headquarters" seemed to be in the Hidden Gorge and all, and gave just a bit more oomph to the general story, rather than they just become mind warped with fear.. though over a long enough time period I am sure living in a homesick / digital reality addiction-type deal would have all kinds of weird outcomes that we got to see, and the prisoner was sort of a scapegoat at the time which tipped the scales. I didn't look into it too much but my wife pointed out that the eyes on some of the owlks seem to be different, with some having black eyes and others having clear white pupils - I wonder if this was only in reference to their anger/fright or is something to do with the timeline and the changes they went through? Just more speculation.

They did do something that may directly result in the owlks fears coming true.(if that is indeed how the eye works and they didnt misinterpret the vision) But as I said. Im not so sure youre imagining a hidden faction. There are things in the game that dont seem to vibe with the idea that all owlks wanted to keep the prisoner locked up forever. If they wanted to do that they probably wouldnt have hidden reels around the real world hinting towards stuff. And the prisoner wouldnt know where their codes are in the real world for sure.

We only ever saw ONE owlk use a telescope on the reels… is the prisoner the one who first saw the eye’s signal and since he discovered it he wanted to make sure that other species discovered it too so he stopped the signal blocker?! I dont think so. There is only one unique Owlk in that scene. And its actually a young Owlk. If I had to pick one in that scene who I think would be the prisoner Id say its the young one. Rather , I think the telescope is only seen with the prisoner because it reminds everyone of the eye. And they want to erase those memories. But the prisoner wants to keep them. The Owlks received a vision from the eye basically showing them whats going to happen. And while the other Owlks didnt want that to happen. The prisoner realized that it was completely necessary and they have no right to stop the universal cycle just so they can live a bit longer in the sim. The prisoner wanted the eye free enough to risk their life. Not so "someone can find what they discovered". But because the prisoner realized what was really happening here.

      @@TheLoreExplorer ah right! It’s just me overthinking it then.
      I have a few interesting questions though.
      1. Why does the dam break? Surely they would know that having such a large body of water in the stranger which could drown them and put out their artifact’s fire is a risk?
      2. If an owlk entered the dream world next to a green campfire and then you moved the owlk to another area on the stranger, would he still be in the dream world. In other words, is an owlks artifact linked to the specific campfire he entered the simulation at?
      3. Why did the owlk let out a scream when you finish showing him your memories through the projection staff? Was it a sad scream due to the realisation that the owlks have died or like that he pretty much caused the nomai species to die

    • @TheLoreExplorer
      @TheLoreExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1,) The dam breaks for a few reasons. It doesnt seem the Owlks had a timeline for what would happen. They knew about the heat death of the universe. But its basically impossible to tell when thatll happen. And the result is 280+ thousand years of total neglect and no maintenance on the dam. At the same time. The stranger begins to move for the first time in 280k+ years at about 7 or so minutes into the loop. This extra pressure on the neglected structure proved too much for the structure to withstand. Tbh I dont blame the Owlks for this. Im sure they would never expect their landmark structure within the stranger to fail. Itd have been smart to build all the fires above water level. But I dont see how theyd have reasonably predicted that.
      2.)Id say they disconnect and die. Each Owlk in the sim is connected to a specific location in the sim related to the green fire they connected to. Beneath the green fire are wires coming from the computer hosting the sim. The wires are feeding info to the fire. And the campfire light sends out the simulations information. The artifact, in turn , scans the user , connects to the base fire , and relays the users information to the green fire/sims computer. (Such as who they are, what they are thinking/doing.) The big tower with 4 antlers on the roof roof serves as a wireless hub for all these towers allowing them to communicate with each other. And so they can visit any area in the sim just as we can. But the Owlks in the real world room are connected to the base green fire with the artifact. Which is reliant on being within the light of the green base fire. So as soon as we move them out of the light they would disconnect from the sim and be sent back to their body. Which is now dead. And so theyd disappear from the sim once they leave the light. And theyd have no way to renter the sim. You can actually watch them disconnect in game and beam up in the simulations cool green code light. I have it in a cool sights and glitches compilation if youre interested in seeing it!
      3.) Its a complex scream of many emotions. The prisoner has been through a lot. They cared about one thing for the last 280k+ years. Even more considering they started worshipping the eye before they left their home system. A system which they loved dearly. And then sacrificed to reach the eye. And not only that. Over this long period of time the prisoner has watched everyone theyve ever loved change drastically and even turn on them. And essentially this sacrifice of their home moon was made pointless by silencing the eye as well. The prisoner sacrificed everything they loved. They watched everyone they love slowly go insane and turn on them. And they even risked their safety by trying to release the eyes signal. All to try to make it possible for the eye , the object they worshipped (quite literally) , to be found.
      And what do we show them in our vision? The very signal they lost EVERYTHING to free just for a few seconds. The signal which they spent 280k+ years in solitary confinement for releasing. The signal that made them destroy their home moon. The signal that made his loved ones turn insane. But indeed , for the brief moment they freed it , it WAS heard. And not only heard. Followed. And not only followed. WE are currently trying to find the eye. This very signal from the eye is what inspired US to become an astronaut to begin with. (signified by the symbol of the eye feldspar finds in the vision)
      So in this moment I cant even really imagine what the prisoner is feeling. The object they worshipped was only able to be found through their very actions. Their sacrifices. They essentially lived this long for this sole reason. To see if their actions were worth it. So they basically probably immediately made the decision to finally end their suffering by extinguishing their artifact after so long of bearing this weight. So I imagine the scream is part relief. Part vindication for being right. But also probably sadness and deep pain at being reminded of their history. Being touched by our story. And happiness we are trying to find the eye. Theyd probably be rejoicing in the fact the universe probably wont end due to their species. Cant imagine what thatd feel like. But one thing we know for sure. They were grateful we told them. So yeah. A complex scream for sure. Unimaginable really.
      Damn. Even writing that up after so long still makes me almost tear up. Such impactful and raw emotion depicted with no words. Honestly, great question Tom! Hope this helps!

      @@TheLoreExplorer I do appreciate your videos very much. I also appreciate how long you took writing this reply on a comments thread on a random one of your videos. I admire people who play this game. You give the game 22 minutes of your time and it rewards you for believing in it and being intrigued by its story that it hooks you in. This game is solely about knowledge and linking clues. I know a lot of people who couldn’t get into this game because of that as it doesn’t tell you where to go.
      It is the first game (and only game) where the music alone made me cry. The ending of us sitting around the campfire saying goodbye to everyone whilst each one plays their own instrument to the same melody. It’s beautiful. It also made me interested in space! - even though it is fiction - the physics of this game are quite realistic! I actually have learnt to play the guitar and banjo as this game sparked my interest in learning those instruments early last year. I’m also just starting out as a nurse and this games music by Andrew Prahlow reminds me everyday on the bus that the unkown is scary but it’s also worth the risk of exploring it.
      I only bought the dlc last week as I wanted to come back into it and it was on a discount sale. I can not describe to you how much a dlc can affect you. This was so depressing to finish as I know there won’t be anymore outer wilds after this as it’s story is too good at the moment for it to continue.
      I learnt from this game that even in your lowest moments, If your lost or feel isolated and have no one to talk to about how low you currently feel; music will heal you and connect you to other people. Gaming connects you to other people miles and miles and miles a part

    • @TheLoreExplorer

      Very well said bud. And thank you for the kind words! Its so amazing how much Outer Wilds has inspired you to better yourself! I can say the same. But not really to your extent! Learning instruments! Thats amazing! This was one of the first games where I was playing and I legit stopped just to listen to the music. And still the only OST Ive bought!(I even bought the vinyl!).
      Its also amazing that youre just starting out as a nurse! I have a cousin in the field and I know how draining that can be. Mentally and physically. Its a great thing to do. But be sure to remember that youre right. Youre hearthian friends arent too far. A quick post on the reddit(which is an amazing community!) or even my youtube will likely spark a conversation. I try to respond to as many as I can to help people understand the game because it is kind of really important in some peoples life!
      Its also cool to see how many people learn different lessons from the game. As if its real life and teaching us all lessons we didnt know we needed to learn. Except the fun and easy way since we didnt have to learn irl. The unknown is indeed scary. But for every lit pathway. There was someone who explored it while it was dark. And left a candle to let you know there is nothing to be afraid of. And if there is. We will face it and identify why its scary so we can come better prepared the next day.(or loop) Because someone has to.
      And while Outer Wilds may be over. I wouldnt count the series as a whole out yet. Outer Wilds is what the hearthians called their solar system. Itd make little sense if the next iteration would be called the same thing! Of course it wont be the exact same experience. But there is still hope the series may live on yet!

    Its implied they made the simulation after fearing the eye, i wonder why then they coded in an eye shrine thingy then burned it. They couldve not added it in the first place or delete it. Hmm.
    Its also surprising most of them didnt... you know... blow out their own fires eventually... perhaps they naturally have long lifespans, which would make it easier to bear 200k years in the same environment...

      There isnt an eye shrine in the sim. The only thing related to the eye in the sim is where the prisoner used to live. And thats just one symbol. Not really a shrine or temple or anything

    • @Throckmorpheus
      @Throckmorpheus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I mean the little stick things could be an artistic choice, but also from their models the strangers seem to have two opposable thumbs which would make that way of drawing a hand in general kinda odd, so I'd lean in the direction of it being a representation of something mythological. Like maybe when they were designing the teleportation thing for the simulation it reminded them of some element of their mythology and so they based the symbol for it on that since it was already an icon that was culturally known so it made the teleport points more intuitive?

But sort of like how earths gravity keeps its atmosphere even though we are in the vacuum of space. The vacuum would also have to combat the effects of the stranger. Which it may not be able to.
