I thought the most famous one is Yuki Onna? it ofen appear in game, in anime, in novel and some time in film.
oh wait Yuki Onna is Yokai not Yurei O.O wait, if Yuki-onna are to be blamed for these frozen deaths, is she Yurei or Yokai? hm.... maybe yokai? i still remember her from Yokai Academy of Rosario + Vampire.
But.. But the best known story about her was the one written by Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) in Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. Kwaidan features a series of ghost stories from Japan, which in theory are translations from original Japanese texts. According to the author, the Yuki-Onna story was told to him by a farmer in the Musashi Province, not surprisingly the region where the action takes place.
In other stories, Yuki-Onna is not a yokai, but a yurei (a ghost). Such is the case of the tale referred in Ancient Tales and Folk-lore of Japan, by Richard Gordon Smith (1918).
Also, it is important not to confuse Yuki-Onna with Tsurara-Onna, a name which can be loosely translated as “icicle woman”. In some of the Japanese stories about Tsurara-Onna, a man is looking at the icicles that hangs under the eaves, thinking how beautiful they are. Then, a woman appears. They get in love and marry soon afterwards. From this point, there are different variations of this tale, but the general idea is that the woman is made of ice and, at some point, it melts or turns back into it. In one version, the woman is cooking in the kitchen, near the fire, and when the man comes, he only finds a wet kimono in the floor. Another possible ending is for her to take a warm bath, with similar consequences. In another story, the Tsurara-Onna disappears with the coming of spring. The man remarries quickly, but the next winter the woman returns. She becomes so angry that she turns herself into an icicle and stabs the man to death.
Yuki-Onna arises as a complex and an ambiguous character. so is she a Yurei? is She a Yokai ? but Tsurara-Onna is obviously a Yokai 100%

      Yuki Onna's a famous one, too :)

I would personally say that "The Ring" ghost is less based on this story and more on "Bancho Sarayashiki", where a servant girl named Okiku is sought by a samurai. When she rejected him, he hid one of the ten heirloom plates and accused Okiku of stealing it. When she plead innocence, the samurai gave her an ultimatum: marry him or she'd be killed for stealing the plate. She chose death, so the samurai dropped her into a well to drown.
It's said that at night, Okiku will climb from the well in desperation to find the missing plate, and you can hear her counting the plates, but when she gets to nine plates, she screams. Anyone who hears her scream dies.

You had better go to purification at once. It's been said to haunt people and places.(tatari)
The story is one of Japan three great scary stories. Probably the most famous Japan ghost story of all time.
It is made based on the case which existed in the Edo period. It was a kabuki and a play, but every time, an injured person or a sick man goes out. So, before they perform, report it to "Oiwa Inari" and have them do the ritual in Shinto

However, as a work, the Tokaido Yotsuya ghost story is a spin-off work of the kanatehon‐Chushingura.
The true setting of Yotsuya ghost Story Mr. Rock is a daughter of the left gate of the retainer of Shioya Hangan (Asano Takumi head). Iemon is the son of a-Shiotani ronin. Oiwa is a daughter of the left gate of the retainer of Shioya Hangan (Asano Takumi ). Iemon is the bridegroomson of a-Shiotani ronin
However, Iemon will abandon Oiwa and marry a young girl. The young girl was a subordinate of Kouno moronao (Kira Kouzukenosuke), the granddaughter of Kibei Ito.
In other words, it's twice as heavy.

      purification is oharai
The Shinto purification; exorcism. In Buddhism it call “hold a memorial service for the dead“.(kuyo)
Other words, to exorcise a person or place of evil spirits.
or To cleanse a person's soul. Even now, some people in some regions enshrine Yumiya as an amulet, exorcism or barrier at the entrance or on the roof. In Japan, every house is in the new year.
In Japan, a New Year festoon made of sacred straw
      You don't know?
Have you ever seen a ninja chanting a spell?
That is passed down from the Heian period esoteric Buddhism, the negative way, Shinto, etc. That is to abandon worldly ideas, unify the spirit, work to make the most of the senses, attract and deflect the attention of the enemy.

In case you didn't know, Yotsuya Kaidan was Japan's equivalent to Shakespeare's Macbeth, complete with a curse (if you believe in such things). It is said that the play was based on a true - life event & those who wanted to perform the play had to ask permission from Oiwa at her gravestone. Failure to do so or to perform the necessary rites properly will result in tragedy. It is said that over the years several actors met with bad accidents & 1 director even committed suicide, the same fates would occur when movies came into being. Some people even are wary of telling the tale.
