In mediaeval Europe the leather tanneries used human urine for tanning and softening leather. Poor people sold their pee to tanneries, every family had a special pot for the goods if they could afford it - that's where the sayings "piss-poor" or "they don't have a pot to piss in" comes from

I wanna know, why was Japan so eager to impress the West so much. Every video mentioning Japan's transition into the Meiji Era and WW2 has the words: "To impress Western countries/To avoid embarassing themselves in front of the West/To not look barbaric in front of the West/To copy the West."? In my eyes, Chinese culture looks more eloquent compared to the west. So why does Japan even now act like beta c*ck suckers when faced with Western powers? Like you said in the video, Europe was 10000x less Hygienic before technological advancement. So why did the Europeans suddenly act like their s**t don't stink? I'm sorry but Japan's worship of Europe really p**ses me off and this is coming. Maybe my views are biased in this regard due to my African heritage, who knows. I just need to understand this mindset. Even now in the context of pop culture, I hear that Japanese people where fine with Scarlett Johansson portraying Major Kusanagi. I also saw this worship of Westernness in an anime called Jujutsu Kaisen where the main character said that he is into girls with large b-tts like Jennifer Lawrence. I'm here scratching my head because the whole big b-tt thing is mostly associated with African women and celebrities.

@@kenshix7902 Because they had their asses kicked in Meiji and "worshipped" the West for its technology and modernization. The whole concept of "enriching the nation" (so we can kick the Westerner's asses later on in WW2) propelled the initial pro-Western movement. As for the pop culture part, the occupation of Japan after WW2 definitely posed a huge influence on their interest with the West, and America is the main export of culture in today's world, and Japan is its main "victim".

Yeah, in the meantime in London, there was the "great stink" of 1858. After a prolonged hot\dry summer, the River Thames lost several feet of water, exposing walls of pure compacted butt nuggets that had been building up for literal millennia. As it dried, the stench became so bad that life anywhere in the city became unbearable. The Government - who had started hanging ammonia-soaked sheets in their windows, which didn't even help - actually considered abandoning London as the capitol entirely, before eventually agreeing to build a huge new sewer system.

Yea Edo Japan was the most prosperous time for Japan before modern Japan, so on top of the culture of washing that was already a thing before the Edo period, the economic and political stability and prosperity of the Edo/Tokugawa period made the hygiene situation even better for Japan. On the other hand, for neighboring Korea there was also a strong culture of washing for a very long time, but starting in the 1600s the country went into a general decline due to the war with Japan, rebellions, famine and what not. Due to this, many people became poor and the country in general went through a lot in the late 1500s and most of the 1600s. So good hygiene became less common. @@charlotteyu2145 Yes and eating livestock meat is considered a disgrace act in the higher class in Heian Japan. Only eggs, shellfish and fish (both freshwater and saltwater) are acceptable non-vegetarian food for Heian nobilities. Their diet is considered very unhealthy from a modern prespective, with so little meat/protein and way too much pickled vegetables and fine rice, causing their life expectancy to be only around 30. Remember the beriberi disease (linfamy made a video about it)? A number of Heian royalties, both men and women, were killed by it.
Btw Heian commoners doesn't care about the no meat diet code, and they tend to live longer than the nobilities. This diet code started to fade in the Edo period, following the rise of the samurai class.

Btw's btw: Although China brought Buddhist influence to Japan, it never had such a thing as no meat culture, though livestock meat was still limited in the higher class until 20th century. As a native Chinese, I think it's because China have way much territory and way much fertile farmlands than Japan does. These two cultures are kind of similar but also different and both charming in their own ways (I personally like kimono more than hanfu)

Our city zoo (Louisville Zoo in Louisville, KY) collects their animals' poop and sells it in the gift shop -well, outside the gift shop - in bags of sanitized manure. It is called zoopoopiedoo, and it is very popular as to be bought up as soon as it makes it to the gift shop. People love it for their gardens.
Another thing available is a composting toilet with which some people compost their poop with Red Wiggler annelid composting worms. The worms and poop are well away from your hind end.
The glory of vermicomposting is that the worms sanitize the poop and turn it into excellent fertilizer: black gold! It has a lot of nutrients, but also lots of plant - usable nitrogen. And nitrogen is what plants vie for! So a mixture of poop and pee would seem to be ideal for these hero worms!
