I read about this some time ago. I never knew Hinduism had influence on shintoism. XD Daikokuten - Lord Shiva (God of destruction) Benzaiten - Saraswathi ( Godess og Knowledge) Bishamoten - Kubera ( god of wealth, war )
Japanese religion is actually a great amalgamation of different traditions that came from west with Buddhism and cultural influences from China. I appreciate that Japanese were open to new religious ideas and were able to incorporate them into their culture.
I had read that daikokuten was the japanese version vajrapani, said to have been a deva that swore to protect the Buddha from all harm and ended up achieving enlightenment.
Something I will say, the reason why Ebisu is popular is not just the fact that he represents fisherman and that fish are a favorite in Japan, but it is also because he is said to be the wealthiest of the gods and merchants believed that he would bring them more money
😂😂😂😂 I don’t think I have ever heard a much more amusing description of them as you gave. I had to watch it twice and the second time was as magical as the first. Thanks for sharing Lin. Good fortune and health to you.
Around twenty years ago, I was lucky to have a great teacher at school who once showed us his lucky charm -- a Hotei figurine. He told us that he'd got it as a present. He'd been told to rub Hotei's belly to improve his financial circumstances. Sadly, it didn't reflect on his salary (either the rubbing needed to be more thorough, as he claimed, or one should be a true Buddhist for it to work properly, and he was brought up in the USSR -- not the most Buddhist-friendly society in history).
Daikokuten can actually be traced back to lord Mahakala the fierce form of Shiva master of time and wisdom and Bishamonten can actually be traced back to Kubera the master of wealth so we can say that these two Hindu gods might have changed roles in the Japanese canon, Benzaiten however can be traced back to sarasvati who plays a string instrument much like Benzaiten however although most of her Japanese attributes fit the Hindu one in Hinduism she is often shown with swans and peacocks and not snakes and dragons, however another esoteric Hindu goddess matangi might be a bit closer to Benzaiten.
I thought that looked like Mahakala. Interesting thing about Mahakala is that first he was considered to be a fierce aspect of Shiva, but then Buddhism co-opted him to be a dharmapala (fierce protector of the Dharma) Benzaiten is probably Sarasvati because they’re both associated with wisdom and the arts. Also, a stupa is a reliquary mound. Buddhist teachings might be inside, but usually, they’re for objects that belonged to, or body parts of, varrious buddhas It’s usually seen as a sign of devotion for people to complete a number of walks around a stupa. Also, there is a series called “Hometown Rebuilding: Folktales from Japan” that I’ve recently started watching. One legend tells how Benzaiten became the Goddess of the Bathroom. Basically, the Seven Lucky Gods held a meeting to decide which areas of the house to protect, but Benzaiten was late...and when she got there, the only spot left was the bathroon.
What's with love goddesses having feathered cloaks? Nordic Freya has one and Sumerian goddess Inanna (Akkadian Ishtar) is often depicted having wings on her back, which is uncommon for Mesopotamian deities of 3rd and 2nd millennium BCE.

@@shivamthapa7303 That's right and as everything else it begins in Sumer where god Ninurta fights demon or maybe dragon Asag. Hotei is my favorite of the lucky gods. He tends to be shown sitting cross-legged, either surrounded by children or simply sitting there, as well as standing upright holding a gold pot over his head. There are many versions of this guy and he is admired in Cuban culture, especially those who have Chinese bloodlines. ^_^ I'm not familiar with the other Seven Lucky Gods so I thank you for posting this. My mom has a collection of white marble colored figurines of these Gods and it was nice to know what each one represents.
@@Linfamy Back in the 1800s there was a transfer of Chinese train railroad builders from United States during the Cuban Independence War , aka Spanish American War. These rail road workers brought with them their culture, naturally. Even some took up arms to fight for the Cubans, and some suggested that they fought along side with Jose Marti, which is highly possible, since many Chinese migrant workers, along with blacks and Mexicans, took to hiding in the Oriente or mountains of the island, such as Santiago and Guantanamo (ironically enough after the liberation of Cuba in 1901, 60 years later these would be where the Cuban Communist Revolution would start as well). I don't know if there were still an Asian population by then fighting along side Castro and Che Guevara. Fascinating how History connects everyone together in one form or another.
My favorite God or more specifically goddess has got to be Benzaiten. Believe it or not in particular game you get the chance to battle and, if your lucky, befriended them. I actually befriended a couple of them, but Benzaiten was among the first ones I got. She has help me through many ruff battles by K.O an emeny in one fell swoop when there H.P got low(This is extremely helpful if the enemy is too tough and your team doesnt have enough energy to stall for time, so it helps to have her). Rock on Benzaiten, Rock on
The pilgrimage stamp card are the same as the Vietnamese ones but they’re kinda different it’s like a gambling game to play to have good luck during the new year
My favorite game on the PS Vita is Muramasa Rebirth. They added a DLC pack called Genroku Legends. It was 4 chapters and each chapter you played as a different protagonist that represented different japanese folktales and yokai. Okoi, a vicious Nekomata out for the blood of those that wronged her family. Gonbe, a humble farmer and his story of rebellion against the shogunate. Arashimaru, a cursed shinobi that seeks redemption. Rajyaki, the youngest daughter of Lord Enma of the underworld and her earthly exploits. The theme tying the episodes together is the 7 lucky gods. The gods have displaced their magical items and they appear in each chapter of the DLC. My wish is that Muramasa Rebirth and Genroku Legends get a port to the PS4 or PC so more people can play this awesome action game and it would be a site to see it running in 4K.
I've seen statues and prints of these guys in Chinese restaurants and wondered what they were. It's not hard to recognize Fukurokuju so I'm pretty sure it's the same group. I always assumed they were part of Chinese culture. Thanks for the information.
Hikohohodemi no Mikoto was the paternal grandfather of Jimmu. Also, upon seeing this week's video, somehow my brain read that as the 8 drunken gods from Drunken Master. Still, I am not disappointed.

I was gonna ask how many cookies and milk i need for them but i realise No matter how manny cookies and milk you prepare for all 7 gods hotei is just gonna eat them all
For your info The hindu gods you mention were Benzaiten -( Godess Saraswati) - goddess of art and wisdom Daikokuten - (Lord Shiva)(As mahakal)- the fearsome form of Shiva Lord kubera (Bishamonten) - God of wealth and prosperity he is also a "Lokpal" means guardian of the direction.
We Indians worship Daikokuten and Benzaiten in the name of Lord Shiva and Lord Saraswathi , it seem there's a lot of similarities between Shinto and Hinduism..
Ehhhhh the ninjas from Wano in one-piece hahaha i already knew the reference when i read the chapters but it's dope to hear lindaddy go into the history :)
I used to have an entity who appeared to me in dreams named Cyaphrim (Kai-uh-frim). He took the appearance of a Baku, and parts his name phonetically sound like types of christian angels.
I think Bishamonten was the first one that I heard about the 7 Lucky Gods due Samurai Warriors since Uesugi Kenshin was a worshiper of Bishamonten if I recall correctly. I also find bit strange on how only Bishamonten went to Japan's myth but not his brothers/partners in his original group. Which I only learn about it thanks to Shin Megami Tensei ;P
You know these gods were probably the basis for the Seven Deities from the Capcom game Asura’s Wrath. In case you don’t know, the 8 guardian generals, Asura, Yasha, Wyzen, Augus, Kalrow, Sergei, Olga and Deus, protected this great kingdom of demigods called Shinkoku, and fought these evil creatures called the Gohma. Asura was betrayed by the others, and the seven of them basically spent the next 12,500 years exterminating humans that gave them their devotion and prayers so they could grow their power and defeat this evil being called Vlitra at the planet’s core. They couldn’t do it without their prayers which they converted into their power called Mantra, so they decided to betray and scapegoat Asura, take his daughter who could help them focus their power, and enact an era of genocide and servitude upon the planet for all that time, and Asura had to stop them after returning from the underworld.
"I pick nits with a nit pick, It's quite efficient, but hardly quick, So satisfying, like baboons, Who pick nits on hot afternoons. No one I know scruples much, To keep from scratching nit bit butts, Get a mirror check each hair, And you'll find some fat nits there." Geeze. That felt good.
It's common that time of combining some belief to their own. Which came from the Silk Road period. 7 lucky God of Japan are the prove from that combination. The Chinese lucky God had 3 (Blessing, Prosperity & Longevity) and the one had big forehead are known as The Star of South Pole that brings Longevity. There's many more when there's temple from them 3. Other then the Chinese beliefs in the 8 immortal, that might as same as the Japanese. Just loving myth and old beliefs, almost around the world.
In The Movie, Pom Poko, you are probably familiar with the yokai parade scene (Hyaki Yagyo). During this scene you will see 7 golden people on top of a building and tossing out gold to the people below. If you pause the movie at this part, they are the 7 lucky gods! Also, I was wondering, in this same scene, who was the big man who was bowing on top of the buildings and then turned into a cat? Is it Bakeneko?
Now i know who that dude is who is hanginging out by the tree in the yard, my dad would always rub his belly for luck never told me why low and behold it is Hotei

EBISU !!!!!
Ebisu is my favorite out of the 7 gods of fortune I find him to be the most interesting
I didn't know they are a part of Cuban culture as well!
I knew I heard Ebisu from somewhere and when I heard "Bishamon" I finally remembered XD
Wasn't it in anime Noragami?

My favorite God or more specifically goddess has got to be Benzaiten. Believe it or not in particular game you get the chance to battle and, if your lucky, befriended them. I actually befriended a couple of them, but Benzaiten was among the first ones I got. She has help me through many ruff battles by K.O an emeny in one fell swoop when there H.P got low(This is extremely helpful if the enemy is too tough and your team doesnt have enough energy to stall for time, so it helps to have her). Rock on Benzaiten, Rock on
I was gonna say that, I agree with you
At chess game or everything else, here's true wisdom of ages:

Nobody's born cool
Except of course
People who watch before commenting.
Ps 福禄寿 was 3 people in China.
Whos that ?

These guys are pretty cool, my favorites are Hotei and Bishamonten! The latter sounds badass! Though I thought Susanoo was defender of Japan...
The pilgrimage stamp card are the same as the Vietnamese ones but they’re kinda different it’s like a gambling game to play to have good luck during the new year
Fish zoom meeting, great idea! Dont want those fish to catch Covid.
Emperor Jimmu's Grand father was Hoori.
My previous knoledge of the 7 Gods of Fortune came from Norogami
When he brought up the longevity god i just thought of LLLLLOONG LLLOONGG MMMMAAAAANN😆
Hoori (Hikohohodemi no Mikoto)
I love your channel!
I've seen statues and prints of these guys in Chinese restaurants and wondered what they were. It's not hard to recognize Fukurokuju so I'm pretty sure it's the same group. I always assumed they were part of Chinese culture. Thanks for the information.
You might be thinking about the Eight Immortals.
Hikohohodemi no Mikoto was the paternal grandfather of Jimmu.
Also, upon seeing this week's video, somehow my brain read that as the 8 drunken gods from Drunken Master. Still, I am not disappointed.
Can you do the tale of genji next? Also love your videos... ❤
Apparently where I'm from Santas don't seems to popular ....but they can't stop me to like the Japanese ones!! Thanks for the video. Keep on uploading!
Nothing can stop you!
@@Linfamy no they can't! Wahahah
Japan is the world master at creating rituals to boost tourism
Not many people know this but they can combine into a god called "Zerofuku"
8:26 I read that she actually got married to a snake king in order to stop him from killing and eating the nearby villagers
I was gonna ask how many cookies and milk i need for them but i realise
No matter how manny cookies and milk you prepare for all 7 gods hotei is just gonna eat them all
This is true 😁
Ōwatatsumi god of the sea, and on his father's side, he was a direct descendant of Amaterasu, goddess of the sun.
For your info
The hindu gods you mention were
Benzaiten -( Godess Saraswati) - goddess of art and wisdom
Daikokuten - (Lord Shiva)(As mahakal)- the fearsome form of Shiva
Lord kubera (Bishamonten) - God of wealth and prosperity he is also a "Lokpal" means guardian of the direction.
We Indians worship Daikokuten and Benzaiten in the name of Lord Shiva and Lord Saraswathi , it seem there's a lot of similarities between Shinto and Hinduism..
I agree with you.
We can see similarities in Vedas and their mythologies....
As far as i am concerned..
The thought of 7 Santa Clauses is truly terrifying
😅
9:30 he must have been taken a nap back in 1853 when uncle Perry paid a visit.
7 Santa Clauses coming to town? I mean...there are literally thousands of “Santas” going to town during SantaCon yearly. 🤷♂️
Jimmu's grandpa was Hoori!
And also 7 SANTA CLAUS FOR THE WIN!
Ehhhhh the ninjas from Wano in one-piece hahaha i already knew the reference when i read the chapters but it's dope to hear lindaddy go into the history :)

I lost myself at sausage fest 🤣🤣🤣
LOVE UR VIDS BTW KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5:45 He'd get on well with Dionysus
When you want to say first, but linfamy did it first. :(

I used to have an entity who appeared to me in dreams named Cyaphrim (Kai-uh-frim). He took the appearance of a Baku, and parts his name phonetically sound like types of christian angels.
🎶🎵Seven Santa is coming to town ~~🎵🎶
Me who read Noragami:
Don't ever use the word smart with me
I think Bishamonten was the first one that I heard about the 7 Lucky Gods due Samurai Warriors since Uesugi Kenshin was a worshiper of Bishamonten if I recall correctly.
I also find bit strange on how only Bishamonten went to Japan's myth but not his brothers/partners in his original group. Which I only learn about it thanks to Shin Megami Tensei ;P
Im having Noragami Vibes rn😂
Aww man I wanted a video about ancient adult toys 🤣 everything is better when you tell it
Apparently other people want it too 😅
Is no one going to talk about the FFVII menu sound being used for these seven gods? Nope? Just me linking the two?
last time I was this early, I could go out

I always confuse Daikoku with Ebisu. Maybe because the main Ebisu shrine in Osaka is near Daikokucho.
What? No electrodes? Linfamy! How . . . how could you? "Pika, pika, pika pi TURN UP THE JUICE!"
"I pick nits with a nit pick,
It's quite efficient, but hardly quick,
So satisfying, like baboons,
Who pick nits on hot afternoons.
No one I know scruples much,
To keep from scratching nit bit butts,
Get a mirror check each hair,
And you'll find some fat nits there."
Geeze. That felt good.
I don't get it 😅
@@Linfamy I was nitpicking in the comments section.
Merry Christmas
Is it Bakeneko?
what a good video
what a good comment
Now i know who that dude is who is hanginging out by the tree in the yard, my dad would always rub his belly for luck never told me why low and behold it is Hotei
