Episode 98
The Uninvited is one of the most well made Point and Click Adventure games for the NES! It's the third and final Macventure game that Kemco would convert to the NES. It was actually the second game in the Macventure series, but this one is better late than never!
This time the NES version does a great job of capturing everything from the original Macintosh release. They didn't have to cut out the grisly death animations, and they look awesome on the NES! They only thing that really got removed was one very secret room...
So how did this game get made? In today's video we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:

There is a secret you've missed. If you punch Ace Harding's grave and then talk to the zombie that emerges, he tells you he was once a famous detective who wants to be left alone.

Curiosity: Is it possible to blast him with the Pendant instead of leave him alone? :P
@JoshuaGanoTyraxLightning From what I've done, yes. I remember blasting the Ace Harding zombie with the pendant many years ago when I played this game. Just don't use it on the group of zombies clustered together in the maze, or they'll kill you.

Also definitely on that Tip. I get the impression that firing the Pendant is a Single Target Attack, so a Character like that which is played in that game that can't take hits thus would NOT be able to afford to get attacked would do well to not try to screw around with enemy numbers without a good enough AoE Attack to hit'em with. ;)
It's really neat how you have the PC AND NES versions side by side and how you describe the differences between the two in this episode, I never played this game, but certainly had the NES back in the day so it was interesting to follow along.

Check out deja vu and shadowgate. He played the computer versions of those as well, i laughed so hard at a particular point in the story of deja vu that you'd never get if you didn't play the computer version. Totally awesome watch!

Meh, it's an Emergency Survival Situation, so it's okay. Also Cops can't get ya if ya don't survive that situation first to start with.
If I recall correctly, the Cloudisi Spell has one use in the game, and that it allows you to slip past the Southern Belle to head back to either the living room or the upstairs room if you accidentally summoned her before you obtained No Ghost.
"Dogs, why did it have to be dogs" is a mis-quote from Raiders of the Lost Ark... pretty cool reference
Oh yeah... forgot to think of that... never thought to try pondering if 'Dogs' was subbed out for 'Snakes'.
This moved pretty fast into my top 5/3 weekly video game channels. Pretty rare I enjoy watching someone else play stuff.
And so the Macdventure trilogy is complete. Another wonderful episode of UCAN BEAT VIDEOGAMES. Your channel never ceases to amaze us and let's us relive our childhood memories of playing these wonderful games.
I also never played this game as a youth, by 91' I also had moved onto 16bit Tech. - I want to get my hands on it. (ROM) cause these original hard hounds are not fun to deal with! Thanks for this video team!

Thank you so much UCBVG for covering Uninvited, Shadowgate, and Deja Vu. Growing up our family owned these wonderful games on NES. My sister, father, and I would brainstorm and try to solve all the puzzles together, and eventually did it without outside help even though it took us a long time. Your videos bring back a lot of warm memories.

Aw man, you're lucky your family played with you! My prents bought my sister and me a NES with a power pad for the purpose of it being a family system, but nobody ended up playing it but me, and it ended up in my bedroom with a wooden zenith tv. I was fine with that at the time, but looking back, it would have been cool to have family memories playing good ol' 'tendo like you did!
@@gwicks I do feel lucky! It was rare for us to play as a family but there was something about the point and click adventures they loved. Thanks for sharing, I also had a wooden TV lol.
This had a lot of extra and humorous ways to die in the PC version, my favorite being punching any window and trying to go through it which results in your scraping yourself over the broken glass for some reason. You could also get an alternate death message in the finale by murdering your sibling with the axe (pretty sure the knife worked too). Serves them right for going into an obviously haunted house.
Drinking the lab chemicals (plus breaking them and touching the chemicals) had two different deaths that I think were only on the PC. Ignoring Dracan in the PC has an alternate death message (and the pushed death message occurs if you waste two turns and then try to throw him into the pit). The PC also had a time limit death similar to the ruby.
Nice video, stumbled across your channel with Shadowgate and enjoying the nostalgia from a bunch of NES games. There's a fellow who's made some fan games in this style called Infested and Spectacle if you enjoy these point-and-click games.
I may be just some random passersby, but Infested and Spectacle videos sound like an awesome idea

Yes - It definitely adds a lot of extra work, but this time I was ready for it, so it only added about 1 day of extra work. Totally worth it!

I'm so happy you did this game. I always felt like this MacVenture got the least amount of love, but I adore the tone of it.

Well the good news is that Kemco did the last Macventure on Gameboy Color, and there are a few more related games I'll probably cover in the future...

Can I point out an easter egg it seems you missed?
If you punch the tombstones for the characters from the other Macventure games, zombies appear. But you can talk to them and hear them say things about their games.
Yeah, I was just about mention this Easter egg. I still can't find any videos on it.
I really loved this game as a kid. My Mom raised me on 80's horror flicks and the Uninvited was probably one of the most scary NES games I've ever seen. The first time I encountered the woman in the hall I had nightmares for weeks.
I really hope some day we see a remake of this game, like we did with Shadowgate.

One other death I discovered not long ago while playing this is that if after melting the ice and freeing Dracan, if you wait for long enough after arriving in the room with the pit, he will revive and then throw you into the pit.

I commented on how I would've loved this for Halloween and UCBVG delivered. My sons (8 and 4) have added "but what if I told you..." to their vocabulary and it cracks me up every time.
Also, I was glad to hear his take on the Jacob Marley ghost. I also was completely stumped on him as a kid and just wrote him off eventually.

The best way to get past the dogs at the church is the hidden spell KYLOMANCE. It changes them into dogs of great gaming prowess and causes them to make detailed strategy videos on old video games.

Never got to play this as a kid, but discovering it via emulation was a treat, since I love point and click games. I've always wanted someone to try and make an 8 bit 7th guest lol
I usually boot up an emulator and what ever game he does right after i watch. Makes for an awesome saturday!

These games creeped me out so much as a kid, I couldn't even play them. I love these deep dives. I always wondered how anyone could ever figure out all the puzzles in these games without a guide 🤔 This video also cracked me up all the way through 😄 Great video! Thank you!
I always open containers such as the envelope and boxes and just take what's inside (if useful) rather than taking the containers themselves, this helps with inventory clutter.
my wife who is blind really likes how descriptive you are, she was able to listen to this with me the whole way through.
Me and my brothers figured out Shadowgate and DejaVu ourselves back then. This game stumped us though. Great work!

If there's one thing I appreciate about your coverage of the MacVenture trilogy, it's that you include video of the Mac version alongside its NES counterpart. You've got a level of commitment to detail and thoroughness that is a credit to the field of video walkthroughs. Of the three Uninvited was the first I ever played, and indeed, it was the first point-and-click adventure game I ever played, so I was super excited to see you tackle this.
I was going to say I wasn't a huge fan of point-and-click adventures, but then I got to thinking about the point-and-click adventures I actually enjoy. There's the three Macventures, the two Discworld point-and-clicks (Discworld and Discworld Noir), the Kyrandia series, Toonstruck, the Space Quest series, the King's Quest series, the Police Quest series, the Sam & Max series (especially the pre-Telltale stuff), Loom, Zork Nemesis and Inquisitor, Grim Fandango, Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle. There's kind of a lot more than I initially thought and I feel like there's a few titles missing from that list.

K, I know I’ve commented a lot, but I gotta do it once more. Dude you definitely say some funny shit between the lines. Like when you finally got rid of the ruby and said “you drop the Ruby over the edge of the Titanic” but it was so passive it almost goes unnoticed if a person isn’t listening. I so very much enjoy watching your playthrus. Thank you, man. I feel like I’m hanging out with an old friend when I watch your videos.
I know others have said it, but having both versions of the game is so cool! I never knew all the little differences between the versions
First NintendoComplete uploads his playthrough of this game just yesterday, and now U Can Beat Video Games gets in on the action! This is the only one of the point-and-click Kemco games that I remember playing back in the day. It was a pretty fun adventure, full of memorable little moments like the skeleton lady and the giant spider. The deaths are great, making for a decently creepy game.
I wonder if thats the same channel that ( to my surprise) took down there 7th saga playthrough after i pointed out it was actually some sort of mod

It is such a wonderful level of effort and completeness to include the original and NES versions room by room. Sad to hear this will be the last point-and-click adaptation. Loved the De ja vue and Shadowgate episodes!

I like how your sister is basically at the beginning of the game but you have to go through it all to throw a dude down a pit and get a cross/goblet lol.
Heck yeah. Uninvited is a great, bizarre game. All these point-and-click NES titles were, but this one is probably my favorite.

I am suffering with heavy depression, I am the most miserable I have ever been in all my years being alive, it's hard to get away from myself and my thoughts, that being said I appreciate your videos, growing up with these games were some of my fondest memories, to get stuck into one of these videos and forget what I'm feeling and going through for an hour or two means something to me, so thank you for your channel and all your hard work👍 I am sure I am not the only one who appreciates it

Hang in there. Depression is no small thing. Make sure you’re talking to someone and seeking out the things that make you happy. There’s light out there.
Well, I myself have dealt with depression before, but letting go of unfulfilled needs and wants, along with being thankful to God and everyone else for what I do have, helped me come back to light again. Hope this small piece of advice helps.

Great playthough! As a few others have mentioned though you did miss a rather good easter egg. You can punch the tombstones of Ace Harding and Talimar to summon zombies which you can talk to! Has some fun dialog and you can talisman them!

If you punch Ace Harding's tombstone, his zombie will appear and you can talk to him. He says something like "I just want to be left alone" and then you can use the pendent on him.

I love the Kemco/Seika NES games. I remember having my Mom buy Deja Vu at Fred Meyer for me when I was a kid. I still remember everything about that game especially the music.
this is the one game I never got to play on the nes. I didn't even know it was different with the new items and secret room. I did Deja Vu and Deja Vu 2 gameboy color with Shadowgate for NES and N64.

Also about the spider at 45:50 when You enter the room it tells You that it is very clean, so at the moment I thought that the ghost was afraid of dirt and since spider webs are commonly asociated with it, I thought the spider was the answer. Of course that`s a really stretched answer.
Apparently the servant was killed by a spider. I think I saw it in the japanese version of Uninvited(Akuma no shoutaijou)
I had to go play the NES and Macintosh versions before watching your video because I wanted to muddle my way through on my own. Once I finished, I came back to watch this video. This is probably one of your best. I love the side-by-side comparison with the two versions, and I like your little head canon of needing to loot the mansion to recoup the loss of your car. Great way to showcase all the items while also being really funny. Well done!
I saw Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom I the background, I hope you do that eventually. It always kicked my butt as a kid but it was one of the very few (think 6 or 7) that the closest store (gas station) had to rent and my little sister loved watching me try to play it. I NEED to see you beat that game.

I remember picking this up used I think from K-Mart back in the day. Loved the atmosphere and aesthetic. Had a difficult time completing it because I didn't figure out that holding the ruby in your inventory caused the curse to kill you every time.
You tease me with that Tombs & Treasure cartridge..! Would love to see you go through that one.

I remember renting this back when it was brand new in '91 as a child from Blockbuster Video, and I just could not get through it. So I actually sent a letter to the company for a strategy guide, saying I didn't have any money, but I really wanted to beat it. So they mailed me one for free, and I was absolutely ecstatic! One of the most positive memories from my childhood for sure. A fun game. Ask your parents about Macventure games, they were great.

Out of every game you've played on this channel, I must say I think my favourite is "Can We Drink It?"
So here are two questions.
What happens if you put the Ruby to the Magistrium?
What happens if you take the ruby just before the last fight?
It seems like the Ruby is set on a time limit. So what happens if you finish the game with the ruby?
You need the Blothney Gem for the Magistrium; the ruby does nothing. You can't take the ruby with you to the final battle. The ruby initiates a timer and you character is likely to be killed while hunting for the Blothney Gem let alone the boss fight at the end. It serves no other purpose other than messing with first-time players who go in blind.

Wonderful to see one of the best looking Macventures for the NES (Music, Atmosphere, The deaths, etc). It has been an amazing trip watching you play these.
On a side note will you attempt to do the fourth Macventure game: Deja Vu 2 Lost in Las Vegas? Due to Kemco canceling the NES port of it they would rework it for the Gameboy Color in the Deja Vu: The Cases of Ace Harding collection.
I think of the 3 games like this uninvited is my favorite. Good job!
