- The Arendal Sound 1723 Tower is an imposing loudspeaker with an array of four 8" woofers and a tweeter nested in a large metal waveguide. It is THX Ultra certified and looks it. In our review, we take a deep dive into Arendal's flagship speaker to see what is involved to design a tower speaker that achieves THX Ultra certification. James Larson and Gene DellaSala discuss the design details and measurements of these Norwegian beauties and how they stack up to the competiton.

Thanks for the review. I bought the 1723S towers after seeing your review of those towers. I then upgraded to the 1723 towers and I’m very happy with their sound, including their soundstage, dynamics and smooth sound. I can attest to the build quality and the weight. I love the grills with kids around. Best grills I’ve seen. I Have in black satin. They look like the monoliths from 2001: A Space Odyssey and they don’t reflect light and show fingerprints like gloss. I bi-wire them but didn’t really notice an audible difference but I had the Audioquest cables, so I use them. I did end up adding a pair of SVS SB1000 Pro subs because I’m a bass head and it did add to the low end. Their customer service is excellent. I highly recommend. Thanks James for going above and beyond for the review. Rock on!
Why did you upgrade from the 1723 S. Do you run them without a subwoofer? Thanks in advance.
I wanted to hear the top of the line. I ran them for a long time without subs and they sounded great but I now have 2 subs. It sounds better with the subs IMO. What doesn’t. I’ve added a sub or subs to every system I have that I can. I’m always tinkering with my setups. It’s a fun part of the musical journey.
I bought my 1723 speakers last year, for my dedicated home theatre, replacing some paradigm towers and centre. The whole buying experience was fantastic, with several prompt emails from Arendal, answering my questions and offering advice. They also advised me to get in before the forthcoming price rise. Shipping to Australia was seamless and, despite a small hole in one box, the speakers were spotless. Now, many months later, I'm still blown away by their sound, together with my two SVS subs. They are brilliant with music and movies alike. I doubt anything else can get anywhere near these for the price. Great review by the way!
Their subs are actually good as well. Not worse than SVS
Own these speakers for two channel. Powered by a by a Wyred 4 Sound stereo amp and Parasound preamp all connected to my laptop in a home office setting. My macbook is feeding all the source material. The sound is fantastic! 100% beyond as advertised. Highly recommended!
BTW - can't wait for the 1528 reveal!
I have had these speakers for almost 5 years now and I really like them a lot. I power them with NAD C658A and Rotel RB-1572 and that is a great combo. Almost three years ago a added two SVS PC-4000 so I X-over the speakers at 80hz since the NAD doesn't have a really advanced bass management system and this gave the best quality bass in my living room.
Amazing review! I have the 1723 THX towers for my LR, along with the 1723 THX center, and 1723 S rears + heights. It's truly a great speaker line and you guys nailed the review. I'm currently running it all sealed to better integrate with my sb16 Ultras but will definitely open the ports now.
I have my arendals 1723thx, and upgraded from klipsch rp280 and wow 😮😮 speaker sounds better and effortless at 400watts per ch amp i bought with them(d-sonic) class D amps...they are worth every penny glad i got them at 1900 each and got email alert of price increase, but i recommend these hands down, great video guys
I'm continuously impressed with my Arendal speakers. I have the 1723S as part of a two channel system. They couple nicely with my room acoustics and my gear: VPI, SME, Ortofon, VTL, McCormack . I'd argue they represent tremendous value, even with the price increase.
So many great reviews for the Arendal 1723 Towers. I am a fan of SVS but I am not convinced that their new towers are better than the Arendal 1723s. The Arendals would also be a little less expensive for me. My only concern is that I own an SVS Ultra center. I will be able to listen to the SVS Ultra Evolutions series this month.
Svs *might* look cooler 😎
@@TD05SSLegacySVS Towers has the cool factor but SVS hasn’t convinced me on their new towers.
@@happydogg312The Arendals 1723 towers have had many positive feedback on how they sound for music and home theater. I also like how they measure. They are a neutral responding speaker and that helps when playing sub par digital content.
I have the SVS ultra center paired with the 1723s. And the SVS blends really well. No complaints.
@@zeshane100 I'm surprised to read that. I have the SVS Ultra center and voices are not as clear as with my JBL HDI 3600's...noticeable in some movies.
I’m waiting for the Arendal 1528s. I hope 🤞 I’m not the only one ☝️ excited for something even better than these bad boys!!
Me to.. I'm selling everything 😂😂
Now that you have reviewed the Arendal THX towers and the SVS Ultra Evolution Pinnacles, which of two would you prefer best and why? If either of them would be the last speaker you ever bought, which would be your choice?
I've been on the fence between these two speakers. What I derived is that if bass is the only thing I would gain with the Pinnacles, then I might do better if I added, say like a JL E110 to the THX towers.
@@melvinberrian153 I was actually in the room at the FL audio expo when the Audiohaulics team was in there.
The new SVS flagship towers are absolutely awesome. Truly. To my ear though, the Arendals are a better rounded speaker. The bass is more “controlled” or better integrated with the midrange. I feel like the SVS could be bloated if you are not careful. I listened to them in a small room though so take that with a grain of salt.
As for mids and highs, imo there is just an edge more of intelligibility to the Arendals. Mind you I’m splitting hairs here.
Either way good luck deciding.
For the money I would say the Arendals are the better buy, but I highly doubt that either tower will disappoint.
@mendiesel7932 I actually ordered the 1723 THX towers. I did hear the Pinnacles. I wasn't 100% sold on them. Couldn't quite put my hand on it, but I found myself blaming the room for what ever was wrong. Unfortunately, I don't have an opportunity to audition the Arendals. Guess I'm taking a leap of faith by trusting others opinions .
@@melvinberrian153 worst case, return them.
I will definitely tell you that they open up after break in. So give time before you judge them critically.
I doubt they will be disappointing.
What a great time for folks looking for speakers in this price bracket!
There is some incredible performance available from the 8 speakers you listed, each having some different areas of strengths and weaknesses. Some time spent doing your homework should show you whats best for you. I have a smallish room so went with the smaller JBL HDI 3600's a couple years back, but with 4 of them in the corners, a 4500 center, 4 SVS Prime Elevations, plus 2 SVS SB2000 subs I have about all the speaker power this little room will handle. Playback of BluRay Atmos Music recordings is as close to SOTA music reproduction as I'll ever get in this tiny 12 x 18 space.
Thanks guys for making us aware of what is out there today, it's awesome.
Yes, the 1723 Towers are not only awesome, but they are a value play. I bought them last November before the price increase. Arendal just announced another price increase. I'm driving them with a Bottlehead Moreplay preamp and a First Watt F4 clone, both of which I built. I'm probably driving 30 watts per channel into that 4 ohm load.....enough power to raise the ceiling in my 12' x 26' listening space. I prefer the 1723s to my Focal 1023Be towers and my Tannoy Turnburys, both of which cost more than twice what I paid for the 1723s. Arendal has also announced a new speaker line, the 1528, which will be a higher priced, even bigger speaker. If you need a pair of towers, I don't know of anything that comes close for the price.
What is "Focal 1023be"? Didn't hear about those 😮
I bought these just before the FL Audio show and as great as the new SVS are, I wouldn’t trade them for these.
i know the builder in ceiling surround system is not ideal. However, I have them. What would be a great way to make my situation better? get left right center speakers and use ceiling as atmos? 5.1.4? angle the ceilng speakers so it can reach the listeners? video on this would be amazing!
Got these along with the surrounds and center. I just love them!! Just added 2 HSU VTF 15H MK2 subs right as they were discontinued. Perfect match! 👌🏽
Movies or music, you can’t go wrong.
Do you guys have any inside info on the upcoming Arendal 1528 Series? I am super-curious about them!
Even if Gene did know, he would not be allowed to say anything due a NDA, standard protocol,
What does the arendals crossover look like? Air core inductors and poly caps or solid core inductors and electrolytic caps? I am seriously considering these and if they really have quality build then they should have a crossover with quality parts. These or the new SVS towers?
Ughhh email just now
Effective August 15th, we will adjust prices for our 1723 Series speakers and
subwoofers by up to 12% depending on currency and models.
Wait, we announced the new 1528 speakers and 1723 sales came to a screeching halt! Let’s create some Fomo to get sales back up!
Would you still buy the Arendal 1723 thx towers if they cost $6,000.00 USD? What speakers would out perform them for that amount?
I have the Klipsch RF7 III. I always felt that there might be better options in a similar price range, I thought they would blow my mind but they didn't (I had a pair of JBL previously). Do you think this Arendals would be a significant improvement ?
What are you using to power them?

Great review James! Thanks Gene and Audioholics for sending Hugo to help James lift those up and down!
My question is: what am I giving up with the 1723s vs the Perlisten R7ts? Seriously. I'm certain the R7t has smoother FR and outputs a little cleaner but in a normal listening/living room where music and movies are 50% and TV watching is the other 50%, am I making a bigger compromise than roughly $6K (MSRP.) I'm curious with dealer incentives, is the R7t a "no brainer" over the 1723s or is it splitting hairs? I can get a pair of white R7t for about $7500. OR do I get the 1723 + a sub and live happy ever after?
p.s. James, as someone who had spine fusion and is staring 50 in the face, DO NOT be ashamed of not wanting to lift such things! I'm with ya man! NO judgement here! Gene, shame on you.... 🤣😂🤣(But thanks! #guiltypleasure....)
Perlisten is certainly a step above. Better directivity control, much more neutral response, even better build quality, and a more sophisticated design overall. If you can get the R7ts for not much more than the 1723 Towers, you should do so. I say this as a big fan of the 1723 Towers. The MSRP of the Perlisten towers is much higher for good reason. We have a review of the R7ts, you might want to check it out if you haven't already.

@@jameslarson2277 id be interested in arendals next big thing when it comes out. probably not a long wait
@@jameslarson2277 I read that one and nearly bought some from Matt after your outstanding review! But, I bought more drums and need to keep saving them pennies! Being an "Audioholic" AND musician is HARD on wallets and 401Ks!
@jameslarson2277 I believe the that the 1528 series might meet or even surpass the sound of the Perlisten R7T's or even higher end speakers. Even though Arendal will offer a great value I think it will be at a price point well above that of the 1723 THX. It just would not make sense for them to be close.
Hi guys, thanks for the great video, I have the 1723 monitors using them for with a subwoofer for home theater, the guys At Arendal recommended I plug both ports to let my subwoofer handle the low bass. I do use arc room correction. Should I unplug any ports?
Depending on the crossover frequency to the sub, it probably doesn't matter if the ports are plugged or sealed. The bandwidth should be so heavily filtered that ports shuoldn't be producing much sound anyway. However, if you are using an abnormally low crossover frequency, like below 80Hz, its probably a good idea to have the ports sealed.
Excellent speaker, wow. This might be my next pruchase.
U should wait, new model is coming out, a big brother😊
@@chriss881000 oh really? Bigger than this? Oh I don't know. Is there a center channel or matching bookshelves of these?
@@hdmoviesourcei got a email from them, not personal but "what is coming" thing. They dont say much, but the info its gonna release in december it says. The mail just says "bigger" more expensive and premium than 1723 tower. Im rly looking forward to see whats coming out. Been wondering for some time now to sell my hdi 3800 to buy 1723, but now i def habe to wait;)
@@hdmoviesource I have the 1723, they are excellent. Yes, the 1723 have bookshelf and centre channel. The new model 1528 will be a new range at a much higher price point. I don't think it's meant to replace 1723.
I bought the 1723 Towers a year and a half ago and liked them so much, I bought the 1723 Tower S for the surrounds. Some would say that's overkill just for surround speakers but those people are fools. Biamping the fronts because why not. Put all of them on 1" thick travertine plinths, and put those on top of those rubber/cork absorbtion pads. I feel like that's all the isolation you need, even for hardwood floors. I use an Integra DRX-8.4 AVR and its powerful enough that I don't feel a need for separate amps. The whole system sounds fantastic, and amazes everyone who comes over to hear it. Arendal has tremendous bang for the buck.
The tweeters in the 1723 monitor thx begin to drop off ,presumably due to overheating, after running a few compression tests in one of the reviews here on TH-cam. Do these use the same tweeters as the monitors and do they exhibit the same behaviour ?
I never heard of this being a problem in any of James Larson's tests for any Arendal products. The big advantage of these speakers is high dynamic range.
@@Audioholics if you have a look at Jonathan VonEngeln review from about 7 months ago, he’s tests showed the tweeters dropping off after repeated compression runs in REW which were below THX spl levels. The results were repeatable. Maybe both of the speakers were defective but what are the odds of that
@MrBonger88 it's possible the test signal tripped a resettable PTC. Continuous signals do not represent actual program material, and that's not how THX does certification testing.
@@AudioholicsPossibly yes. for what it’s worth Arendal was able to recreate the compression but they didn’t specify at what spl. I think his example started at around 10-12 kHz at 95 dB sweep. If you watch the visualization the first sweep at 95 dB is ok, it’s not until the second sweep that it drops off
@MrBonger88 yep definitely a PTC at play and likely a good measure to reduce field failure. I haven't heard a single owner complain that Arendals sound compressed at high SPL.
Comparing the scorecards of these and the SVS evo pinnacles, it looks pretty close. I wish SVS had satin finishes, but their higher score on treble smoothness and their comparable imaging score (without having to toe them in extremely, which looks odd in a living room to me), keeps them ahead of the Arendals on my list. Does that sound reasonable? I’m trying to decide which to buy. Sure wish I could A/B them! James seems to prefer the Arendals.
They are both good speakers. The SVS speakers have a bit more bass in their response, but that is easy to EQ if you prefer a more neutral presentation. I would give a slight edge to the Arendals IF you use a time-intensity trading type positioning for high precision imaging (few people would want their speakers angled like this) and also their higher build quality. However, I could totally understand someone who might lean toward the SVS speakers.
@@jameslarson2277thanks for the response! That was helpful.
@jameslarson2277 super nice that you react to these comments james!!! 🎉 thanks. I own the 1723s towers based on your review and LOVE THEM. What a great speaker!!!
They have raised their prices 2 times in less than a year! That alone in crazy. I think originally they was $2995 originally and now with this price increase they said between 10% and 12% on top of the 10% the 12% they done just in November will bring the price up to almost 25% in less than a year. How is anybody happy about that. To top it off these speakers are at the end of their life cycle and they're still raising the price. Might sound like I'm complaining and I kind of am but you guys have to understand these price increases are too much.
I got them last summer when they were $3699 a pair. Glad I did. But with that said, these speakers are worth the increase and they are still much cheaper than the New SVS Evolutions.
How would these arendals compare with the svs ultra evolution pinnacle ?
I have the SVSs since a week ago, but it's hard to make up my mind
@user-fd6yp8gl1h If you like the SVS, keep them. If you want to compare, Arendal offers a 60 day risk free trial period.
Someone needs to bring out an outrigger kit for the SVS Ultra's to make Gene happy. ;)

Are larger speakers always higher sensitivity? If so, explain the physics ❤
Within the same brwnd and series, usually, yes, because you have more drivers.
@@Audioholics Thanks! Then why are all the big Klipsch speakers (I call them ‘church speakers’ 🥰) highly sensitive? Engineering choice or physical necessity?
@@TD05SSLegacy typically Klipsch uses horns (or a tweeter inside a horn) which are very efficient in terms of output (high efficiency correlates with high sensitivity).
That being said many Klipsch are not as sensitive as their official specifications suggest because Klipsch has been blending in room gain (rather than using an anechoic measurement like most other manufacturers and all good testers) which gooses their official numbers a bit.

I can just barely squat the 1723 Tower S up from the floor. I tried the 1723 Tower and there was just no way. Now the doc says I need a backiotomy.
I had to carry these up the stairs of my loft apartment by myself. It wasn't enjoyable but definitely worthwhile.
Hasn’t this review been done already?
1723S tower and 1723 Monitor were done prior.
a bass driver apparantly may have feedback to the tweeter/midrange through the crossover and power amp. so one of the supposed sonical advantages with bi amping, is isolating bass drivers from higher freq drivers. you wouldn`t accomplish this with the solution you are proposing 6:15
I agree with your comments on biamping, but it's not useless. You could power the tweeter with a low power tube amp for some extra sweetness if you're into that type of thing. Also, I would totally run these sealed for 2 channel music, and perhaps boost the bass a little with EQ, because I like my bass as tight as a gnat's ass for fast punk and metal.
Then just get the 1723 Monitors and 2 sealed subs rather than killing the dynamic range of the bass in such a large tower.
@@Audioholics Well I already thought about that, a lot. The problem with those monster monitors is that they will require monstrous stands or tables to get the tweeters near ear level. None of the stands I see for sale look wide enough to prevent them from toppling. What to do? Custom stands? Custom sub enclosures? No matter how I game it out, it always ends up costing a lot more than the towers, which are already at the limit of my budget.
@@Cowplunk Not to mention the towers are just so much better looking.
Time to start pushing weight! Gotta have the muscle to push those speakers around! Just start benching these monsters!!
Y'all are supposed to be HELPFUL... (lol) I'm trying to decide between these and the Philharmonic BMR tower.
😂
Both are so good. I would say if you want a wider dispersion type presentation and intend to high-pass the speakers from subs, get the Philharmonics. The Philharmonics will have a wider soundstage, but the Arendals can have a more precise soundstage. The Philharmonics will have a more balanced tonality over a wider listening area and are generally more accurate. The Arendals can have a balanced tonality, but you have to position them correctly for that. The Arendals have deeper bass and more headroom in bass frequencies. The Arenda's also have superior build quality.

I've had a pair of NHT 2.5's when they first appeared. NHT isn't the same company it once was, but few companies are after decades.
I'm a something of a freak of nature, my hearing tests full range in my mid 60's.
Zebra wood VS a build that would survive a traffic accident.
Decisions, decisions.
I got the white ones.
Me parecen unos altavoces espectaculares, buena construcción y a un precio bastante bueno. Estoy dudando entre;
ARENDAL 1723
JBL HDI 3800
WHAFERDALE ELYSIAN 4.
Take him to the gym with you.😅
We live top far apart, unfortunately.
It’s like, and right.
Price increase to follow has been my experience.
