    Death by water is always a shocking thing to hear. Jacqueline Henson, a 40 year old from Huddersfield here in the UK died after drinking two two-litre bottles of water in under two hours whilst trying to lose weight in 2008.

      @@Samara.Weaving Yes, temporarily, as a quart of water is equivalent to two pounds of weight, so your body weight on a scale can fluctuate by 2-4 pounds throughout the day, as water levels change. However, drinking water increases your metabolism by 25% for an hour after, so drinking more water throughout the day and keeping your metabolism high will help you burn more fat content in the long run.

    Kinda the same thing happened to me a few years ago. I had a severe lack of salt in my body after working in a uniform during a heat wave. I drank too much water overall, and far too much giving the lack of sodium in the system. It was horrible, I’ve never felt like that in my life. Endless thirst, headache and a disturbing sense of unreality and strange thoughts, I had to force myself to stay focused on my surroundings. The doctor told me to eat as much salt as I could, and to not drink a drop of water for 24 hours. I had about 5 liters of too much water in my body at the time. Please, don’t forget to eat extra salt during warm weather! If pure salt on your tounge tastes good, your body wants it. If it tastes bad, it’s enough.
    Edit: Thank you so much for all the kind, heartwarming and interesting replies! :)

      Sorry you went though that

    • @Vendemiair
      @Vendemiair ปีที่แล้ว +69

      This is the reason why dehydration is best remedied not with plain water but with fluids that have electrolytes, particularly sodium (e.g. Gatorade, Pocari Sweat, oral rehydration solutions, etc.). What happened is that you had dilutional hyponatremia (whatever sodium in your body was diluted by the excess free water), exacerbated by sodium loss from sweating. Headache and changes in behavior and sensorium (wakefulness) happens because hyponatremia leads to cerebral edema, i.e. swelling of the brain. In severe cases, people die from this brain swelling.

    As someone who had to spend a full week at the hospital due to water intoxication I can confirm that it’s definitely not a joke. It dilutes your electrolytes specifically your sodium levels and it can screw with you mentally and somewhat physically. I was having anxiety attacks and I constantly felt tired, thirsty, confused, and dealt with serious muscle cramps. I was going to the ER so many times it was out of control. One day I called the nursing line for any suggestions telling them the symptoms I was experiencing and was told to go the hospital within 24 hours. At first I was reluctant but doubled down on the decision to go and called the ambulance to take me there. When I arrived they found my sodium level to be 111 which is considered severe. Your sodium level is supposed to be between 135-145 to be in the normal range. Had I not gone to the hospital to get my situation taken care of I wouldn’t be here telling you all about my experience. It’s been a year and I’m still alive and doing much better! Drinking water is good but don’t drink too little to dehydrate yourself and don’t drink too much to overhydrate yourself. Make sure you consume sports drinks to replenish your electrolytes. Never take your electrolytes for granted.

But I've been very ill and dehydrated the past few months, my doctors kept telling me I was dehydrated and needed to drink more water. I didn't understand how I could be dehydrated when I drink so much water, but now I am realizing that I probably have electrolyte imbalances. Usually I drink a lot of water and avoid sodium because I thought salt was totally unhealthy and drives up your BP. But now I'm thinking I must not be getting enough. I checked my medical records and my sodium was recorded as low, but no doctor ever discussed this with me. They don't give a damn lol💀

    The issue isn’t she drank too much water too fast, the issue is that she wasn’t used to it. Any avid gym goer could down 2 litres of water in 20 minutes. Because they’re active, and always consuming water. Preventing hydration instead of trying to cure it. This is actually a mass issue, I see far too many people not drinking ANY water and relying on soda / tea / coffee for hydration. We’ve come too far from our roots.

      Largest danger is extreme fluctuations. Like going from very dehydrated to drinking 2 liters at once.
