The poor antenna reception might be because you're running the TV on 800mA instead of the rated 3A. I would retest that on a proper adapter.

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 ปีที่แล้ว +12

That's what I was thinking as well, but he might also need an antenna amp with low noise to get a good signal in his location though.

Just use a 12V 1A adapter (those are plentiful) or a bench power supply. Measure the current at 12 V and if it doesn’t max out the adapter at full brightness & volume while decoding DTV (the highest load I can imagine), a higher-current-capable adapter will not help. You will gain reliability by underruning a PSU, though.

Considering how little is in the bezels, with some... "modifications", you could probably shrink the monitor down a lot.
That input delay I would classify as "excellent", about +0.5 frames from CRT -- you can even see a slight rolling bar during the flashing in the latency test if you go frame-by-frame, I suspect the main source of delay here is the LCD.
To solve the resolution issues with modern computers, maybe use Custom Resolution Utility? You might have to toy with the timings a little bit, a task made harder by the fact the Intel iGPU doesn't like keeping the resolutions after a driver restart until you restart the computer. I wonder if it would handle 480i through the VGA and how high the refresh rate could go.
If you want a closer RGBI image, try thinking like a monitor designer. R, G and B are dropped to around 0.8 volts, with I adding 0.3 volts to all. Getting Brown would be a bit trickier, though. Then again, the utility of this approach is dubious compared to the effort over buying a converter...

I use to have a top loading Coby DVD player about 20 years ago, and it was not too bad for being so cheap, and for keeping in the RV my family had at the time. Also that bit at the end about the SONY VHS deck was top notch 😅👍

@@christophermorin9036 LOL, and yeah I worked a 2nd part time job for Dollar General back in the mid 00's - every early 2010's for 5 1/2 years, we sold some Coby stuff, and when it worked well it was a decent value, but I also saw my fair share of returns from customers, so there QC was a bit hit, and miss depending on when it was made, and who they got to do the OEM work.
Also If I remember correctly I think the Coby DVD player gave us about 6, or 7 years of service life before the remote died, and we replaced it with an "Emerson" DVD/VHS combo unit that I still have in storage as a backup unit. Far as the old RV, I helped my mother sell it last year after my stepdad died back in late 2015, and it was mostly left sitting at it's storage site, and starting to rot away.

There's one obvious use case for the analog tuner: some older computers and video came consoles only have RF out, or may need modification to produce video over composite or via luma-chroma. This TV is great for testing such machines prior to modding them, or even just using them in their original RF glory.

Those Coby LCD TVs are actually decent, my roommate had one in college, they’re good for old video game consoles and watching antenna TV in certain places! The multiple inputs like coaxial, RCA, and even VGA makes it versatile for easy hookup!

Funny, I'm one of the people that doesn't mind large bezels. I consider them as large bumpers protecting the screen from impacts. If this thing WERE to fall off a table or shelf in your camper or whatever, the LCD would be fine.

I had a Coby tv given to me a couple years back as it was broken. It had roughly a 20" screen along with a built in DVD player, USB, and SD card slot not to bad for a tv from 2008. The tv needed all the capacitors changed in the power supply as all of them had failed. After that the tv worked fine again.

Still a neat little display despite the size and functional shortcomings.
A little off topic but speaking of the quality of digital antennas, I put one up l had for many years to see what how many channels it could pull in.
After scanning I could only get 13. I was rummaging around in my closet and found an old Radio Shack antenna signal booster I used when I had an analog antenna.
I hooked it up and did another scan and now I'm getting 87 channels! That booster is almost 40 years old and still works great. Great video as usual!👍🇺🇸

For a small lower end early flatscreen TV, it does what it was designed to do! Might not be the best, but sometimes you don’t need a super high end display. Great for testing equipment and convenient considering the size. Just because the design makes it seem strange, it doesn’t mean that it’s bad. Also, the matching Sony equipment is very cool, futuristic silver design from the 2000s!

In fact, the panel with a resolution of 800x480 is ideal for displaying analog NTSC, because in this case you do not need vertical scaling, and each analog line corresponds to each line of pixels of the panel. Another question is whether the scaler is actually set up this way, and watching the vertical cropping tells me what they did wrong, trying to match the cropping of the image as on a CRT TV

It's good that it supports 240p composite video from an old game console. Some LCD TVs either interpret it as 480i video or cannot display 240p video at all, leaving a blank display. The 240p signal is just a tweaked 480i signal on order to trick a CRT TV to display 240p. 240p isn't officially a part of the NTSC specification therefore LCD TVs support 480i more than 240p.

Not a bad TV for testing or playing vintage games consoles and computers. You're right - they did a 12" model too (TF-TV1212) with the same case but thinner bezels (not quite as thin as the badly photoshopped B&H image though). Quite a clever idea to reduce costs. Around the time where TV/DVD combi's were popular - so there's the TF-DVD1092 too.

I saw someone use a TV like this for a Raspberry Pi setup that they made in an old Macintosh. They emulated the original OS and made it look like a Mac, but it was just a cheap LCD driven by an older Pi. I guess if you wanted the vintage look, but not some of the hassles with older equipment, that would work.

I have a similar Coby, but the picture truly is terrible. Super washed out, viewing angles are ridiculously bad, doesn't get all too bright or loud. Which are all ridiculous limitations since it was sold as an RV TV.
Ours did at least tune in to channels reasonably well, and had both a DC barrel jack for running off RV 12V *AND* a standard IEC 120V plug with internal power supply for running off wall voltage without a brick needed. Ours also has HDMI in addition to VGA. It made a great upgrade from the old analog-only tube TV our old RV had.
Used it with a first-gen AppleTV in the RV before the RV upgrade. That AppleTV stored local copies of a ton of our movies. Sadly, it died after Apple stopped allowing iTunes-purchased-movies to sync, so I didn't bother replacing it.
Since upgrading our RV, I've been using it for vintage computer testing. It's a 1366x768 native display, so even 1280x720 is readable on it. (In fact, 1280x720 with video card overscan compensation works great so you get 1:1 pixel mapping on the visible viewing area; although that adds a little bit of "soft bezel" on top of the large physical bezel.)

I LOVED COBY electronics! I’d buy them just to see exactly what you were getting for the money. To my surprise, many of them performed well but had such poor quality control, that even dropping my COBY usb MP3 player onto a rug from a height of maybe 3 feet, rendered it useless. Same for a CD player that died after it slid off my sofa. I bought another one, and it still works very well except for a scratchy volume control. Any suggestions for that? I also have the surprisingly capable HD radio, the COBY HDR-700 designed by REVO. Yes, the small speaker sounds tinny, but it makes a great little HD receiver when used with an external speaker. I have another MP3 player from them, which I haven’t used in years, but it had incredibly good sound. More COBY products please!

7:50 The wonders of a video tape getting jammed, are something I'd love to forget.

You just used the wrong Sony VCR. That one was made by Samsung. You can tell because of the sound of the mechanism and the yucky 4-digit LED display that it has. How is your SLV-N81 doing & why didn't you use that instead of that Samsung piece of junk?

I could be wrong, but I don't believe the TV is actually receiving a progressive scan from the DVD player. When you enable p-scan on the DVD player, it's probably just for the component video output (the composite and S-Video continue to output interlaced video). At least, that's how my old Sony and Toshiba DVD players worked.

Your comment about the audio not switching between the VCR and the DVD player was disingenuous sine there is just one set of audio RCA jacks. I think a better test would be the RCA jacks vs the 3.5" audio jack when switching between composite (or S-video) and VGA.

Huge bezel! Nonetheless, it's a handy little bugger.

Blimey, this thing had a lower screen resolution than a PlayStation Vita, back from 2011.

I have a 13 inch version of this ... I use it when I am working on game consoles or computers at the bench, and yes the tuner sucks butt but its good enough as a side display for when im working on things (mine has component and HDMI but I bought it at a overstock store a decade or more ago for 60 bucks)

at least that one has an active matrix panel, and for the little screen on the bezel given the e-waste manufactured by Coby, thats a pretty decent one and the menu is kinda retrofuturistic
