Shane is a great example of striving for excellence and is a complete class act. Awesome human being.
Reminds me of Paul Mcbeth in Disc Golf. Class Act.
Indeed!
@@TH-cam_OG"Disc Golf"
Shane is one of everyone's favorite players and a class act. But to discuss America's best 9 ball players with no mention of Earl Strickland is prissy, PC censorship - but no surprise. SVB would agree.
He did date a 16yo when he was already well into his 30s tho, you can look that one up
As a pool fanatic, I’m so happy 60 Minutes took the time to do this story. Especially about my favorite pool player. Congrats, Shane!
Nope. Efren Reyes was the best in his prime. Definitely the most entertaining.
It's tough call, but Strickland , especially 9 ball, was top 3 ever and the best shot maker I've ever seen.@@frankiek2269
@@frankiek2269 Oh. I didn’t know you were the one in charge of my opinion.
Also, I said favorite. Not best. You must not have been that great in school.
@@murahk123 I never said I was in charge of you. I was enlightening you. Because your favorite is WRONG! Lol. I just figured you were new to the game and all you’ve seen so far was Shane. I was trying to open your eyes.
@@frankiek2269favorite and best are ≠. Efren is the goat but not everyone’s favorite is the best
Shane Van Boening is one of the great pool players that we really admire here in Philippines besides our very own Efren, Biado etc.
Bustamante
There are a lot of great players from Philippines.
AUSTRALIA is the Pioneer of Pool and invented pool. They should believe AUSTRALIA. Even the Americans and GOOGLE knows EFREN is the Number 1 Pool player in the WORLD
World Number 1 Pool Player? SAYS AUSTRALIA🤣🤣🤣
60 minutes is owned by Australia why would you believe his Tumbnail?
The sport needs more people like Shane.
Needs less people like him. Pool's personality is exactly like Shane, it needs a more marketable exciting personality.
As a Filipino who's a big fan of the game, I can say that SVB is an icon - a true champion indeed!
Still not better than Efren Bata Reyes....

Shane is the perfect ambassador for the sport. Great human being.
Good ambassador I agree. Pool just doesn't have any exciting personalities on the circuit. That's what it needs.
Never heard of Shane before watching this.
Great story
Great guy
Wish him all thr continued success in the world, he seems like a genuine class act human being👌🏼
Hell yeah congrats to Shane. He's been at this game his whole life. Glad to see him reaching pop visibility
I was beaming from ear to ear the entire time while reading this amazing narrative. I've started playing the game and watching it as a fan. Like you mentioned in the early portion of the section, the game is really challenging. I'm happy to see 60 Minutes featuring one of the game's finest players and, in my opinion, the world's greatest sport.
60 minutes with a pool documentary + SVB? Sign me up!! Love to play pool regularly and hope in my life time this becomes sport watched nationally!
love this guy. he’s humble and a great player
“The sign says, No smoking and No Gambling, and we sure didn’t see any smoking “. 😂
He’s an incredible player and I’ve met him many times he’s a really nice guy .
I'm 68 and recently started playing again after 34 years off. It is the most challenging game there is. Can't play like I did but I love it. Sure wish I had SVB's stroke it's pure perfection.
I played competively for about 30 years, and quit about 20 years ago. I've played a few games since quitting, and tbh, the love is still there, but I can't see anything. Those long shots the young me could see, are too far away now. Hilariously sad
@@ryzonbatistanot to sound ignorant but glasses are no help?

Was it JRB I saw in the video 2:00 2:01
Also, Shane seems to be the perfect "Pool star". An excellent player with a strong sense of moral who has had his hardships in life. You just got to love the gyt and wish him well.
I think so!
That is JRB lol
And that shot is in the books. Great episode, thanks for bringing Shane some spotlight time.
Really calm and contained guy just living his best life for pool
Love that shane got this special!
I've spoken with Shane briefly a couple of times and he's always been cordial, pleasant, and professional with the people around him.
This was much needed coverage for development of the sport, thank you 60min. Thanks to SVB for being a great role model as well. Class
Shane in an awesome guy. His passion for the game is something that always gives me a big smile. Really cool to see the sport and one of its greatest players in Shane get some spotlight!
SVB is possibly the best ambassador for the game of pool. As someone who enjoys pool more than the average player I still can’t seem to call it a “sport” I do hope one day that it can have more than an occult following and be recognized for what it truly is.
You'l mean the best right now right? Because Efren was and probably still is the best ambassador this game has ever seen
I'm kind of okay with pool being a little bit of a "niche" sport. I just don't want this awesome community of fans & players to be corrupted by big obnoxious greedy companies. On the other hand, it is such a shame that a sport as cool and fun as pool doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
@@harleck9119 people don't have the patience or intelligence for it
All I do is play pool when I'm not working. As a Valley National 8-Ball League player I agree with you.
Great story, didn’t know anything about Shane or his background. But I’ll follow him & the sport as it grows, hopefully to the point where it’ll be covered on national TV.
It used to be shown on ESPN but players would intentionally lose to win bets so they took it off air
@@johnDoe-ue2xrESPN could care less about that. Whatever brings in the ratings and pool does not bring in ratings

Poker,Golf and the media portraying pool as a seedy underground sport has ruined it's reputation
@@JimJones-kk8pb pool does have a seedy reputation, bars casinos alcohol drugs pills degenerates etc
Pool is global now with many great players worldwide. No other player from USA is in the top 30 anymore. Shane has consistently been among the top three players in the world for 15 years.
Did you check the Fargo Ratings top players list before making your comment, because I just checked it to confirm you're right, but only just, with Skyler Woodward at #31!
Really is an international sport now, which is great to see
@@billtube55 yeah I think Skyler recently moved up which is cool he seems like a good representative of the sport. Interesting thing to note is 9 of the top 30 are from the Philippines.
That's because most pool players are people who can't make it in snooker.
Great to see Shane as an ambassador for pool. I think match room is doing great bringing awareness to mainstream players. We need more televised game for sports channel as well.
This was a fantastic story and I was grinning ear to ear the entire time. I have taken up the game as a player and as a fan. Like you hit on in the first half of the segment, the game is extremely difficult. I'm glad to see 60 minutes covering one of the greatest players in the game and as far as I'm concerned, the greatest sport on the planet.
"NO GAMBLING" followed by a shot of Jean-Robert Bellande lmao
Wow!. I didn't know he was deaf what a great story!.. what a winner! 👍🎱
This is such a wonderful view of the story of pool and a gentle peek into the history of SVB. He's seriously a top guy and just loves to play pool. There's nothing flashy about him, and there doesn't need to be. He's calm, cool and collected, and the game of pool is a beautiful one. I hope it'll hit the mainstream soon ♥
The interviewer was using the svb cuetec. Absolutely GORGEOUS cue.
I thought I couldn’t be a fan of anyone else besides Efren Reyes but I have so much more respect for Shane Van Boening now. Seems like such an awesome dude
Both Shane and Efren are great ambassadors for the sport.
I've been watching Shane for years...very much enjoyed watching this
Have hunted in South Dakota and have great respect for the people who live there and now even greater respect for Shane
Thanks for posting this! I've been wanting to see it for a long time.
I can stream pool and billiard matches on my smart tv. There’s a billiards channel. I absolutely love it. 10 ball, 9 ball, straight pool, one pocket, bank pool, snooker, billiards, bar table pool. It’s great. I started playing pool by sneaking into the two table pool room in my small home town in the mid 60’s. I eventually got ok at the game. Not great, but ok enough for it for it to be enjoyable. Finally being able to watch the pros play on my tv is a real treat. I’m an old man now and my eyes and hands have seen better days but I still get to practice on the 9 foot table I eventually purchased from the man that owned the poolroom I use to sneak into.
Hearing Shane talk about being abused by the other kids made me tear up. People are the absolute worst.
oh stop. did you go to middle school?
@@eddiedettling9322 people threw rocks at you too?
@@KevinBrown-xo7jrmiddle school was ruthless I was a tough kid and got bullied myself
Shane was tearing up too when he recalled that incident.
I believe I ran into Shane at a Casino in Iowa this spring. Sometime in the evening after spending the day I was walking the floor and seen a face I recognized (from watching pool regularly on TH-cam) but didn't fully realize who it was until I saw his hearing aids as I walked by and blurted out Shane like an idiot, to my surprise he turned around. I found myself with no words and held my hand out for a hand shake and in return I got a smile and a shoulder shrug with two hands full of chips. No words exchanged but very memorable experience I much enjoy
He said that Shane has no interest in Gambling???? That's the funniest part of this video.
I think the funniest part is that she's going to make it a successful sport. I mean ... people look at pool and think they can do everything Shane or Efren can. They look at anyone who plays basketball and never get that delusion.
Just look: Literally EVERY comment is by a "pool player." We'd like her to succeed, but the chances are? I mean CAMEL, with only ONE METHOD to advertise cigarettes on TV still couldn't..? And yet, she's gonna do it on personality? Granted, Earl should've always been mic'd!! But to the uninitiated? Pool looks easy.
Omg this was great! Thank you for doing a story like this. I love pool. Shane is, indeed, one of the very best in the game.
Awesome to see this on 60 Minutes, been watching Shane since before he was a well known "star" and been enjoying the game for years! Hopefully things turn around one day!
Congrats Shane. You deserve it after all your hard work. I love your style and cue action. So natural.
Wow, news recognizing pool sports and stars. We need more of this. Thanks.
Great story. Thanks for making this ❤
I'm not particularly concerned with their personalities. That can be displayed in interviews, like this.
What I enjoy and admire is their dedication to the craft and the laser-like focus, skills, and the innumerable amount of hours they have spent honing their skills that we get to relax and watch the end results of such devotion.
I'm all in. (pun meticulously intended)
Awesome piece, 60 minutes! I’ve always loved pool, ever since I was a kid. I was finally able to get my first table, and with much difficulty, get it into my basement. Absolutely love it!
Wow! I can't believe my eyes - SVB getting the full spotlight. So good - can't think of a more deserving guy! Nobody works as hard as SVB at their craft.
Yup. But I don't trust 60m to do it on merit. I'm guessing the woman trying to make it popular (when if CAMEL, with only ONE METHOD to advertise cigarettes on TV still couldn't) is gonna do it on personality? Granted, Earl should've always been mic'd!!
But I'm guessing she got 60 min to do a slot on pool ... it deserves it, obviously. But I just don't feel inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.
LOVE THIS! The game of pool was my life for more than a minute. I'd LOVE to see it come back.
It's great to see a documentary about my favorite sport and sportsman. Would love to see more stories like this.
Amazing sport. I wish it could get as big as it deserves to be!
So happy to see Pool getting some representation. It’s tough to get a rather slow sport to grow when competing with other bigger and exciting sport but it’s a beautiful game. Glad to see Shane representing
chess boomed over the course of the pandemic, and is still riding high 3 years later. I think the right cast of characters, like Shane, and the right formats (speed chess or blitz chess is incredibly popular to watch and play online) like 9 ball instead of 8 ball is definitely the right path for pool.
The thing is, it's good, because it's slow. I love being able to think out the shots with the players, and then understanding just how big a shot is, all in-between when everyone thinks it's "slow"
There is still a major game going on. Problem solving and risk mitigation on top of trying to deceive your opponent into setting you up for a shot that he "thinks" you can't take. It's a wrestling match that's happening the whole time, and only high-level thinkers will find that fun.
Absolute titan in the game. Great interview
That was HAIRY one - nine combo. Represent Shane!
Brilliant segment, 60 minutes!
I've won a dozen or so Billards Tourneys in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. If I could turn off all noise while playing, I would damn sure do it. Every game.
Love this guy, my favorite pool player
This is awesome. Love pool, SVB is the best, heck yeah. The coverage is well deserved
This is awesome!! I really want to see professional pool get massive. I love pool and I can watch it for hours.
Love this interview. Wish more people knew about this dude. He’s an absolute legend in his sport and an intimidating dude to play against.
I have been shooting pool for over 40 years and yes.........There is always something new to learn in this under appreciated game.
Anyone else see JRB @ the 2 minute mark? He clearly enjoys all forms of high stakes gambling and I respect it.
Finally, a story that 60 minutes didn't lean towards the left. 😅
What a great ambassador of the sport.
Love this guy met him once in Vegas hopefully one day I’ll see him again!
Great Watch. Shane looks like a kind person!
Shane is a living legend!
I've seen this same episode a while back. I don't know why the repeat. But, I love the subject.
Let's play.
Great guy great player, a true inspiration.
Love it ! Shane has class !
Shane is a class act, a great face for the game. My favorite player.
At 1:40 he says "this winner". Dude that winner is the world 9 ball champion Joshua Filler. LOL
Funny, this is the second time in 2 days I heard someone refer to pool in terms of geometry. Love Shane n his achievements n style of play... but it's trigonometry - the study of angles that applies to pool.
I’ve seen him live, such an amazing player
He better be practicing 50 plus hours a week
JRB being in the " no gambling" room gambling against pros has to be the most JRB thing ever
I would love for pool to grow in the US. Pool is an easy game to learn, but very hard to master. Seeing it played at the highest level is a pure joy. If it were on TV then I'd definitely watch it.
there is a Billards Channel on my LG tv.. It was also on Samsung Channels on a TV I returned for the LG.
I'm 66 yo ..Back in the 70's .. I married the best pool player in the world .. I am honest when I say he was as good as Shand .. long respect for folks who can shoot some good stick ..
Kids can be horrible when at school but he’s proved em all wrong seems a lovely chap
Wow I never knew he was deaf. Really cool guy. Amazing player.
i love how in the beginning montage the narrator mentions "dozens of the worlds best practitioners", meanwhile it literally showed the best players in the world currently and arguably the goat lol.
Great Video ❤
She is right about the way the men dress.
Our pool room would hold qualifier tournaments back in the 90’s thru mid 2000’s and getting the men to simply wear a collared shirt such as a polo was a struggle.
The women on the other hand were always very professional.
he Blocks out one of his senses which enhances his others. He may be deaf but i feel it works to his advantage. Amazing story
Thank you for everyone help to bring back pool table to it's glory day. 🙏
SVB Is a great player to promote the sport.. I hope he keeps playing for many years.
That was awesome! As a really lousy, but eager pool player, I totally loved that.
And for the hundreds upon hundreds of racks that I’ve played, I’ll never be a pool player. This sport deserves recognition, and their marketing needed this kind of boost.
Vince McMahon is a decent role model of how to get an entertaining event off the ground.
Always impressed by SVB. He has it all figured out and comes across as just plain nice. I love his game focus.
SVB's smile is enough to make me happy. been watching him since 2014. pool is SVB

I played this guy when he was real young like 18 in Rapid City. Super good player! I have actually beat him but usually even back then, if you made a mistake petiod, you were done! Hey Shane! Glad to see you stuck with it all these years!
Shane is def a 👑
Love SVB . What an awesome player
What an inspiring personality ❤
Man i love that theyre trying to make the sport bigger, It needs all the appreciation it deserves. Amazing sport that gets looked down upon because of gambling but it's one of the best aspect of it the thrill when you're playing against a better player that you just have to up your game to his level while playing
You really believe pool gets "looked down upon" (as you say) because of gambling? Gambling is no longer illegal in the U.S. It used to be federally illegal until a few years ago when they dropped the national laws and allowed every state to decide themselves whether its legal. And many states have made it legal. There are even giant DraftKings advertisements right on the courts of professional sport arenas and events. And the gambling live-odds are posted and talked about on national TV before and during the games. Nothing about gambling and sports is a stigma anymore. Soon enough every state will have legalized sports gambling. The government knows how much $ they can make and sports teams appreciate extra attention/viewers from gamblers.
Nobody looks down on gambling in 2023 anymore (unless I suppose its someone they care about and they have a bad addiction). Otherwise ppl dont care if their neighbor or best friend is betting on sports. Cannabis is more stigmatized and "looked down upon" still in 2023 a lot more than gambling is, thats for sure.
Wow never thought he would get this recognizing
I love shane.....keep going brother!
I've been following SVB's career for years. The guy makes it look so easy, you'd think you can go to a pool tournament and clean up. 😂 Shane has the raw talent, extreme work ethic and humility. He's the man. 🎱
I really enjoyed!
This was really interesting!
I remember when I was a kid, the Wide World of Sports was on TV Sundays and sometimes they had professional pool players going head to head, Willie Mosconi, Irving Crane, etc, I would love to see pool tournaments on ESPN again.
It’s a beautiful sport. I am obsessed with it and I recommend everyone to really try it. Not playing with drinks but to really try and make it a hobby you will be surprised
Met Shane at Big Dog Billiards in Des Moines several years ago while playing on a 10’ Diamond. Such a nice guy!
