Learning substitutions was a major part of my understanding theory when I started out. That took on a whole new direction when I began to study modern classical music.
Beautiful photo! Super fine… you both are. Love what you’re doing. Taking my playing to the next level. Love the chord substitutions, and voicing. Keep em coming.
Dominant 13 is one of my favorite sounds. G13 A13 and D13 all sound magical. A ii-V-I substitution that i very much enjoy in G is C∆-F13-G∆. I don't know why F13 resolves well to G major 7 but F13 happens to be the VII7 of G minor.
I love watching your videos, and they come out later in my practice, even though I’m a classical player. I improvise between each piece I work on, at least modulating to the new key, but it usually goes into progressions and altered chords, substitutions, etc. Lately, since I’ve been watching you, your ideas come whispering in while I’m doing that, and I’ll try something new. It’s always great. Makes me feel like a jazz player. (Don’t worry. I know the difference. I was a classical major at North Texas in the 70s) But I have one little request. Could you put your name on there somewhere? I’m know you’re from St. Louis. I remember that much. But I never seem to catch your name, and it’s apparently not on the site. I could be wrong. I’m an impatient old dude, so maybe I just haven’t searched far enough, but I can’t tell you your name, and I think you oughta remedy that. Really. I spent a few years as an agent in international performing arts, and… well… names are important. Yeah, I know, you want it not to be important. Believe me I do. But trust me. You want your name on there. That’s a small contribution considering the huge gift you’ve given me day after day. I’m getting the better deal here, for sure, but hey, I try. Gotta go practice now. Thanks again, Jazz Guy Dude. 😸 [yes, you can quote me]
