I saw her sing this at the Met. This scene was so beautiful, in the bedroom of the countess, sunlight streaming through diaphanous white curtains. And the beautiful voice of Dame Kiri!
One of the greatest, sung by one of the greatest since Tebaldi. Mozart created this glorious duet between the soprano and the oboe. It brings me to tears every time.
Perfectly captured. Tebaldi was a legend, no doubt. However, I believe Dame Kiri's Porgi, Amor is THE gold standard for this Mozart aria. Beyond the Countess, Te Kanawa is one of the finest Mozartian lyric sopranos of all time. Her impeccable technique and phrasing allows her to float a top the music mirroring Mozart's orchestral voicing and overall compositional inclination. The buoyancy of Dame Kiri's phrasing allows her to caress the melodic contour of this pristine piece, imparting to the listener a relaxed, effortlessness that allows for appreciating the clarion timbre of her instrument.
The very best countess (earlier recordings better than this in my view by a country mile - vibrato and pitch issues here). Her mellow tone lends itself to the plaintive nature of this aria - the loss of the love of the other and the yearning for its return.
You think this is good. And it is. You should have heard her sing Fiordiligi in Cosi at the Metropolitan 20 years prior with Colin Davis in the pit. She OWNED the role. Quite simply. End of discussion. She is so beautiful here the Count must have been blind to wander away from such a Countess.
An aria, very delicate, very introspective and difficult to execute transmitting the inner feeling and at the same time commute to the audience effectively those sentiments. The Callas recording does not satisfy me since the words as sung are not executed clearly. The best of these recordings of the aria Porgi amor, for vocal tone, expression of feeling, for me is the one sung by Angela Gheorghiu.
To old voice for this. She went on singing far to long . The brilliance of the voice is gone. High notes are problematic . Listen to her singing this 25 year earlier. The difference is huge.
What do you mean by that? Should every singer retire after turning forty? Of course a voice ages with the singer. But the older singer gains experience, depth, understanding, musicality and interpretation skills. Te Kanawa is the perfect example. Of course the performance is different after 30 years, but in her case it is just as good. Your comment is just stupid age bashing.
That depends on the singer. Some voices age quicker than others. The soprano voice deteriorates quicker than others voice types. Elisabeth Schwartzkopf ones stated that she feld sorry for older singers who were addicted to the stage that they couldn't stop even when they could hardly sing anymore. Of course their is some compensation but after the memo pause most soprano voices don't sound so nice anymore.
@JeanPierre de Vos That is just generalizing bullshit. Many aging sopranos are singing terribly well as Te Kanawa does here. You seem to have other problems with elder women.
@@Beadle_Bamford Then listen to her absolutely beautiful voice 20 years before. The difference is breathtaking. It is mutch ritcher with effortless high notes and a beautiful colour. She was certainly one of those soprano's who went on to long. Far to long.
Beautiful voice of all time, Kiri Te Kanawa.

Una voz bellísima ...Una gran Diva...
Heavenly voice, and a really nice person. I had the pleasure of talking to her several times, a lovely, gracious and genuine lady.
Qué delicadez, qué suavidad, increíble. Maravillosa y con esa orquesta, ni que decir más.!!

Clarinet, you mean, surely.

Wow! Incredible! Amazing!
She is even better here than in her younger days!
Julia J I agree. Her voice was always wonderful, but this has a great depth and maturity and all round greatness. Absolutely love her.
Than something is wrong with your ears. The deterioration of the voice is imminent.
So sweet one can taste the very notes so beautifully uttered as if giving birth
БЛАГОДАРЮ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful performance..any chance to upload complete concert??
For whomever is reading, she sings the role in a dvd of the opera with a wonderful caste, including Bryn Terfel as Figaro.
