Excellent vocal and physical portrayal of longing and sadness for long forgotten affection. The expression on her face speaks volumes...Brava...Brava.

This has long been among my favorite performances in opera. Mozart frequently, as here, provides a duet between the oboe and the soprano. This opera is filled with glorious arias for three different sopranos, and among them all, this is my favorite. Dame Kiri is wonderful! Every time I listen to this it brings tears to my eyes... so beautiful. Catch her in the Magic Flute (Marriner). I wish that had been a live opera performance.

There are no oboes in "Porgi Amor," the only woodwinds clarinets, bassoons and horns.

Stunning, Dame Te Kanawa! She even manages to transcend tears into her voice without the dangers of falling into wailing. She is so in carachter and lovely it´s hard to believe she´s not lip syncing. Bravissima !!

This is the Kiri - both voice and technique - that so impressed Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge when Kiri was just a student in London. They heard something from her that they said was truly special and unique, and boy were they right.

The "Opera" exhibition at V&A Museum in London a while ago had this, sung by KtK, playing about halfway round. When I got to the end of the exhibition, I went back, to make this the last thing I heard before I left: glorious!

Here is the bar that all who want to sing Mozart aspires to for the last 40 years. Kiri's voice and interp. are tailor made to Mozart, Strauss and some Puccini. She sang this aria just as clean and smooth in 1997 as here in 1973! Brava Kiri and thanks for posting!

Agreed! Fleming has so much talent that she sometimes (sometimes) "overthinks" her arias and fashions every note a little too much. (mind you I think Fleming is unbelievably talented!) Kiri and Mozart work well because the phrases are so pure and straightforward and her voice itself is so pure and effortlessly lyric that it lets the music speak for itself. Also works great with (lyrical) Strauss who obviously paid a lot of homage to Wolfgang.

In terms of Mozart's opera arias for lyric soprano, Porgi Amor and Dove Sono i bei momento are not my favorite. In fact, I find them rather dull compared to Mozart's more exciting and fluid arias for lyric sopranos, like Ach ich Fuhl's from The Magic Flute, or Ah, chi mi dice mai (that's more of a spinto soprano aria, but spinto sopranos are a type of lyric soprano albeit a "pushed" more dramatic one) from Don Giovanni. I don't know, maybe I'm biased because I'm a light coloratura soprano. I love arias that required vocal flexibility, and coloratura sections.
However, Kiri te Kanawa truly does make Porgi Amor so beautiful and heartfelt! Her voice is like the richest and purest gold. Plus, it's a staple aria for her full lyric voice! Not to mention, this aria isn't as simple as it sounds. I haven't personally learned it, but I've read it requires great breath control and exquisite phrasing; two vocal techniques that I have a lot to improve on, even though I have been taking lessons for five years now.
Anyway, in Kiri's performance, I can truly feel the desperation and sorrow over the Countess over the loss of her husband's love.

I will try to stay calm not to start a furious rant. You lot of pedantic know-it-alls haven't got an idea what you are talking about. This is one of the arias of Mozart that have made him one of the greatest ever, sung by one of the greatest singers ever. If it is not possible to just listen and be moved by the text and music... at least keep us out of it and keep quiet.

calsouthqueen. High praise for Kiri indeed! The other three, Schwarzkopf, Janowitz and Fleming are tremendous too. I have always though Elisabeth is in a class of her own, and sings German Opera the best. Gundula and Kiri come just behind this. I like Renee, but feel she is a little behind the other three (sorry).
