King Viserys is the prime example of “if you try to please everybody, you end up pleasing nobody”
I don't blame him at all tho, first born daughter on one hand and wife and kids on the other, he would've been a great dad if it weren't about duties
"Try to be honorable and the other 99% of people who aren't will fuck you in your ass for it" seems like such a strong song of ice and fire theme.
I loved the peaceful nature of Viserys, he just tried to keep his family together and united. However, Daemond ended up being right in the end.
I am forever doomed to anger one person in the pleasing of another - Viserys S1.Ep3
It's just having too fucking many kids/family members and an uncertain succession line. It's the perfect medieval recipe for civil war
Aemond’s “holy shit my dragon just started a war” face was so good I can’t fucking wait for Season 2
Don't worry, season 2 is here😅

That little scene of Vhagar appearing from behind the castle wall amidst the heavy rain in the last episode was the best little scene in all of GoT and HoTD ever. That was SCARY.
TRUEEE The ending genuinely shocked me as well. like I thought he was going to make it ;-;. and the distraught on Aemonds face
That's my favourite shot across both series. Terrifying, but also cook as hell.
From this point on I knew something insane would happen, for the rest of the episode I was so fixed on the screen and in some state of shock, which rarely ever happens when I watch something. So good job to the whole team, can't wait for season two
Nope, the scariest scene was a little later when he WASNT there lmao
He was so damn big and bad ass, Arrax never stood a chance
I thought the time skips would be jarring at first and I was pretty used to the young actors, but when the older actors appeared my brain was just like “yeah that’s just the characters grown up”. Amazing casting decisions and the costume design and music for the show is incredible!
I felt Aegon was the only miscast, but the older actor was really good too. I loved Lucerys' time jump the most, dude even has the Bobbinghair lol

@@youngrootv yeah, RIP Luc and Arrax, you will be missed

Oh my god THE costume design for this show is so good, they should of had these guys working on RofP, maybe then it wouldn't have been so lackluster, what a waste of a billion dollars smh.
@@conwaytwittyer2667 RoP is passable, not a complete dumpster fire as many claim. But for a billion dollars sunk into it, the outcome is BAD. They need to focus on setup and dialog, especially the dialogues, and stop making the sets so generic. Finally, they need to include more lore. Rn they're putting in tidbits while introducing contradictory garbage. First season, so fine. If the next season is this bad, it's all downhill from there
I like how Jackson actually gave a s**t enough about Charlie's opinion on this show that he actually edited in that he disagreed

Why, though? The 2 people responsible for season 8 aren't working on this show. It's on HBO. The source material is finished. GRRM will be a producer for the entire series. And this is still one of, if not the best fantasy worlds ever created. It just doesn't make sense to me why people were so worried, or just flat out not going to watch, when they found out that Dumb and Dumber weren't going to be anywhere near this show. George R.R Martin has actually said Daemon is his favourite character because you never truly know if he’s good or evil. The character rides that line so well and Matt Smith is doing him justice in the show.
In the books maybe, but in the show he's pretty straight up evil. He murdered at least 2 innocent people that I can remember
Yeah I like him and ill start trusting his character then he will go do something that reminds me that he isnt a good guy. Like last episode when he grabs rheanerys by the throat, quickly reminds me that he is still a villain somewhat

Vhagar and Aemonds scenes in the last episode were truly haunting
My heart was racing from the suspense the whole time even though i knew what was going to happen, and thats testament to the talent of the shows creators to create tension
same, my mind was running through many different scenarios on how it would happen but what surprised me was still when it happened
How would Rhaenara know Aemond killed him though? Werent they flying over the sea in a storm? He could have got struck by lightning, i mean no one else saw.
@@frostythesnowman9903 i think that if any of Arrax's chomped up and dismembered remains were found, even just some... it would be immediately evident that it was killed by another dragon, and that Lucerys had died as well, whether they found anything left of him or not. What else could bring down such a beast in such a way but another, larger dragon? From there its only a bit of detective work determining who the most likely killer was
It would already be evident that it was one of the Greens' dragons as the only other enemy with dragons at their disposal, and after that it would be as simple as learning Aemond was at Storms End and that he left with Vhagar the same time Lucerys did
When we see Rhaenrya at the very end of the season, she may not know all of this yet, we arent given a definitive answer on that, but I think she can piece together ENOUGH to know that her enemies at Kings Landing are most likely responsible for her sons death
I cant remember/dont know if they touch on this more in the books, but i think show viewers are given enough information and hints to piece together how they learned everything
100%. My jaw physically dropped when Vhagar killed Lucerys. The cinematography of that scene was wow. When Lucerys breaks above the storm into the open sky and everything goes quiet we knew what was going to happen. They both lost control of their dragons and it really showed what Viserys was talking to Rhaenyra about in episode one, how their control of dragons was an illusion. Something that was not explored at all in GoT. 10/10 finally
Same here
Just to let you know Charlie they really only covered 2 chapters from the book. Most people thought this series would have maybe 1-3 episodes of buildup and then hop staright into episode 9 or 10. I actually think the slow pacing this season was a genius move by hbo because it allowed us to get acquainted with the characters in the show and show their personalities and relationships and how the kingdom was before the true dance of the dragons began.
How many chapters are there in the book
Yeah how many
Yeah i’ve started the book recently. It’s written as an account of history. You don’t get to learn that much about a character’s personality or get to connect with them the same way you can here. The slow buildup gives you that chance, and will probably make the coming conflict even more meaningful.
@@LK25278 HotD adapted 80 pages. Got Season 1 adapted 694 pages.
@@liamjm9278 It is mainly a history book so it makes sense they're not using as much, they need to show more personality etc
Viserys truly earned the title “The Peaceful”. He put so much effort into keeping the peace, that he avoided or was complacent in most of the conflicts in his life.

Fax. He was the best character in the show. I actually felt something when seeing him almost dead
He didn’t start any shit directly but naming his daughter his heir only to have two sons with the daughter of an extremely ambitious and power hungry lord was bound to cause conflict. He was weak.
I think he tried to lead by example as being a good man. Which has some merit. But he wasn't quite punishing enough. I mean he did remove otto as hand when he realized he was conniving against Rhaenerys, and the guy he replaced him with seemed like a good dude too. The issue was that Otto had already trained Allicent too well, and unfortunately he really did love allicent.
I think the time jumping is pretty essential to the style of the show.
Ratio + k-pop better🤓🤓🤓🤓
OMG SO MANY BOTS
it is essential because the season would draggggggg if they didn't
I agree. The only thing that got confusing was keeping track of everyone's name and where exactly they fit into the family. That's not far off from what happened with me reading the books anyways because I did the same damn thing lol.
i can understand why some viewers were put off by the inconsistency in aging with some characters, but the folks like charlie who struggled to understand where the story was going after the episode 6 time jump make me scratch my head a bit. like, the conflict is the same, the character motivations are the same, with the exception of daemon and laena almost every character was still living in the same place, etc. i just dont see what there is to misunderstand lol. if you can't pick up on what's going on with rhaenyra, laenor and strong within the first 5 minutes of episode 6 then you're just bad at seeing context clues lmao
I was also thrown off by the amount of kids/pregnancies, until the last episode when they started counting dragon riders. If you have to ability to birth kids that can ride dragons, and you have extra eggs/unclaimed dragons, then it makes sense to try to have as many kids as possible
You should also bare in mind that this is the Medieval era, where a small cut on your arm can end with you dead. Monarchs, and nobles, would try to have as many children as possible, in case their firstborn didn't make it.
@@cynicat74 Some monarchs try to have less and less children too, to avoid instances such as these lmao
Atleast that's what I do on CK2, I purposely send my 2nd son to the vanguard so he doesn't try and attempt to usurp my firstborn later on
@@ashuriaatojudoThat does make me wonder how often the second born would attempt to unsurp the firstborn for the throne. Because being the firstborn means extra responsibility. While, if someone is the youngest, they can just chill with the riches they have and no extra responsibility unlike the heir.
Didn't expect so many scenes of tension and turns, but it managed to work on the development of nearly all the characters. For the most part, this series came out as a winner!
The actor who plays Viserys was the motivating factor for Matt Smith to join the cast. He wanted to act with him.
What an awesome call!! Matt Smith is a really entertaining actor!!
And they had some great scenes together
NO WONDER PADDY AND MATT FELT LIKE THEY HAD SOME GENUINE CHEMISTRY!!
And they both acted the fuck out of it. Best two performances. That scene in the throne room !
Paddy Consodine is probably my favorite actor ever. If you’re trying to cry, watch ‘In America’, if you want a fantastic slow-burn horror watch The Outsider.

I 100% agree on Viserys, i always thought he was a wimpy king, he ignored his brother's crimes and disobedience, he ignored his daughter's acts of "indecency" he just tries to please everyone, and i think the way the called him "Viserys the Peaceful" in the end was so fitting
I personally think that viserys being so wealthy actually caused Rhynaera to become so stuck up and entitled, drove Alicent to more desperate measures, ruined the friendship the two had, caused several wars with the triarchy only 1 of which are covered so far, and his stubborn refusal to even hear out the accusations against his daughter are a huge reason why things went from ok, to bad, to worse. I guess the morals of the story are:
1. Don't try to please everyone, you will end up pleasing no-one.
2. Sometimes the truth will hurt, a lot. Despite this , refusal to heed it will hurt even more and cause further problems down the road (refusing to accept that his daughter is a bit of a hoe)
3. Sometimes rules and traditions are there for a reason, and refusal to take heed of them will result in your friends slowly turning against you.
4. Indecisiveness will come back to bite you. As you keep putting off problems for "next time" the problems only grow and fester.
The first season is pretty much a warm up. The real show begins next season. I absolutely loved the time jumps, It felt like a viewer guide to what caused the dance of dragons.
This show really shines were you read the base material, mostly because the entire first season consists on 80 pages of the book. 80 pages. That's what they had to make the entire season. They really made things out of nothing.

Sarah Hess is forcing feminism changing alot from the books fuckin up daemons charachter deleting his scenes (she deleted all scenes daemon was showing love to his daughters),she is forcing us to like the female protagonists, He has the least screen time. Remove sarah hess the feminist immediatly from season 2 before she ruins daemons charachter and the entire show for everyone. she insulted grr martin saying that he made alicent evil( she is a crazy villain in the books ) so we will change that in season 2 bec. women are angels and men are creating false image in books. (she hates daemon and she is upset that fans love him she said that in an interview)
The fact that they improved on the book characters, too... Especially Aemond and Viserys. Didn't think that was possible. Great, great acting and writing all around. I'd also give it a 10/10 without a doubt.
This show is made with the sort of love and care that GOT needed in its final seasons and even with this show being as good as it is it’s hard to really enjoy it knowing how the story eventually ends tbh
Well as far as the aging up thing w/Viserys - he was cut by the chair which gave him an infection, was stated later he had a form of leprosy which made him rot inside and out and that's why he looked like he was aging etc.
Viserys was also known as Viserys The Peaceful, but his kindness often was his downfall.
The age jumps were explained to give some background to the relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent as children growing up together, and how close they were until decisions outside of their control changed the trajectory of their friendship.
Respect to you for your take on this series though!! I absolutely loved it and looking fwd to S2 in....2024 lololol

As for the time jumps, that's history for you. Important events are years if not decades apart
I think they handled time jumps in a decent way.
And as far as I know future events will be chronologically closer to each other so this was some sort of a prologue.
I mean there’s not necessarily much of difference when dealing with medieval politics.
@@johannesziaether3916 yes the rest of the 3 seasons take place in 2 years in universe time

Like how joffrey "spoils" the end in the original game of thrones.
I'm wondering if the big twist will be that they fake their deaths to hide in safety like they did with Leanor.
Everything from the visuals to the music to the underlying themes it’s perfect
What underlying themes did you identify?
Most characters do visibly age, but it's subtly and some aged too gracefully for a like 20 year total of timeskips (Cole being the prime example.) Many characters will grow grey hairs, have a receding hairline, present themselves differently and even have different body languages to signify time passing.
I'd say though, our two main characters start out as teens, and end with their mid thirties, which is a period in which their *everything* changes drastically. So I'd say their massive changes, contrasted by the extremely graceful aging of the rest of the cast, makes the timeskips feel a bit puzzling sometimes
I hope Paddy Considine wins an award for Episode 8, what a fucking fantastic performance. The rest of the Dance of Dragons won’t have time jumps as the entire civil war lasts about a year and they’re going to stretch that to 3 10 episode seasons, might not be enough still but better than what we got now!
They can always make it 5 seasons and stop at Aegon3s coronation
This show was an emotional ride and I cannot wait for more. Great job to the entire production, cast, crew, everyone.

Love what they did with the transition in change of characters,it fills like we didnt get another batch of new actors but felt theyre the same person just the grown up version.
What they did was even though the new ctors came up like the a couple ep after, the new actors were present since day 1 and would study how the old actors act and the characters mannerisms, thats why we got this feeling that the young actors never leave the series.
Don’t think we haven’t noticed how good your hair has been looking lately Charlie
It's a generational show so I think that they set it up as best they could. It's difficult to show such a long stretch of time just to set up the real conflict. After this season there will be much less time jumping and I think that anyone who was confused after this season will really love the coming seasons. Also with the names GRRM has said that he modeled it off real royal lines where literally everyone is named Elizabeth Mary or Henry. I'm personally very excited to see what comes with this show
It's really cool how a
George uses real life elements of the royal family and it makes everything evidently stupid and ridiculous
the passage of time is also pretty realistic when you look at how long some wars lasted. asoiaf is vaguely inspired by the events of the war of roses, which lasted 3 decades. and it's not just the infighting amongst the targaryens, they did a pretty good job a subtly alluding to how long the brackens and blackwoods have been feuding with one another. all these royal houses tend to hold grudges lol
When Daemon said it’s Daemon time and then Daemons all over the place, truly one of the greatest moments in TV

Genuine question, is this meant to be funny or does it just kind of sit in the same camp as comments that just quote the video?
This meme needs to die already
@@enemystand2981 genuine answer: it’s a running joke amongst all widely viewed TV shows to have a main character main charactering the entire series.
The finale was a masterpiece
Wouldn’t go that far. It was a good episode though.
@@hotmailbutts416 yeah honestly episode 9 and 8 were better. Finale was still very solid though.
Na episode 8 was a master piece, my favorite in bot got and hotd
who’s here after season 2 came out?
Its such a good show, it’s gotten better ever episode.
It's hilarious how Californians choose to be blissfully ignorant of their impending doom 🤣
I've been a bit skeptical about it, but 80% is strong enough for me
I like how they made Criston Cole basically immortal.

After the time skip I thought all the aged up characters were great but bruh how tf does Criston look 20 years old when he’s supposed to be like in his mid 40s at this point lol
Yeah he's kinda like the mountain in this one...
@@BlackCrowOfDeath To be fair, there are people who are very old but look youthful.
I think the pregnancies and time jumps explains a lot in the show … yes they kinda gave me whiplash on how often they jumped but George explains that there were sooo many Targaryen’s around at this time both full grown and babies that a civil war was almost inevitable. There were so many Targaryen’s that had claim for the throne that war was always on the horizon … and because season one is a prequel to The Dance setting up the characters their personalities, ambition, loyalties , etc and I think that’s why there are so many pregnancies to explain the amount of Targaryen’s alive at this time and why the war happens

King Viserys had leprosy. That's why he seems to age fast as fuck. He was literally rotting
Today I learned Charlie has an editor- i always thought he edited his own videos. Although, I'm a decently new fan (found him a while back but only started watching his videos religiously this year because I graduated and sit in my house all day doing nothing so his videos give me connection to the outer realm) so I suppose it makes sense as to why I'd be surprised
i had no idea he has an editor either. you're not the only one
As someone who spent the 3 years after graduating doing fuck all, I recommend getting a job ASAP. Doing nothing will just lead to endless boredom and depression
Lmao of course he has an editor. Everyone over a million subs is going to hire an editor. It's not even a matter of skill, it's a matter of time. When you're at that level, your time is going to be more cost effective when it's spent almost anywhere else besides editing the videos.
@@CamMackay96 I do have a job now that I enjoy, but thank you for your concern and advice ☺
@@CUlater44433AnimationandArt great to hear, all the best 👍🏼
Enjoyed the editor's note from Jackson about it being slow paced 😂 it was quite the opposite
Paddy Considine deserves an Emmy. Viserys is my favorite GoT character ever.
As far as the time jumps, they did a good job honestly using season 1 to set up the conflict to the point that you actually care about the characters. Plus, I think the young alicent and Rhyanera ended up being so good, they kept them and stretched their time to almost half the season. And man, the stakes of the ending were so well setup that I cant wait til season 2
I feel the same. The time jumps were a little confusing, but I don't think they could have done it any other way. If they started with big Alicent and Rhaenyra, then they would have had to do a ton of flashbacks to get the same message across. Looking back on it, I prefer this way and it makes more sense instead of flashbacking constantly. Keeps the story chronological, even if you have to mentally do some character gymnastics
Wait years now
Ep 9 with Rhaenys killing all those civilians was the only big misstep for me. Otherwise, Viserys' arc was mesmerizing, his actor deserves awards for that performance, and the acting and writing was really solid

Definitely them making her a person willing to kill thousands for no reason kind of killed her character for me.
Still loved season 1 though
@@asimhussain8716 no the dragon must have another way of getting out, how else did they get him in there?
@@pimpdaddyg2081 I really liked Rhaenys before and they completely ruined her character for me. I cringed everytime she was on screen in the finale. And considering I have read the book and knows her fate, she comes off as bigger idiot.
@@Flugs0 through the stairs descending into the "underground" of the dragon pit. Aemond is looking like a witcher absolutely love it.
Living season 2 so far (watching this a year after it was posted)
The focus on pregnancy and birth is one of the best aspects of the show
Totally agreed. There isn't villains and heroes. You can ever argue that the biggest villain is the patriarchy. It's really spot on with the themes of the book.
@@almightyproductions9657 considering how a big aspect of what pushes the events of HOTD is the fact that Rhaenyra is not a first born son, fantasy or no, involves the patriarchy.
I do wish they showed less detail when it came to failed pregnancies though, that was hard to watch at times. Especially the first one.
@@almightyproductions9657 You could argue that Rhaenerya's cause is not a feminist conflict because she does not intend to make things better for other women and is just about her, a valyrian Targaryen, not wanting to play by andal succession law because she thinks they are an special case like they do with the incestual marriages, whereas Alicent is in her mindset and predicament because of the patriarchal society and faith she practices not because some intrinsect hate for Rhaenerya but the fact that you continously reffer to the real life sex based, tangible, oppresion of women as an alleged phenomena and want to make out a woman responding to a comment you made about women as somehow treating the OP as a weak damsel makes it clear that you do not want to have a real meaningful talk about patriarchy related to this show(or any, because you do not need or want to talk about it), you just want to discredit any conversation relating to how those things impact anything because you find womens lived reality annoying to hear, go watch Formula 1 if you don't want social nuance in your shows
@@almightyproductions9657 Most people don't use the textbook definition of most things and it is intelligently dissingenous at best to pretend the constantly documented lived experiences of women are alleged because random individuals define patriarchy (applied as an structure and system that upholds male dominance via the oppresion of women in every living sphere) with different wordings. I admitted that mysogyny and female empowerment doesn't fit into the neat tidy box a lot of watchers want it to go into (Rhaenerya being a girlboss female liberator) but I also alluded to the ways in which there is still very much a patriarchy in action in the world of Westeros with my comment about Alicent, even if it is not a 1:1 replica of real world society, same way there is a feudal system in place even if medieval civil wars weren't fought with dragons.
To answer your question: Yes, because the only way you are going to get no input about the paralels between real world oppression and examples of the same in fiction is by excluding all people who experience any kind of oppresion from those discussions. Also let's not pretend this is some niche DnD campaign being played in a basement, this is a multimillion dollar show being built upon one of the biggest cultural pop culture successes of the 21st century who are you gatekeeping this from.
I used formula 1 because it as further away you can get from needing to analyze any kind of social nuance and inner character motivations in a show since you seem to hate it, I have nothing against it and I'm sure afficionados could tell you why it is an interesting sport, not sure where you perceived shame.
That family feast in one of the later episodes was really wholesome.....for a moment.
I got hit right in 'the feels' when Charlie stated that the final seasons of GOT murdered its reputation--and for a time it was the most popular show. Now no one talks about it. I remember the taste of bitterness while sitting through those seasons. Its not that we don't talk about it. Its that we want to forget. It hurts to remember ha.

Except hes completely wrong. HoTd is shattering viewership records because of the success of GoT. And GoT still has a 9 on IMDB, the hate for s8 is all bandwagon herd mentality let's just be honest. Vocal minority like to complain about it on the internet.
@@13_faces nah man season 8 was absolute trash but the series overall is still amazing
@@13_faces vocal minority? are you insane? it's by far the majority opinion that 1: season 8 was rushed and at best a disappointing end to many characters storylines, and that 2: GoT had been dropping in quality since about season 5. That's not even just keyboard warrior opinions, those are the general opinions you'll find IRL too, or at least the opinions I've seen from friends/family/acquaintances
@@SythonToTheZ it is a vocal minority. Everyone I know thought season 8 was fine. And these are book readers and people who actually followed the show from its start and not people who jumped on when it got popular like you. IMDB user score is still over a 9. The only people who whine and cry incessantly about later seasons are bandwagoners who enjoy having a hate boner because the internet told them to, and that's just the facts.
1 day before the first episode of season 2 is released... Very excited.
Never seen a show/movie pull off time jumps so well. However, I’m definitely looking forward to the timeline leveling out.
Great first season, the last episode dragon chase had my heart absolutely racing
It's hilarious how Californians choose to be blissfully ignorant of their impending doom 🤣
I wholeheartedly agree. My biggest issue was all the time jumping. They could've given me a full season about young Rhaneyra. But I think the time jumps will stop being so prevalent in the next season. From what I understand the show is supposed to be based around the kids of Rhaneyra and Allicent
Primarily, yes. Most of the conflict in Fire and Blood is based around the Greens vs the Blacks. Very little conflict happens during Rhaenyra and Allicent's childhoods. A show making a gamble like this really needs to set up some huge payoff for next season, otherwise it won't gain any traction.
I think you might need to do a co-review with Jackson because he seems to have a lot to say
As a new Charlie fan I'm so happy to hear he likes hotd while still being critical of it. Also appreciate your input Jackson.
One of the main points of the show is to show the hardships women go through in this world, pregnancy and the duty of pregnancies being one of them, 2 characters die in the show because of it, pregnancy is a gamble and yet these women still have to do it regardless, honestly the pregnancies are one of the high points of the show
I’m glad that he did official moist meter episodes even though he told us briefly about it in a previous video

The book Fire and Blood which talks about the events in this series (no spoilers) makes me super excited to see how it progresses from here. Timejumps won't happen as often anymore, maybe between seasons they'll do timejumps now, but it'll be better. Excited for what's to come.
I really enjoy how the show presents a more clear-cut version of events that challenges what's been written by the Maesters. It goes such a long way to creating an air of mystery for even the most devout novel enthusiasts.
I think this is on of my favourite series it is a 9.5/10 and i can't wait for season 2
Viserys is like the Ned Stark of the show, he has a good heart, he loves his family - and despite his moments of indecisions, he stood by the biggest decision he made in keeping his daughter as the rightful heir. That moment he walked up the Throne all banged up and near-dead, and Daemon came to help him, that was just...MWUAH! 👌
hes proly the second best targeryan king from what i recall
I think one can easily grasp the names if they pay enough attention
I'm a huge fan of the book and I'm absolutely in love with the show. Obviously there are changes here and there that I don't care for, but this show has been a blessing imo.
I really liked Miguel’s main storyline, which is women’s battlefield is the birthing bed. Aemma and Baelon’s deaths drive that home. The rest of the story is fascinating, but I appreciate the emphasis on how brutal childbirth is
it's true, there are some jumps, and also the family tree is very, very complicated. The characters and names aren't easy. The unfortunate thing though, is that this is what the book is too. For GRRM, adding a character is just a few sentences. For a show, it's basically an actor, shows, scenes character development. Definitely not easy. The time jumps are necessary to get there, but jarring surely. We're only lucky that most of the actors are proficient enough to land the landing. Imagine if Aemond couldn't pull off the transition, it would look pretty bad.
And Vizzy T is GOATED. 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
