really awesome demo. just proved to me i like what i like. i'm really into marshall and hiwatt. listened to the clips and chose the jcm800 and hiwatt as my favorites. thanks for making the demo. it's really hard to find an unbias demo.
Thanks for going thru all the trouble! Overall, I liked the Hiwatt, esp on the dirt clips...I'm sure with tweaking there could be many surprises, but this test gave a great overview of each amps character...kudos!
Awesome demo! I loved this. It's great that you didn't reveal which amp was which until the end so we could hear them more objectively. #6 (Hiwatt) was my sound all the way. Sounds so amazing, thick, and rich. Some of the others sounded better dirty but I don't play dirty much, and if I do, I'm happy using a pedal. Runner-up for me was the EBS, pretty full warm sound, although I'd EQ it to take out some of the high-frequency buzz/noise. If these amps are all yours I'm soooooo jealous! :) Enjoy them and thanks again.
+R.D. Dragon Don't be jealous. All of them are not mine. But most are. ;) Got some new toys and new videos with more amps. You can find them from my channel. And thanks for the feedback!
The Sound City is actually part of our guitarists gear. So it’s usually used as a guitar amp. Also the JMP and Hiwatt works great as a guitar amp too. These old amps are quite versatile and suits well in many different applications.
The reason why I didn't use Ampeg is that I don't have one. I made this one out of the (bass) amps I / my bandmates had. I'm planning to make it bigger next time... Going out of the practice room and into the studio. More mics, more amps and some quality 8x10" cab. Maybe just one riff with two gain settings. Amps I'd like to add are: Ampeg (SVT / V4B), 5F6-A Bassman (signal from the combo to some other cab), Matamp GT200 etc. and the most common one Hartke 3500 (even without the tubes).
The EBS, Orange and Hiwatt sounded the best, clear and punchy. I can't stand when a tube bass amp is farty and soft like the sound city and the marshall. At that point you might as well go direct in
Great review. I like the EBS P90 the best. The Mesa 400+ is great too but the damn thing is so heavy it will take your back out. I have been playing out with a Eden 300t which I like a lot too. :)
Great video! One thing has to be said about the "12 o'clock" default setting, though: Of course it's the way to go when comparing amps back to back. One possible exception would be the JCM 800's "slope" knob, which is simply a low-cut filter! AFAIK, the default ("neutral") setting is the "zero" position. Set at 12 o'clock, you already lack quite a bit of low-end, which is exactly what was originally intended in order to get a cleaner tone at high volumes.
I got pics of the setup somewhere. Most likely I had the slope at "zero". I also had to boots (most likely) the sound city's active EQ as it didn't really work at all when set to 12 o'clock
As I said I wasn't able to get Ampeg to this video project. But I'm planning to re-compare with early 70's V-4B and some other amps. Let's see about the CL.
Orange doesn't really like the comparison settings we used. We ran all the amps with "flat EQ", all pots centered. Orange (as SoundCity and Marshall) has some kind of an active EQ. If you turn all the EQ pots all the way down the amp goes silent. All centered it's working somehow (like JCM too... SC didn't like that setting at all) so we ran it all pots centered. I usually use it with EQ: T=0 M=8 B=5 or something like that (scale 0-10). If you have a AD200B it should have quite similar EQ.
Yes they do. Several ones... From the JMP era to modern ones. JMP heads (50w and 100w SuperBass), IBS amps, JCM Bass series (50w and 100w) and VBA amps etc.
Good comparative review . Thanks . Biggest thing I noticed is that only the newer amps ( Orange and EBS ) have any higher frequency presence. That is the ttzzztt that one might want for a funk sound. None of the sounds had a strong fundamental either . ( I know there was no equalisation applied )
Back in 1973 when I was a teenager, my dad got me an Orange bass amp with the 2x15 scoop bass cabinet It ran so hot the solder would melt He tried to fix it but it kept on overheating and blow the fuses Yeah something in the output was shorted out We got a refund. It's funny you had a very simular experience. The carpentry and good looks, made these very nice to have around. Back then it was Wishbone Ash, a brother group from the UK.
Let' see what I can find for the next one... I got some ideas I'd like to try, but unfortunately the time is always an issue. Next I might do a distortion comparison as I'm still searching for a decent one.
As I said before... These are my amps / my friends amps. So there were no Ampegs / Mesas available. More amps coming later... Let's see what the next lineup will be.
I got to plug a Rickenbacker 4003 in Midnight Blue into a huge fucking EBS stack with all the pedals EBS had, i don't think i've ever had THAT much fun in my fucking life!
I think it is. It depend on what capinets you are using. Lately I've been giggin' with the JMP (50W) and that has been enough. EBS does the trick also.
Love all the amps for all the different tones. For me I like the Hiwatt as it's clean and distinct even when distorted and Sounds city for the same reason. I find the marshals loose the tone when compressed/saturated. And the orange picks up a lot of finger noise and clicking. The ebs isn't really musical though. This is all subjective of course. My tastes. Great Demo though. Question? do they make the sound city amps anymore?
I thought the Hiwatt sounded really, really nice. The Orange sounded too bright (in a bad way) for my tastes. The JMP had some neat grit on the clean channel. The rest were all pretty unremarkable one way or the other.
Getting a true clean sound from a 50w JMP head is almost impossible. But with a really low volume (volume on 2 or less) it sounds killer. Deep clean tone. I think that on the video the volume is opened up to around 3 so it's already starting to get overdriven.
It is. But it's not available anymore. It's a limited Custom Shop run. Check out Orang amps site there's a story about this amp under the Heritage menu.
I'm listening again to both the clean and dirty samples and not looking at the screen and the Hiwatt(#6) comes in best again to me for both clean and dirty, musical and well-controlled. I can see now why these were such highly prized amps back in the day. I'm thinking of going with a modern Hiwatt clone, a Reeves custom 225 or a Hi-Tone DR200. They are expensive and heavy to carry around but I'm tired of fooling around with thin bass tone from my SS amps.
Hopefully going to be getting a JCM800 bass on the strength of these soundclips. sounds surprisingly great clean. How loud is it compared to some of the other amps? also. what's the dimensions of it?
sorry for the late reply. The size matches all other JCM heads. You can google the dimensions. It's pretty loud if distorted but it doesn't have that much clean headroom. Cheers!
A year ago I picked that one blind (I'm primarily a guitarist). Now that I've owned a couple basses and amps, I've come back to this video to blind again, and found that I prefer 2 and 6 for a mix. The Orange is definitely the best at hitting those guitar frequencies, so not bad for when you're playing in front of the amp for yourself.
Amazing, thank you for sharing! The Musicman sounds awesome, even without the active electronic. Would you please tell me what kind of strings you are using? Thanks a lot!
Well I never had one. Right now I'm searching for a V-4B. That would be a cool amp to have. The amps on this video are mine / my friends. So that's the reason there is no Ampegs featured.
Orange AD140B, it was the most nasty out of all them. I personally wouldn't use it for conventional settings, but it would be a go-to for good old fingerstyle death metal, or distorted hardcore.
I reckon the reason the Hiwatt and JCM800 sounded best is down to the quality of the output transformer. You need a lot of good quality iron and copper for decent bass response, and this costs money. Usually, they're smaller and cheaper on guitar amps (compared to hi-fi amps, that is)...
Hi. No they don't manufacture the SCs anymore. At least that's what I've heard. Personally I love all these amps... Every amps has a style that it suits well. And believe me the Orange is one of the best ones but the flat EQ doesn't really bring up it true nature. I've used the Orange in many occasions and it really ROCKS!
Mine keeps blowing power amp tubes... So I ordered new cabs and some resistors and (once again) new tubes to it. Got to get it fixed since it's one awesome amp when working as it is supposed. What's the problem in your JCM?
I was surprised when I found out which was the orange. I expected awesome and instead I heard stink. To me it felt clicky and sterile. I was also a bit shocked that the warmest tone was in fact the Marshall 1986, a bit fuzzy and super round
WOW! The one I love more is the one I got: ORANGE! I won on GAS! ;) But I must say that my AD200B mk3 has a lot of bass, more than the clip. I also missed the SVT. Good work anyway
Orange doesn't really benefit from this center EQ thing. Check out some AD200B demos and you'll hear the true nature of this amp. It is an AMAZING amp indeed.

It would be cool to hear Acoustic 370, GK 800RB, Peavey Mark IV, 700 or Firebass. All those "work horse amps"... I guess edens, aguilar and other more boutique amps would be cool to see if people can really sense a difference. I'll see if I can get a research grant from someone to do this... i wish.
Have you played your mk3 with similar settings (EQ centered). I think that the EQ should be quite similar. KT88 do sound a little different than the 6L6's in my AD but otherwise it should sound quite the same. mk3 has more gain since it has on ECC83 gain stage more. I've played 'em both but I haven't done a shootout between them. Let's add that one to my TODO list.
Thank you, very enlightening. But RFTs don't belong in a Hiwatt, IMO. Too dark. Good for bright Marshalls, though, like e.g. a JCM800. For the Hiwatt do yourself a favour and get some NOS Mullard I63 ECC83s and a NOS Mullard CV4024 in V4. Maybe a Sylvania 5751 in V1 to make it even cleaner, but that might be too clanky. Depends on your speakers.
Hi. Clean / dirty clips don't actually represent my point of view on this clean / dirty conversation. Low gain / full gain might have been better topics for the clips. To me clean means something with no distortion at all... Like Hiwatt or JCM. Overdrive is something like "clean JMP" or something a bit more distorted. Some of the dirty clips like dirty JMP represent more or less fuzz sound to me. Still looking forward to record that distortion video I've been talking about.
2:06, 2:34, 2:53, 3:13, 3:33, 3:53 4:15, 4:33, 4:52, 5:11, 5:29, 5:46 1. Not bad, but maybe too much upper mid emphasis 2. Pretty good 3. Way too nasal and farty 4. Similar to 3 but less dramatic 5. Far too mid focused 6. Favorite in blind
Great video format thank you! I enjoyed the Hiwatt the most. The JCM 800 was a close second.
really awesome demo. just proved to me i like what i like.
i'm really into marshall and hiwatt.
listened to the clips and chose the jcm800 and hiwatt as my favorites.
thanks for making the demo. it's really hard to find an unbias demo.

Omg, finally someone with a demo of the ebs t90, thank you !! :)
I've one Sound City B120 which i use for a guitar. Added with pedals, this amp is absolutely amazing, and loud as hell.
Hiwatt on all tests for me. Sounded the best. Amp 2 was a close second

- Hiwatt DR201
Love the Sound City, brilliant amp!
This is really great, thanx a lot for your work :D

2. Marshall JCM 800 bass series (model 1992)
3. Sound City B120
4. Marshall JMP 1986
5. Orange AD140B
6. Hiwatt DR201
this was really well done and very informative, thank you sir!

Ah number 5! I knew I loved orange! Though I bet number 3 would sound kick ass with a nice fuzz pedal.
I used CUSTOM HIWATT 200's for bass for years, sound great with an SVT Cab
Clifford S I got an SVT810 also. Great combination with the Hiwatt.
clean i love the sounds like EBS Classic T90 and Orange AD140B
Yes they do. Several ones... From the JMP era to modern ones. JMP heads (50w and 100w SuperBass), IBS amps, JCM Bass series (50w and 100w) and VBA amps etc.

That's right. EQ plays a huge role, that's why I didn't use any. EQ can make them all sound completely different. Also the cab makes difference.
NEW VIDEO FINALLY ONLINE!!!
Bass amp samples part 1. The clean samples.
New video with +20 REAMPED amps coming soon… Stay tuned!
TKaimapoika wheres this video? Cheers
Sound City sounds so f****in good... sweet mellow tone
Back in 1973 when I was a teenager, my dad got me an Orange bass amp with the 2x15 scoop bass cabinet

Was it Orange or Orange - Matamp? Not too many 70's Orange bass amps around I think. My JCM had a bad bias circuit... That's why the blown tubes.
Great shootout! Well done!
Happy to Sub your channel!
I have the beefed up DR-201 circuit
in my Reeves Custom 225. Glorious Rich Tone!
I got to plug a Rickenbacker 4003 in Midnight Blue into a huge fucking EBS stack with all the pedals EBS had, i don't think i've ever had THAT much fun in my fucking life!

The Hiwatt DR 201(amp #6) was my favorite.
The stock tubes are not the best possible ones... Have you tried KT88's in it? Which cabinet are you using?
Which AIC song? Just wondering since I really like AIC.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
thanks for doing this!

was just wondering where is the ampeg and mesa's only the best tube amps of all time
Love the sound city, my favorite
that orange is really for bass? 'Cause i don't find it on the net...if someone can help me!
8:21 Sounds damn near identical to Mike Dirnt’s bass tone on Dookie by Green Day
How did you not include an Ampeg svt 2 pro or CL on this?
I reckon the reason the Hiwatt and JCM800 sounded best is down to the quality of the output transformer. You need a lot of good quality iron and copper for decent bass response, and this costs money. Usually, they're smaller and cheaper on guitar amps (compared to hi-fi amps, that is)...
That's right. At least the Hiwatt has huge Partridge transformers.
Well, I thought the Hiwatt sounded best of the lot, so that makes sense. Very interesting test, by the way, and thanks for sharing on TH-cam.
where the ampeg svt cl?
What's the problem in your JCM?
it's amazing how much the orange amp didn't hold out in comparison... i used to think these things were awesome.
I was surprised when I found out which was the orange.
I expected awesome and instead I heard stink.
To me it felt clicky and sterile.
I was also a bit shocked that the warmest tone was in fact the Marshall 1986, a bit fuzzy and super round
Quinton Viskup
There's now a better sample of the Orange with some other Oranges at th-cam.com/video/SpxRKkb2Hm4/w-d-xo.html
my vote: 1) orange - clean and bright, 2) hi-watt - clean but darker, 3) marshall, other amps - too fuzzy
WOW! The one I love more is the one I got: ORANGE! I won on GAS! ;)
But I must say that my AD200B mk3 has a lot of bass, more than the clip. I also missed the SVT. Good work anyway
Amp #5 with the fender was the best for me.
Orange doesn't really benefit from this center EQ thing. Check out some AD200B demos and you'll hear the true nature of this amp. It is an AMAZING amp indeed.
I personally liked the Hiwatt's sound. I think the Orange was clanky-maybe could be EQ's better-but would definitely not be on my wish list. That said, all tonal preference in sound is very subjective!
Okay... Here you can listen the first clips for the upcoming comparison video. I might still record some more...
soundcloud.com/jakkeko/sets
Is the ebs t90 loud enough for live?
It would be cool to hear Acoustic 370, GK 800RB, Peavey Mark IV, 700 or Firebass. All those "work horse amps"... I guess edens, aguilar and other more boutique amps would be cool to see if people can really sense a difference.
I'll see if I can get a research grant from someone to do this... i wish.
I preferred the Hiwatt, myself.
Hiwatt is a great all around amp!
Also would have been cool to hear the mother of all bass amps, the Ampeg SVT along side. Just saying.
Again awesome job.
Have you played your mk3 with similar settings (EQ centered). I think that the EQ should be quite similar. KT88 do sound a little different than the 6L6's in my AD but otherwise it should sound quite the same. mk3 has more gain since it has on ECC83 gain stage more.
Best amp I have heard is the EBS Fafner II with Marcus Miller playing a smaller venue.
1st place,,,,Hiwatt. 2nd place...JCM800
+Evoken13 They are both damn good amps for recording!
+Evoken13
Exactly my choice as well.....
My choices as well but I have the JCM800 fist and Hiwatt second.
Orange all the Life!!!
Hiwatt and JCM 800 for me!
(1) EBS (2) Hiwatt sound the best to me.
Heart and the Orange tickle my fancy
Clean: 1 - Hiwatt, 2 - Marshall JCM 800
Dirty: 1 - Hiwatt, 2 - Sound City
which amp is which? here's the answer to that (or scroll to 9min 49 sec): Bass amp comparison.
No Soldano?
I don't have one... sorry
I didn't know marshall had bass heads?
The Marshall JCM 800 is from 1986 not 1992.
i liked #2 (marshall JCM800) and #5 (orange AD140B) the most. I record mostly punk and metal. #4 would be good for stoner/doom etc.
AD140B is a great punk rock amp!
EBS and Orange for me!
Clean amp (amp 1) = EBS T90 and dirt amp (amp 5) = Orange AD140B
1 2 and 6 are nice for most applications but the orange wins for the metals
1,4 and 6
I'll keep that in mind. Thou I've really liked those RFT's. But on the other hand the Hiwatt could have more character.
Riff 1(clean): 1,4 & 6. Riff 2(clean): 1,2,4,6. Riff 1 (dirty): 6. Riff 2 (dirty): 1,4,5 & 6.
I actually liked the sound of the Sound City the best, Orange sounded way too trebly.
+GIGeorge23 Orange has quite good EQ. But the pots centered sound is really trebly, that's true. Maybe I could try some other preamp tubes one day.
The ebs sounded the best to me
2:06, 2:34, 2:53, 3:13, 3:33, 3:53
4:15, 4:33, 4:52, 5:11, 5:29, 5:46
1. Not bad, but maybe too much upper mid emphasis
2. Pretty good
3. Way too nasal and farty
4. Similar to 3 but less dramatic
5. Far too mid focused
6. Favorite in blind
