Take Action for the Environment in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

  • Which town in Africa, adjacent to a World Wonder, is surrounded entirely by National Parks land and regularly has elephants and warthogs roaming the main street? The answer (of course) is the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
To the 40,000 or so people living there, the close proximity to nature in Victoria Falls is part of their daily lives. But, to the several hundred thousand tourists who visit every year, this is an extraordinary place, unlike any other in the world, where raw nature and modern, urban life intersect.
Looking after our environment is always important. But when you're a tourist town, whose livelihood depends on a healthy environment, it becomes ESPECIALLY important. On a recent visit, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) gave a heartfelt appeal to the people of Victoria Falls to work together to protect this environment and, by extension, their own jobs and livelihoods.

Thank you for fighting for the earth , we do ALL need to work for this. PLEASE make a short video clip for whatsapp , as its much easier to share simple, short videos to create awareness (30 seconds). And keep it up

I would be curious what is Guy's take on the proposed Batoka Gorge Dam.

Good question. I'm not anti development per se. My personal creed is that one shouldn't criticise unless one has a better idea. In the case of Batoka Gorge dam, and given the desperate need in Zimbabwe for alternative energy sources to coal, I can't offer a better plan. I'm sad that the ever-growing human population of Zimbabwe will necessitate the construction of yet another dam in this magnificent river, but I don't have any magic alternative solutions. And, all things considered, the environmental damage that will be inflicted in the construction of this dam is very very substantially less than was inflicted when Kariba, Tokwe-Mukosi, Mutirikwi and the latest Gwayi-Shangani dam were/are being built.

Very well presented Gus, great message.
As you said we in the tourism industry all want it to grow and therefore to squash development is counterproductive, however this development needs to be in a sustainable, ecofriendly way. Preserving and protecting the natural resources that we all love.
