Why Can We Regrow A Liver (But Not A Limb)?

  • Unlike lizards, humans can’t regrow limbs. But we can kinda-sorta regenerate our livers. Ceri, an undergrad in Biology and Comparative Media Studies at MIT, explains how and why.

    Wouldn’t you need an ‘amniotic sac’, with stem cells systematic to the organ your trying to clone?

  • @ryarod
    @ryarod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This might draw a little controversy, but: Why not just artificially conceive a human zygote, extract the pluripotent stem cells, and inject them into an injured patient?
    Whether or not the adult human body even knows what to do with the pluripotent stem cells would be its own major question- and/or group of questions- to answer, and a worthy one to pursue in my opinion.

    • @maniacalcactus4705
      @maniacalcactus4705 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ruturaj Gole I believe that it is possible to preserve pluripotent stem cells. However, ethical concerns have been raised because of an embryo's inability to stop this procedure. The most likely way that we will be able to grow limbs is by growing stem cells artificially.

    We regenerate skin, which is our largest organ. We can also regenerate our ribs, since God needed Adam's rib to create Eve.

    • @Dee-bg5qy
      @Dee-bg5qy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MEME MAN We can. Doctors have proven this via stemcell research. One of most potent areas for stem cells is the rib. If cut correctly in order to extract stem cells the rib will grow back.

    • @Dee-bg5qy
      @Dee-bg5qy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MEME MAN That's fair. If I say something I need to be willing to support it. Here you go.

      Please respond after reading to confirm, in order for everyone reading this after us can confirm that you received what you asked.

    • @Dee-bg5qy
      @Dee-bg5qy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MEME MAN This sounds like semantics. A piece of rib "is" still a rib, is it not? Furthermore, Moses wrote Genesis 3,900 years ago, meanwhile USC is just now discovering this reality in 2014. I'm going to conclude that the bible knows more about this than institutions that are just now discovering the basics of what was written 3,900 years ago. Think about it, the same story also said that God put a "great sleep" over Adam. That also sounded pretty ridiculous to folks until medical anesthesia was discovered in the 1840's. Maybe the doctors are the novices here...did you ever consider that? Maybe the doctors are the one's who don't know enough at this point. God isn't verifying the Doctor's, but the Doctor's verifying God.

    • @Dee-bg5qy
      @Dee-bg5qy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MEME MAN (That's like saying a coma is the same as death.) I doubt comparing a rib to rib is the same as comparing long duration of unconciousness to death, as they are not the same. This is why trying to respond to something like "show me actual proof that God exists", when you're engaging in conversation where samantics are used with such determination in an effort to avoid admission that the medical field has proven what a book 3,900 year old has written in it would be futile on my part. The irony here isnt even the rib, its the fact that God took the rib to create woman, and doctors today take the rib in order to extract stem cells in an effort to grow limbs, once again showing that this 3,900 year old book knew something that we're just now beginning to understand. So it's crystal clear to me that I cant show proof of God to anyone who can't even see this connection...or dont want to see this connection, whatever is the most accurate statement.

    • @Dee-bg5qy
      @Dee-bg5qy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MEME MAN (that would explain a lot of ancient inventions and fast evolution of technology.) Or maybe your theory is your way of denying God.

    As mind blowing as it may be, to the unbelievers, I believe that you can heal to the level that you believe. As in 'Biology of Belief'... Lizards were not told by 'doctors' that they couldn't heal.
