    My great grandfather fought in the Boer War in South Africa. We still have his cavalry pistol and his gold pocket watch. He suffered from PTSD after coming home to Canada after the war and became an alcoholic; it was a brutal fight.

      My great grandfather fought against yours. Yes indeed, terrible war, especially considering the British resorted to interning women and children in concentration camps in order to stop the Boer men from fighting. Not that your great grandfather had any say in that, but if he was aware it would not have helped his psychological state.

      My Great-Grandfather was also in the Second Boer War and was at the Defence of Ladysmith. He had to eat rats while under siege and killed Boers in close combat. Sounded like a rough time from the stories.

    My Paternal Great Great Grandfather named Albert Edward Sugg was born in January 1880 in east London. He was a Bare-knuckle boxing from the age off 16. He joined the Royal Navy in 1900 aged 20. He married my great great grandmother in 1905 and had my great grandfather named Charles Sugg in 1910 who was also born in east London. In the Great War he served in the Battle of Jutland. He died in 1960 in my home town in Essex.

It's the same the world over however, England, France, USA and even Russia would have been infinitely more beautiful and stable had the blood letting of the first and second world wars not depleted us of the empire and Germany and France of it's confidence and manpower.

    • @FinDan07
      @FinDan07 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What’s impressive about that? Many large empires were connected by sea, as land travel was difficult before railroads and highways.

    • @andersonandrighi4539
      @andersonandrighi4539 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@FinDan07 Not really. All the largest empires on earth were contiguous land. The Mongol Empire was connected first by land. So was most of the Roman Empire. The colonial empire of Portugal and Spain were connected by land. What is now North, Central, The Caribean, and South America is mostly connected by land. The British conquered via shore, they created the idea of modern India and Pakistan.
      As a side note, Alexander the Great and the Mongols were not able to conquer India. I'm not advocating for empires, but look at how complex it was to create and control such vast lands. If the British did not control sea like they did they would be in the same position as Portugal. Who had an Empire, but was dependent of a single colony. To an extent I'm betting you hear only about Brazil and never about Portugal.

    • @andersonandrighi4539
      @andersonandrighi4539 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @UCLpLyRE6TIdyQ178WIx0mIw because India is right next to South Africa which makes it easy to get to Australia. Contiguous land was not something that the British had. All other colonial powers had a more contiguous territory to administer

    • @varana
      @varana 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@andersonandrighi4539 That said, the Roman Empire grew as large as it did over the sea. That all parts were connected, was in many cases just mopping up at later stages.
      The Mediterranean was the important "road" that held the provinces of the Empire together. You didn't go to Carthage all the way around the sea; you travelled by ship. The Dalmatian coast technically provided a land bridge from Italy to Greece; you _could_ march to Egypt on land (not counting the Bosporus) - no-one used either of that. Rome's first province was an island (Sicily), Rome's first possession in Asia (western Asia Minor around Pergamon) was not connected via land to any other Roman territory; Carthage was conquered by ship.

    • @FinDan07
      @FinDan07 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Anderson Andrighi Out of all the empires you listed, only the Mongolian empire was not a maritime one where seas played a huge role. How exactly were the colonial empires of portugal and spain connected by land? Last i checked there’s no land connection between south america and africa. Darien gap divides the americas as well. Caribbean is not connected by land. I have no idea what argument you were trying to make there, if anything you just confirmed what i said? The atlantic divides portugal and brazil as well? I literallly have no clue what you’re aiming to prove. Britain would be in the same position as portugal? Last I checked the british empire no longer exists. And I’d say India was to Britain similar in importance as Brazil was to Portugal, and heck many in India speak english nowadays and India is surpassing Britain as an economy.

      If the Germans had captured Paris then the French possibility had surrendered and without Frans and without a land based way to Europe then the Entent wold have to have a truce.
      This wold not though (in my point of view) have been a total capitulation and the peace treaties wold nod dismantle all of the French and British empires, instead it wold have been a peace treaty that both powers wold get and lose som land (in my point of view)
      Thank Indie for taking the time to respond to my comment and I thought that it was a weird idea and a Chanel with almost 1 million subs wold probably never care to answer my question.

I found out about your channel not from TH-cam recommendation, but instead from a local newspaper of my hometown, Jakarta. There was an article about the 100 years commemoration of WW1. There, they mention (in all caps with your logo covering 1/4 of the article) a youtube channel that specifically tells the history of The Great War on a weekly basis. During lunchtime on the same day I found you guys on youtube and started watching your videos..until now. I also subscribed and watch all your other videos from different channel that you guys made.
