I’d love to ride a TT bike. But they’re just way more expensive than road bikes. A good road bike itself is already expensive. Also if you’re going to ride TT. It’s mandatory that you must look the part for aero gains. Which means you need a skin suit and a TT helmet. Which also don’t comes cheap. Don’t even get started with optimizing your TT bike with marginal gain upgrades. A new carbon wheel set could easily cost as much as a new bike.
@@iMadrid11 What you have said is incorrect Chris. You don't need a TT bike. You can do one on a normal road bike. You are testing yourself, not trying to win the race. Wear a tight fitting top and that will gain you more aero advantage than a TT bike. You can also buy some cheap aero bars (Triathlon bars) that will fit onto the cross bar of a road bike. Loads on ebay for less than £50. If you get the bug you can upgrade in the years to come. I would say 80% of people do their first TT's either on road bikes or a road bike with bolt on aero bars. Go for it.

@@zambokid89 The difference between tubeless and clincher/latex is minimal but latex tubes don't offer the same puncture protection. With clincher/butyl, I think there is defenitly a difference in R.R. but it's a bit more puncture resistant. :) Tubeless get you all the pros without the cons but are a bit messier to deal with.

This is amazing... Seeing Ollie out of character and being sensible! Manon could've saved 20 watts if she didn't burn so many calories putting her sun glasses on and off 600 times before starting the race.
I love the GTN and GCN collaboration. I'm not a triathlete, so I only got introduced to Heather of GTN when Manon challenged her to Cyclist vs Runner calorie challenge a few months ago. So, I've been binge-watching Heather GTN videos. About 2 years ago there was a GTN 15 Minute HIIT workout with Heather and Hank. So, you want to watch Hank suffer, watch this video. At one point Heather says: "..3-2-1. Go to the end. Unlike James. We don't want any slackers...". Poor Hank, she literally killed him. By the way, I'm subscribed to GCN+ just to see Hank suffer more. I am not disappointed!!!
American here, I completely agree. Keep using the metric system. It just makes more sense. The only thing I prefer from standard of metric is Fahrenheit when discussing weather. It was quite literally designed to measure what we perceive as cold to be 0 and hot to be 100. That's the only thing I actually prefer.

I thought Heather had it when she brought out the TT bike and helmet, and then Manon goes and brings out the Wattage Bazooka. Holy smokes can she throw down the power. I knew she was fast, but still. Wowzer.
Love these challenges and insights. Even though 10 seconds off, it realky shows how much the aero additions help when you've not got the same power output.
What an absolute joy to see two fantastic athletes, in their respective fields, perform for us and to keep it all so friendly and amiable, a genuine video of how sport should be, something we should all respect. Did I see horns appear on Manon’s forehead once she went into race mode, I think I did!

The GCN one was pure entertainment it didn't really aim to inform but I think they were genuinely surprised that Si kept winning so I guess we still learned something.

It's very reassuring to know that I'm not that bad of a female cycling enthusiast myself! :) I'm mid 40's using a fairly cheap 11kg bike in a very warm and humid tropical country...and I've done a 12km ride at an ave speed of 39km/hr a few months ago USING A GRAVEL BIKE (on the road)...maybe I should get me a real road bike then!

Since air resistance increases with the square of the speed, I guess another option would be a fast linear long course with a slight downhill slope. A longer course and tri-suit may do the trick though.
After more than 7 years I still consider myself as a beginner, but what I am good at is riding in an aggressive position for several hours and in my opinion this brings the greatest gain in speed. Because of the bike boom, all the workshops are closed and I have to do all the maintenance myself... that's why my main training machine is a entry-level Merida Scultura 100 with Claris R2000 8-speed... I have put some 43 mm mid-depth rims on it together with 25 mm Conti GP 5000, a narrower handlebar, 7.5 cm saddle to bar drop and as soon as I go over 28 km/h, I ride in the drops. On my main route there is a steady -2% gradient over 30 km, which means that on the way back I can constantly ride at 45 km/h with my setup and that feels great. Even on my commuter I ride in the same position with a slammed -17 degree 105 mm stem, only then with a messenger backpack, just to get used to the position and it works for me.
The rematch should be on Manon speciality track sprinting. If the triatholete had things her way on the first event then it's only fair to reverse things in the rematch.

What a cracking match-up. Two great presenters who both, politely, wanted to smash the other one! I love Heather, but as soon as Manon’s name was mentioned, I knew the result... and then the bikes came into play and I had to reassess. Blooming close race. Can’t wait for the summer rematch now
One thing that stood out to me was Heather's cadence looked quite low. TT's on flats are about endurance so recruiting type II fibers would help stave off fatigue. Then again, some people get by with low cadence but maybe try some speed skills workouts to see if it helps add some watts.
Oh how I long to race against other people after watching this. It would be nice to see you two switch bikes and do again just to set the number. Fantastic work. I'm going riding now.
I am not sure Ollie's advice really helped that much, to him 20W extra against the headwind might be reasonably, but to some triathletes I know, it would be an all-out sprint :D I beginning to see where this is going though. Manon being caught exercising without a bicycle, fraternising with Heather, and not long ago slipping out that the even preferred swimming when at hotels which probably have an almost usable exercise bike from the 70's hidden in the basement. Suspicious, very suspicious. But I do feel for Heather on that hill. It not necessarily the 0.3% themselves, but how the suddenly jump on you within only a few hundred meters, and then have the audacity to do it again on the next lap.
Just for perspective, I consider myself fairly fit casual runner and cyclist, and I'm knackered putting out 90-100 watts over 30 minutes. Hearing 260 Watts really does deserve some respect!
if I may"correct" the perspective a little bit. I, a woman, just started cycling a couple of months ago and can hold 115 W quiet easily for about two hours. Never did a 20 min Test, but I think I could hold about 200 W
@@finestein1931 Maybe Strava wasn't giuving me accurate power estimates. I mainly run, so fitness wise my times are 20:21 for 5k, 46:59 for 10km and 1h 44min for the half marathon. I'll get a power metre and re check the bike in case Strava is way out
100 watts is not that hard. If you really want to know your power, you need a power meter. Strava is not that close to being right from what I have seen.
