i think another big reason why it did so well was its accuracy on the figure skating side of it, which made it popular with professionals and skating fans. it had world-class figure skaters tweeting about it, johnny weir (who victor's partially inspired by) doing a panel at crunchyroll expo, and music from it skated to at the 2018 winter olympics. so while definitely a major reason was the queer rep, it also had a lot of people (who wouldn't usually watch sports anime, or anime at all) watching it for the skating. (also side note: it was the grand prix final that victor was coaching yuri for, not the winter olympics)
