  • This video is a re-upload from Saturday, see bottom of description for details.
    Big thanks to NIP Embedded Systems for sending in this unit, there was a lot of stuff to learn about it that I couldn't fit into a single video. The more I tinker with it, the more stuff I find that I can do with it, and the better my understanding gets.
    After shooting this review I had a MacBook Pro in with a suspected failed battery - the battery is glued in, so it's not a trivial matter to swap it out for test. Plug in the Battery Analyzer, and bam, now I can check it in-situ before I go to the hassle of removing it.

    I posted this on Saturday, but de-listed it after receiving an alarming phone call about the device.
    However, after taking the concerns into consideration, I concluded that one bad experience doesn't make this a bad product. The issues that I'd been told about have been resolved in the latest hardware revision featured in the video, and I'm satisfied that there's no cause for concern.

      Tool and analyzer are lifetime/unlimited.
      There is an option for chip programming (not all need it) which is not free.
      It is clearly presented on the website. There is nothing else cheaper and better, it’s not like you have many to choose from.

    UPDATE: Now NLBA comes with 10 FREE Days for Reset/Unlock/Repair option. Easy to recover the investment. For existing customers, 10 FREE Days for Reset Option can be offered upon request.
    Another great review. You explained very well the features of this device. I would like to add some more info to avoid any confusions:
    If the battery is in Lock state it cannot be "Revived". If a battery has bad cells then nothing in the world can "repair" the battery.
    Steps to repair a battery:
    1. Detect the defect (in many cases it is due to over discharged cells) -> NLBA can do it
    2. Fix the defect by replacing the cells or bring all cells to the same voltage.
    3. Reset/Reprogram the chip to clear the errors (NLBA for the moment supports BQ8030 chip reset and I will add more chips soon). This step is very difficult because all chips are secured. Latest chips have even SHA256 bit.
    4. Analyze the cells voltages by measuring the internal resistance and tracking the voltage under load -> NLBA can do it.

You don't need lots of laptops to test the batteries. Just one NLBA and you are done. I don’t think this product is useful “to us” in its current form. But due to its low cost, I bought one anyway, in hopes it’s future development will yield better capabilities “for us”. I think this device would sell like crazy, if it could write to internal controllers. Replacing cells and unlocking the chip, would be a HUGE game changer. Without that, it’s just a glorified reporting machine IMHO. I’m with Graham, if a battery is bad with a locked chip, why bother. Nothing this device can do. It’s cheaper and less of a headache to just buy new $20-$30 batteries.

      There are 2-3 softwares (just software) in the world that could reset/reprogram the chip. They cost up to $1000 per year. Most of the chips are very well secured, that's why the price is high. I will add more chips soon for affordable prices.

    In playbook days when you discharged it Right down and it refused to charge even leaving it plugged in overnight a trick called stack charging got the battery up to the minimum enough to charge !basically you plugged in the charger and then immediately out a score or so of times if nothing, you repeated it. It works by putting in a tiny amount of charge at a time until the control board wakes up and charges normally.
    Never chuck dead battery packs out its generally a dead cell the rest maybe fine ,i power all my torches with old laptop batteries you just have to use a small pcb charge circuit (from ebay) to safely charge them as the batteries themselves do not have built in protection circuits or a decent charger with overheat protection as bad ones heat up fast!

The latest software version supports the Reset/Reprogram feature for the BQ8030 chip with Sanyo firmware and soon more and more chips will be added.

    Hi to everyone! I would like to thank the person who design and develop this NLBA device. There is a loot of good batteries out there those manufacturers are locking just to make people spend money! Let us be honest if any of us peasants would do such thing we would go to jail! This Analyser have helped me sort through my battery stock. Many of them turn out to be in great shape. I had completely unresponsive batteries that I was able to awake, charge, grade and I learned that battery that was made in 2008 have 89% life in it and the cells are great having only 22 ohms of resistance…. CRAZY. I think this is so far the best device I bought this year a specially that it was not too expensive. This will be handy every day in my line of business as I resell laptop parts! Thank you! I have no problem recommending that to other people who have knowledge and a bit of common sense…. This will not repair any bad cells as this is impossible - bad cell needs to be replaced but it will do miracles when it comes to good cells that was blocked by so called protection! Anyone who deals with laptops or other electronics that use this type of battery should have this on hand! Period! I only hope that it will be constantly developed, that owner will take on board users suggestions as I bet there will be many and that we can save at least 50% of them batteries going to waist and destroying our planet! Once again Thank YOU!

    Nice bit of kit, but the biggest problem I have found with laptop batteries is when the control chip renders the whole battery faulty locking it from being used ever again. To reset the safety features of overly discharged batteries, for possible recovery, one must subscribe to their error clearing software to the tune of $200- a year..... • @nipembedded9976
      @nipembedded9976 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are some batteries that can take some current but most of them not. For example Dell uses a special command to activate the charging MOSfet, same for discharging. The charging procedure is complex and must be done according to the smart battery charger standard. For example you must read the temperature sensor, you need to charge the battery with Pre Charge current first then to switch to constant current and after that to Constant Voltage. Also some alarms must be monitored. Anytime a failure is detected you must disconnect the power. Using all these information you could charge a battery let's say to about 80-90% but from 90% to 100% it is more difficult because some batteries require Pulse Charging like PWM other require some sleep periods and so on. It is different from brand to brand.

    Does the chip inside the laptop battery handle cell balancing? On rc lipo batteries you have a separate balance lead in addition to the power leads that connects on to the smart charger. I wouldnt force charge a battery and leave it unattended otherwise you could come back to a fire

    • @nipembedded9976
      @nipembedded9976 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, the chip inside the battery is responsible for balancing, monitoring the temperature, tracking the capacity and many many other things. Most batteries have an internal let's say "programmable fuse" which could be burned by the chip in case a failure is detected, so no input/output current.

      After replacing the cells you have to reset the chip. At the moment BQ8030 Sanyo chip can be reset. Soon more chips will be added. The device cannot check if the motherboard is charging properly, but it can check if the battery is working properly so you can deduct if the motherboard is good or not.

      Generally speaking you need to communicate with the battery's BMS (Battery Management System) to charge it. Some badly made batteries will take a charge regardless of the BMS status, but it's not the norm.
      The advantage of this system is easy access to the statistics int he BMS though, health, cell balance, etc, which let you make a judgement call on if the battery is any good or spent.

      The battery chip requests how it must be charged, what current and what voltage. Charging a laptop battery directly using a lab power supply could lock the chip. More, Dell laptop batteries will not charge without specific data communication.

    Will it work ?

    • @nipembedded9976
      @nipembedded9976 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are 2 very important aspects you need to take in account:
      1. You need to have a solution to reset that chip (its errors internally to make it working again)
      2. For a chemistry and capacity different the original you need to change many other parameters to make the firmware working properly. It's possible but it needs to be done by an expert. A better idea is to send the battery to a specialized repair shop because they have the required tools and they can replace the old cells with new cells higher capacity. There is only one shop in Romania that can do it.

    My macbook air (late 2010) had no charge (charger broken and didn't need the laptop) and sat without charge in it for around 9 months (i think, or longer). To my surprise it did charge up all on it's own (incredibly slowly at first... macos said 0% for about an hour..).
    The large internal resistance probably explains why i've got an old laptop, and under heavy CPU load at below 80% battery, it'll just cut out.. it's an old cheap replacement.. likely voltage droops under heavy load below minimum cutoff.

    • @nipembedded9976
      @nipembedded9976 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is usually happening when the FCC (Full Charge Capacity) parameter does not reflect the current state of the cells. You kept the battery 9 months, the state of the cells decreased due to their chemistry behaviour in time but the microcontroller has the old information about the cells state. One option would be to charge the battery 100% in the laptop then discharge it to 0% then back to 100% in order to update the FCC. Some batteries firmware does not allow a difference in calibration cycle more than 10% of the original FCC.

    The one thing that was not brought up in this video is the perspective of battery building and repairs. The controller in the battery is pre-programmed at the factory, and it follows the life of the original cells. However, when you go into the battery and replace a cell, the controller must be re-programmed. Even worse, if you do a total rebuild of a battery for, example a laptop where the battery is no longer available, a full re-programming of controller for the newly replaced cells is necessary. Some people think that, for example cell two is bad, I can just go in there with a spot welder and replace the battery, and the controller will automatically recognize it. No, it won't, and you need a tool like the NLBA1 to perform a full re-programming of the controller. So yes, this might not be as valuable in a PC repair shop, as most repairs are just part swaps. But if your business is building custom batteries, or re-building batteries for older laptops, then this is a killer tool to have.

      The two concerns that I'd been told about were A) Quality control, a previous revision had a possibly faulty batch of power transistors that could go bang. These have been replaced, and a bigger cooling fan fitted. Additionally, better PSUs are included now, as seen by my one having a Delta Electronics unit.
      B) Apparently the design was lifted from Texas Instruments' Fuel Gauge technology. However, this Fuel Gauge tech is a development kit that is fully intended to be developed into an end-user product like this, so I see no issue at all.
      The chap I spoke to had encountered a faulty unit, and sometimes customer service encounters go wrong. This was one of those times. It happens, but it doesn't automatically mean that the product is fundamentally bad.
