I think Bal is very ambitious and that’s a good thing. I’m really good in sales but I didn’t start out that way! I was nervous and awkward in the beginning. Watching him I wished I could’ve reached through the TV and given him some tips! Out in the town center get on that bull horn and be excited! Have a twinkle in your eye, a bounce in your step! “Hello ladies and gentlemen, since we are all out here in the rain come on over and try some free CUISINE (not FREE FOOD) from the Fusion restaurant!” Ask for an email address when they come to get a sample, the worst they can say is no! Then at least you can reach back out to the people who’s addresses you did get and entice them to come in!
From experience I can tell you that it is possible to overcome shyness about speaking. Bal can do it with practice. When you are nervous and begin to stutter, slow down - no one is going anywhere if they have come to find out what you have to offer. Speak from the heart instead of trying to memorize a speech. Are you happy to see them? Tell them. Are you excited to show your guests what you have to offer? Smile and say so. Guests will warm to you and you will begin to enjoy speaking. You go Bal!
You will get there Bal!!!! Don't let anything put you off!! Try to relax a little. I will be praying for you to be successful all the way from Barbados, West Indies Bal. Alex is very good. NEVER GIVE UP. You will come out shining. Make your your books balance and that you are making some profit. Bless

Being Cocky my friend will not take you anywhere... As for your Alex, when someone has some sort of medical issue (in this case, speech), we do NOT put them under the spotlight & also when he was doing his staff meeting, you were doing faces & your body language is NOT professional... Hello Alex. As you have indicated, a certain salesmanship is needed to promote any business. Along with a welcomg smile and genuine interest in your guests. Some people have that innate quality!
This show highlights so many people who step into a hospitality business without ever having worked in one. All he needs is to practice basic friendliness, show some excitement, verve, pride and the desire to please. He is too stiff. Act how you would want to be treated without coming off as a phony. He could use a course in interpersonal communication.
Agree. It is very difficult to do promotion if you are shy which Bal obviously is. But he did his best and he will relax with practice if he keeps his hand in it.
@@pamelahaze3211 Me too! I threw up that color after my gallbladder operation! Incredibly bad choice, not to mention extremely unflattering to the complexion so people will look sick under the lights in that room. A paler yellow with blush tones or a rose color or red - warm colors that bring out the pink tones under the skin is flattering. Colors that feel like firelight give a glow to the skin and make people look their most attractive. Never green or bile color. Incredibly bad choice. It's been proven that people feel less well and easily can be persuaded that they might be ill in rooms that give a yellow or greenish cast to the skin as that dining room does.
selling is not my strong point but I can see that selling is about meeting a need, emotional or material. To be successful it should be based upon caring about what the other person needs not what the seller needs.
I see Bal as really nervous in public speaking which i wish he'd of been honest with himself and said instead of saying hes this "amazing salesman". It's clear from the phonecall from that person he called he's also quick to anger which clearly comes from his anxiety. Having thought about it he borrowed £600,000 then spending £150,000 on refurbishments not including the cost of the property ide say he was left with about £100-150000. He needs a manager with face to face confidence to run the day to day.
He won't pay for that! And if he does, he'll jack up the prices so high it will bankrupt him faster than the Flash running around the Wembley Arena 30×'s!

I think he was so terribly nervous and Alex has no idea how to guide or inspire someone of his temperament. He was probably just focused so much on not wetting himself that he made a mistake.
Perhaps instead of all the "salesman" books he has read and is desperately trying to follow, first try smiling, being welcoming, and gracious. Learn diplomatic phrases, be genial, this isn’t high pressure, must close sales. Welcome the ladies, thank them for giving you a chance, have a glass of champagne from the bar to take on the tour, do a tour, and our "best kept secret is our restaurant". Serve a cup of tea, have some samples and snackies. Ask about their business, their needs for their customers, their opinions. Ask how he can help them. Listen. Again, thank them when they leave. Send a free drink certificate for them and their significant other, as a thank you. Charm After the big 100 person relaunch, every guest should get a thank you letter with 3 brochures for the hotel, 3 for the restaurant and 3 of his business cards.
The charming British quality of self-deprecation is lost on Bal. He needs some "charm school" instruction along with the practical function Alex is trying to teach him. Practically a recluse, hiding in his own hotel, he needs to meet and greet as well as get out and flog the hotel accommodations and services, on a regular basis. Perhaps, a radio campaign or local t.v. spots. Clips of happy diners and people checking in and out...anything to get images out there to the public! Just don't let him do the pitching - he's a TERRIBLE speaker! Can't get through a sentence without stumbling and stammering.
Oh Bless.. that was a bit difficult to watch. But good for him for giving it a go. He just needed a good mentor and some confidence. Hope he was successful in life.
Public speaking is far from my superpower, such an advantage for any business person to be able to speak well and with confidence to staff, customers and others in the business community.. hopefully warmth and integrity, a winning smile can make up for it if this skill is lacking..
Dont like the colour in the restaurant, First thing you do when you buy a Hotel you say how can i market this, you need the personality firstly,he should hire a Manager with personality to do this for him, The rooms are very standard, Alex gracious as always,
I find the avocado green paint in the restaurant quite nauseating. Even the nondescript gray shades Alex often favours would be better than that green.
@@angelbulldog4934 I agree with you: I don't like the gray either, but I really hate this shade of green. I merely make a comparison between two poor choices. I've watched many episodes of The Hotel Inspector, and I have liked very few of the colour schemes, unfortunately.
It's far from avocado, more like a very popular spring green, a variety of chartreuse. I think it does what she wanted it to do, still using the old furniture.
Telling someone they’re lousy doesn’t solve the problem. Bal needs to attend Toastmasters, a public speaker organization. There should be something similar - if not identical - in the UK.
He could use an extroverted business partner who has hotel sales experience. Bonus if they pay attention to detail and are service-oriented. I admire his drive and confidence, but I think Bal should sell and find a job managing a hotel or perhaps work at a restaurant and then open his own because he seems to have an eye for good food.
@@steveroperfilms Apparently, he's got two fabulous chefs in his employ; they are gold! I've no doubt the food is good, but if I had stayed there before or after Alex with no knowledge of Alex I would have graded the food in that restaurant as equal to the quality of the rooms. That's the point here. The rooms negate any chance for the restaurant to shine. Got it?
Have a look at that yellow paper stuffed in the wall near the beginning of the video. I’m pretty sure that looks like it’s being pulled back in from the other side!! Spooky. !,
When I woke up from gall bladder surgery, coming out of anaesthesia I vomited up a foul liquid the same color as Alex painted the restaurant walls. Absolutely nobody's complexion will be flattered with that color reflected onto their faces. People will look like they've got jaundice. Ghastly choice.
I love Alex Polizzi and I don't want to put shadow on her experties. But. Wich one of Alex Polizzi's friends personality matches the color she put on the dining room walls? My god. The color is there and it's everywhere. I would feel like the walls are about to attack if I would sit there trying to enjoy my meal. Lets hope Bal's repainting it soon or he'll have to provide horse blinders with every dish. 😳😱😵💫😱😳🤣
Pretty sure to have a fusion restaurant you need to do more than just put the word fusion in the name. He talks a big game but ultimately he's a sad, clueless attempt at being something "boutique" and "up market"
I give Bal A for effort! I especially like that he believes in himself--that's a positive stance that will take him far. He's new at this game, yes, but as time goes on, what Alex did for him should jump start him into the next phase and I'm expecting success from this venture! I'd definitely visit should we ever visit Rugby!
He's a nice guy and his heart is in the right place. The hotel is nice and clean and compared to most on this program pretty good. No reason why people would not want to stay there and it seems like the chefs are above average and competent.
If the restaurant is your important feature, then feed people. The two women should have been invited for a meal. And consider a few sessions with an acting coach. Teach people like him to play the role of a warm, welcoming host.

Public speaking is far from my superpower, such an advantage for any business person to be able to speak well and with confidence to staff, customers and others in the business community.. hopefully warmth and integrity, a winning smile can make up for it if this skill is lacking..
Dont like the colour in the restaurant,
First thing you do when you buy a Hotel you say how can i market this, you need the personality firstly,he should hire a Manager with personality to do this for him,
The rooms are very standard,
Alex gracious as always,
Which hotel do you own, Cathy?
Notice how they show Alex walking up to a woman asking her if she wants to try some free food, but dont show the woman saying yes or eating anything.😂
ONE thing I know about me is. I AM NOT a salesperson
So I won't be doing any of this. Not even with Alex 😐🙄
You probably also don't own a 30 room hotel in dire need of saving 😅😂😂😂
I find the avocado green paint in the restaurant quite nauseating. Even the nondescript gray shades Alex often favours would be better than that green.
Not for all of us. I LOATHE grey.
@@angelbulldog4934 I agree with you: I don't like the gray either, but I really hate this shade of green. I merely make a comparison between two poor choices. I've watched many episodes of The Hotel Inspector, and I have liked very few of the colour schemes, unfortunately.
@davidhaley8542
Agree - it's not just that I don't care for her color choices - they also seem like they'll become outdated very rapidly
It's far from avocado, more like a very popular spring green, a variety of chartreuse. I think it does what she wanted it to do, still using the old furniture.
Poor guy he must first crawl then walk and then run. This doesn't happen overnight to earn money. Goodluck poor guy got an attitude
Telling someone they’re lousy doesn’t solve the problem. Bal needs to attend Toastmasters, a public speaker organization. There should be something similar - if not identical - in the UK.
He may "want it all" but he needs to learn and work at it. He is tunnell visioned.
Wow Rugby is never mentioned on TV ! I went to school down the road from that hotel
cant imagine alex polizzi swanning around the clock towers x
We didn't even know such a place even existed! Thought it was a rough sport.
Is the place still open?
@@hopeliveshere1121 He sold it 1.5 yr ago. New owner.
@@sebastian0107 hehe the rough sport was invented there and was named after the town
Del Boy must have sold them the paint?
My favourite episode 😅
Fab colors in the restaurant! Good luck Bal. I wish you every success.
American would love this hotel, look at the portion of that food LOL
Slop
Still open as of today.
Of all the colors to choose. The new color in the dining room...ugh! 😮🤦🏼♀️
This was 12 yrs ago; he sold the place, 1.5 yrs ago.
Christ I hope this was the nighties, that lime green is unforgivable
Not sure about that color in the restaurant... Maybe it looks better in person.
Balancing the books for one guest😂😂😂😂😂
8:11 I’ve even noticed a Salvation Army sign on the front of the “hotel” - what’s that all about?
14 hour days still after 23 years sounds insane
The furniture in the bar is too dark which makes it look old fashioned. Poor fellow, he does need to do a short public speaking course.
Girl at 19:56 even knocks Alex into 2nd place 😍
no way
Alex wants a bottle of wine out of 1 grape.
I wonder what happened to him. Hopefully he found something to be better at.
If i staid there i would most certainly not eat there judging by the state of the rooms!
That was my thought; low quality in the rooms is one thing, but low quality food is, for me, a no-no.
@@virginiamoss7045 I heard Alex say the food was really good, as did the people who tried it.
Got it?
@@virginiamoss7045 No! The quality of the food has nothing to do with the quality of the rooms, and the rooms were being upgraded. Got it?
@@virginiamoss7045but the food was very good, there was no doubt about that, it was the selling point...
Bal's got great skin ...
😂
I love Alex Polizzi and I don't want to put shadow on her experties. But. Wich one of Alex Polizzi's friends personality matches the color she put on the dining room walls? My god. The color is there and it's everywhere. I would feel like the walls are about to attack if I would sit there trying to enjoy my meal. Lets hope Bal's repainting it soon or he'll have to provide horse blinders with every dish. 😳😱😵💫😱😳🤣
I love Alex and the program but this guy has the personality of a teaspoon 😩
I am losing the will to live
🤣🤣🤣
Hate hate hate the yellow paint. Yuck.
Pretty sure to have a fusion restaurant you need to do more than just put the word fusion in the name. He talks a big game but ultimately he's a sad, clueless attempt at being something "boutique" and "up market"
Im sorry but that lime green is horrendous. Somtimes less is more 🤢
The noughties have a lot to answer for
I give Bal A for effort!
Yes, a small tasting menu could have been easily prepared. A few small bites, easy to taste and variety of items would have been a classy presetstikn.
His voice is so flat and he really needs to learn how to tie his tie properly.
Some people just can't; not even with training. His flat voice, I meant!
@@sebastian0107 Sadly that´s what makes him bad salesman, that boring flat voice. The stuttering has nothing to do with it, that´s something he probably can´t do anything about,.
@@BJKage Sad indeed. However, he did manage to keep his business afloat until about two years ago, then he sold it. Hope he found something that suits him better.
@@sebastian0107 That´s sad, but unfortunately it´s a bad time for hotels and restaurants in general. Here in Europe prices just are getting down like they were before the lock-down, but people are still careful. Two years ago it was really bad.
@@BJKage Tough business indeed! I always look up what became of the hotels Alex helped out; about 50% didn't make it. While watching, we're always predicting: mostly we're right.
He's so arrogant, should have stayed in the corner shop!
Best comment!! This is exactly what happens when politicians make deals behind the backs or at the expense of the citizens of their nation. They've destroyed the motel/extended stay lodging in America as well.
Very pompous
And you lot are stellar wonders no doubt 🥸
