  • In this video I am explaining the gear that will be used for measuring and how exactly I will measure things with an actual example in the video.

    Recently I've decided to learn about sound systems and your channel truly helps me a lot with all the technical stuff you share in your channel.

    Amazing project, thank you. I think some acoustic damping on the window behind the speaker may help in case you have reflections affecting the measurement.

    • @RAW-CAt

      That is what the gating is for. All reflections are being ignored by the measurement system.

    I'm literally looking at what ~3" Midrange driver to purchase for my active 3-way design ideas... maybe even a 5 1/2" or similar for my PC desk; the Silver Flute W17RC38-04 6.5" speakers are a little to big for my desk. They will be good for my car or TV lol

    Good job . There is one thing 🙃. You should measure outside on max open space to minimize reflection which you can't avoid in a room.

    • @RAW-CAt

      Well, I am avoiding the reflections using a gated measurement..

    • @Drift_Freak

      @@RAW-CAt Yes, that is a way, but there is a reason why speakers are measured in an anechoic chamber or maximum open space. 🤔

    • @RAW-CAt

      @@Drift_Freak the reason is to measure the lower frequencies accurately. I am not interested in the response of a 3in driver below 300Hz or so.

    • @disienna

      You are correct of course. However, measuring outside also increases the likelihood of random noise and makes the timing more critical and make "do overs" very common. The measurements are more easily contaminated and the amount of time it could take could be astronomical unless he could go way out in the middle of a field on a calm day. It's a lot of work. For doing this many drivers, I think he's methodology is actually extremely good and probably the most useful database available for car midrange drivers. For midrange drivers, I don't think low frequency data is all that critical. Maybe on that Dayton with the huge Xmax, but definitely not on the 2" dome.

      If there will be enough "donations", I can do a second round. If you have spare drivers lying around and don't mind shipping them that is.

    Test that microphone for max SPL level. I recommend you test with a clean low distortion speaker at maybe 150 Hz, keep the level the same and move the microphone to several different distances from the speaker to see at what SPL level the microphone distortion goes above the speaker distortion. Many of these small diaphragm microphones below $500 have very high distortion above 100 dB, so you need to keep track of the level the mic is seeing when close to the speaker.

    • @RAW-CAt

      That is a very good point. The near field measurements will be on the same level as far field, that is 90dB next to the mic. You see when I measure near field I have attenuated the signal -50dB or so. Rew software as well shows the level of the mic and I have about 20dB of headroom left👍
