    The first Elesh Norn card was printed in 2011. The first Destiny game came out in 2014. It's possible Destiny referenced Magic for Eris Morn, but not the other way.

    Something to also note about fealty. By casting the first half, you provide the enchantment some protection, because exiled cards are pretty uninteractable. Unlike say if it put it into the graveyard, where it could be hate removed, ir same in the hand.

    One thing you forgot to explain with Virtue of Loyalty is that the adventure being instant speed makes it a lot better than just getting a 2/2. In Yu-Gi-Oh terms that's a handtrap that allows you to throw a 1500 into an opponents attack (and since you can block an attacker with multiple creatures in magic this allows you to trade in situations where you otherwise would just chump block or even snipe an attacking combo piece of your opponent that attacked on a seemingly empty board (though then again attacking with combo pieces against white is hardly ever a good idea).
    So more often than not this reads as handtrap: add 1500 atk to your monster, sacrifice it at end of combat step (and potentially get a 1500/1500 creature token that changes to defense position at the end of your turn if your opponent doesn't deal enough damage to the buffed creature)

    • @YourAdHere4
      @YourAdHere4 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      the instant speed aspect also means it can be slotted into more controlling decks relatively easily. Hold up mana for interaction, if you don’t have anything to counter just flash out a 2/2 on end step (that cantrips into a wincon enchantment)

    I just wanted to say that I appreciate there being a cohesive theme in these videos, restricting yourself to a single format is much better than "is this card good in any format ever." Maybe let the guest know the cards are all in a certain standard period or pioneer or modern, and they're evaluated in that context, maybe with a quick description of what that encompasses.

    Phyrexian vindicator still isn't good in this use case, but there's one fantastically hilarious build for the card, and its in a stuffy doll-style modern/legacy jank deck. The core strat and wincon is blowing up your own creatures with a blasphemous act-style effect to kill your opponent.

    In terms of the Defiler cycle, the white and black ones were probably the worst of them. The green one can be really good, especially in pioneer/explorer, where Great Henge is still legal. The red one is not spectacular, but it can work well in a red deck, since the ping can either go face or take out a 1/1 and let you play a bunch of Monastery Swiftspears for free and save the mana to pump them or something. The blue one is pretty bad, but it draws cards, which I think makes it better than the white or black ones, since your permanents are now net-neutral in card advantage and there are cards (like Nathan's card) that benefit from the drawing. Granted, the cycle overall wasn't spectacular, but there's definitely a big gap between green and the rest.

    9:26 Dude, I got 17 1/1 ant token on the field with my ant queen once, then pumped them all to 4/4. that's not counting the handful of other creatures I had. Sadly, I was at an EDH/commander tournament, playing mono-green, and my brother was one of my opponents. He played Iona and called green. Shutting down my deck and half of another opponent's deck. Then the next turn, one of the opponents used something and wiped the board. I can't remember more details than that, this was like 12 years ago. Still have that mono-green, it's been through changes, though.
    20:55 Elesh Norn has been a thing in MTG since before Destiny 1 was even announced. She was first printed in the New Phyrexia set in 2011. Destiny 1 was announced in 2013, and Eris Morn didn't appear until the Dark Below dlc in 2014. Also, that wasn't a picture of Eris Morn, that was a picture of the Hive God Crota.

    So while I won't say that MtG never takes inspiration from other games in terms of art direction etc... it's far far more common for other games to be inspired by parts of mtg's art. A lot of that just comes down to how long MTG has existed and therefore how many folks who have gone on to make other games have been exposed to it.
    Like, FromSoft has explicitly made references to MtG (as in, they literally said in interviews) for a fully confirmed example. It's totally possible for Destiny to have been similarly inspired. It could also be coincidence, especially bc the names being similar does have explanation (both pulling from similar mythology), but there's nothing directly in mythology that echoes the Machine Orthodoxy aesthetic. MtG pulled from Geiger and other horror sources for the aesthetic of Norn's faction, and while its possible Destiny just happened to pull from all the exact same sources to come to a similar conclusion...feels like a bit of stretch to say they had no exposure at all to Elesh Norn (who predates their game).

    The WWWW cost on Vindicator really is that brutal for it's playability. Once you go above 2 pips of the same color, a card has to be exponentially more and more powerful (or the manafixing has to be even more insane) to see any play outside of mono-that-color decks. I still remember right before I started playing Magic, folks I knew played were questioning if Cryptic Command was even good enough to see play with because it cost 1UUU.

    The assessment of virtue of loyalty is kind of poor on both ends, they missed the most critical part of the card. The creature has flash, flash is one of the best keywords for creatures to have. It lets esper hold up mana for counterspells then play a threat if nothing happens, or plays around board wipes in a tempo deck. Understating this fact heavily under sells what makes loyalty good

    • @TheOneJameYT
      @TheOneJameYT  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought I mentioned it had flash in the video but I guess not lol. And I’m not sure how I could have a poor assessment of a card I’ve literally played with.

    • @chaosky9
      @chaosky9 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So I mean this as pure critism and still enjoy the content. However I do find you gloss over the main reasons to what makes a card good or you don’t go into enough detail. Virtue is a sumtotal of about 7 different elementals. But atleast think you only state 1-2 reasons. Which isn’t really the full picture. Mentally you might have the full picture in your head.
      But you don’t express it which leads to the assessment of the card sounding off or half assed.

    • @chaosky9
      @chaosky9 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Like also with vindicator you could of clarified after they gave there answer that you can’t really block it even with a flying or reach creature as the combat with be redirected anyway and you’d lose your creature. And that any target doesn’t just mean any creature it can also go face. And then clarified why it’s still bad. Because it has bad protections and it basically just serves as a 5/5 unblockable sometimes because it’s unblockable until your opponent blocks it to stop lethal. So it’s a glorified beater. And beaters at 4 mana need more then just “pro red”

    • @chaosky9
      @chaosky9 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So being an effect your opponent virtually gets to control is bad. Because at competitive tournaments only 1/15 matches will someone do damage to this on accident.

    • @TheOneJameYT
      @TheOneJameYT  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chaosky9 I could go into every single detail (and trust me I know them) but I don’t really want the video to be even longer than it already is, and the long explanations might go over someone’s head if they don’t already play Magic.
