    That's pretty rich of Konami saying that "you used the wrong power adapter" when they were too cheap to even include a cheapo USB power adapter with it. Thank goodness I used some random low power one with it that I just had laying around. I had no idea I'd been flirting with death playing with this thing.

      Same. I leached off my TV's USB port not realizing it was so sensitive to the power source. Maybe i've been okay because i don't play for hours at a time or maybe i have the later model that someone else mentioned in the comments.

    Unfortunately, the TG16-Mini, even if you order that chip that appears cooked, it will not solve the issue you are having. To the right of the fried chip, there are several small resistors soldered onto pads on the board -- the way they are set up, if left as is, they will fry the chip shortly after it's fixed anyway. Oddly, when the board is turned on, there are 2 (maybe only 1 functioning) resistors keeping the USB ports at 4.7-4.8 volts. Once the device is turned off, however, there are there 3 resistors present that bypass the individual USB resistors, yet still manage to maintain voltage (potential current) flow through the USB ports -- these are all allowing a complete bypass of the other two resistors. So, when the console is off & plugged in, 5.1V is maintained over those two ports; when it is turned on, the resistors hold the voltage lower. Considering there are only ever 2-to-3 resisters on the board working at once & with the wrong voltage no less, those things are getting fried pretty darn quick for quite a few different people.
    & Holy smokes! These things were selling wayyyy above msrp after they launched! If you take a gander at the specs though..., that is a quad-core ARM board from years ago. That's not necessarily a bad thing -- the Nvidia Shield TV & the Switch use the Tegra x1 chip & that's nearing a decade old & that SoC only got better over the years & it's an ARM quad core with Nvidia's GPU tech integrated. ....&, I can't be 100% sure, but I'm 99.99999% sure the titles on the TG16-Mini can be played on at least one of those two systems via emulator. You'd just need to own a license to whichever games' given ROM(S) (you do...) because then, for the Shield TV at least, once you have a copy of the ROM you want & an emulator, you can sideload that with a microSD card & play the game without voltage issues. You just need the ROM for the game...!! Where can one find ROMs at for God's sake...?!! It's fairly simple if you look & may be considered "piracy"....whatever that even means...(?) But ROMs can be found -- it'd be a whole lot easier than soldering on those pads & correcting the flaw -- just keep the TG16 in camera shot at all times to maintain the illusion of the TG16 mini delivering exactly what you want.....(?)

    • @XVa-uj8m
      @XVa-uj8m 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Far as I'm concerned you DO own the games and the right to use the ROM's by extension considering you own this device which is meant to play those games in PC Engine form.
      In fact Konami owns Hudson Soft so by extension like 90% of the games on that with Ys 1 and 2 and Ghouls and Ghosts being the 3 they don't. You paid Konami that money by buying the device.
      Here's hoping my PC Engine Mini doesn't have the same problem.

      It won in Japan for at least 2 years which is how it got so many games on it over there. Known as the PC Engine which is a name I like better.
      The marketing in the US I think really hurt it as they leaned into the 80's "Bigger is better" motif which I think was absolutely the WRONG way to go. They should have kept the same color and size as Japan and used it as a opportunity to create buzz by surprising people when they saw it and doubted it then played it.

  • @thenuclearsandwich
    @thenuclearsandwich 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Being that I could not get the official power adapter is the reason I've never tried to play it yet. Luckily, I read beforehand that it could be fried with the wrong adapter. So, I'm certainly not going to risk it. That should have been included with the system for the amount they charged for it.

    Luckily, I read about this issue before purchasing a PC Engine mini (which has mostly the same games as TG-16 mini, minus Salamander, and the system cost less at the time.. now, it's quadrupled in price) from Amazon Japan. Amazon US website had a 3rd party wall charger ("Armor3 "ReadyVolt" USB AC Adapter for Turbografx-16 Mini and PC Engine Mini") made specifically for TG-16/PC Engine minis, so that's the solution I went for. Unfortunately, it's no longer available on Amazon. I bought one of those electronic mini toolkits for other reasons though - opening up & upgrading laptop RAM memory - so it's useful to have one around if you do any sort of consumer electronics, laptop/PC repairs or upgrades.

    I put A LOT of time on my TG16 mini, and beat most of the games on it. Never knew about this...thankfully. The one I got off amazon that seemed to work for all those hours which I bought in 2020 was: Armor3 "ReadyVolt" USB AC Adapter for Turbografx-16 Mini and PC Engine Mini - Not Machine Specific. But don't blame if it fries it...actually I was going to boot it up soon to play through Neutopia II which is probably the last game I want or need to beat still.

    I remember when i saw the trend start around the launch of the mini being pretty worried and buying the official USB brick/cable: glad I did. Still, I wrote a summary article warning about what was going on a year or two after the system came out, and lately the article has been blowing up like mad, so unfortunately I guess a lot of people are having this issue.
    I saw one YTer successfully fix theirs but it seemed very tricky and frustrating to do, so I hope at some point a definitive, easier way to fix these minis can be found in the future, and said system can be stopped from frying itself in the future alongside that fix. (Maybe when a hack is finally released for it?)

I had an original TG-16 back in the 90's and loved it. I was excited to buy the mini a couple years ago but when they finally released I was too busy renovating houses to pay attention and missed the original sales. Resale ones were marked up way too high so I've kind of lost the desire for one. Looking forward to see if you're successful on the repair. Did domeone break a thermometer. Are teo traces too close togetger? Did a carbon trace jump across? Did the manufacturing not conformal cost that are. Did someone spill something in it? I just got my hands on an english translation of Mother 3, i think theres information in some of these games, information that may have been passed off as pure fantasy, it may be the clues for the world to come.
    Very cool to see you considering swapping out a shorted out chip, thats skill if you can do that.

    Use a P-MOSFET and a Schottky diode to regulate the voltage...I am sure someone makes a usb plugin to regulate the voltage outside the unit or a small circuit you can bridge inside by wiring it in front of the USB power feed.

    So what Power Adapter was you using? If you pluged into a TV USB Port, they have mostly only 500mah and 5V Output. My Mostly used AC Adapters with on or two USB Ports has 5 V with 1AH or 2AH. So what AC Adapter was used? Any others over 5V i never used for many other mini consoles or smartphones. A raspberry pi ac adapter with 5v and 3ah should work to. Or is the Problem the high Ampere?

    1:06 there's no other way to play these games!?! this is just an EMULATION DEVICE in a pretty superficial shell, probably using mednafen which you can play on pretty much any system going, and before that you had magic-engine a brilliant emulator which you have been able to play for 25+ years!

    I had no idea you liked games my dude. That's fantastic. I got the PC engine mini ordered from Japan on ebay and it didn't come with a power brick. It didn't ship with a power brick in the first place. The company omitted it in spite of it being sensitive to power too (so I'm told). I run it from the USB on my TV just to be safe.

      @ClaytonMorris  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Smart. I’ve heard that has worked for people using their tv usb hub. It’s impossible to find the Hori manufactured power brick that is sold separately.

    I see from some of the other comments I'm not the only one to be a bit surprised that the dude from Redacted is a gamer. Pretty cool though that you are a gamer. Your video about Elon talking about video games is how I found this channel (that video is worth a watch)
    Funny though , I used to have a TG-16 back in the day and Ys 1 was one of my favourite games. Anyways , if you still are looking to play Ys 1 and 2 ... I'm pretty sure it's on steam nowadays :)

    I've been fortunate having old phone chargers that natively operate at 5v 2.0 amps and had my mini a few years no issue after clearing YS book 1 & 2, Dungeon Explorer, Lords of thunder, Draxula X Rondo of Blood. The mini is worth it to me having since it does represent the best of the system though I wished it had street fighter 2 CE I had that cart thanks to a catalog named TZD (turbo zone direct.) I used to own the cd-rom too and super system card but a house fire would ensure I moved on to emulation. I been eyeballing the PC-engine and everdrive and I kinda like the smaller unit wished the US was more like the japanese console why didn't NEC spare themselves the extra costs or tooling a new console shell when they could have just shipped in mass the same case and give it the same name they could have also included a default multi tap (limit to two players) and included another controller make the cords longer and sell it for around $150 usd I think they could have cornered the 16 bit market with the extra year head start the money saved put into marketing and pushing games developers would have really taken notice.
    I could go into the what ifs so hard with the tg-16 it was a great system and I still hold hope someone makes ports of Mortal Kombat for it at least the first 2 in that franchise.

    It must be a USB hub chip. You can see the one pair of data lines going to the chip and the two pairs going to the USB ports. You might be able to just de-solder the chip and wire the USB data from the APU straight to one of the USB ports to get one controller working. Depends how much USB support is programmed into the Kernel. You might also be able to substitute in any number of USB hub controllers.

    About the chip I can't help much because I am a Mega Drive player, but if you check social medias you should be able to find Turbo Grafx fan groups and ask there. I am sure you will find a fella that is happy to open the console and take a photo of the chip name.

    I just did a quick look up for a 28 pin USB Hub IC and FE1.1S appears to have the same pinout. Not saying this is compatible though. Pin 1 is ground. Pins 4&5 are data - + for one controller port. Pins 6&7 would be an unused USB port. Pins 8&9 are data - + for the other controller port. 10 & 11 would be another unused USB port. Pin 13 should be 3.3V. The data to the processor; the two traces coming from under the bottom should go to pins 15&16 data - +. Pin 20 should be 5V and 21 is 3.3V, where all the melting has occurred... It even uses a 12MHZ crystal, the silver component above the IC, and that should be connected to pins 2&3. The proper chip part number is MA8601.
