In 2015, my first practice drone also got stuck in a tree. I tried a similar approach, with a tennis ball with fishing line attached to it. I thought I could throw the ball over that tree, but I was nowhere close. So I used a tennis racquet to hit it up and over the branch which didn’t take too many tries, and then yanked the branch as you did but my drone came down much more softly, almost in an auto land configuration with the props spinning. Luckily, my Inspire, Mavic 2, and Mini 3 Pro have not yet found themselves in a tree.
What you just said about low battery warning happend to me today 3/22/2022. I then pressed return home I didn't realize it will go up 20m then t used manual land with left joystick down and it got confused and got stuck in tree. I had to go to hardware store and rent 32 ft ladder. Luckily an soccer player climed up the latter and and threw the ball at it and it fell out.

I've had this happen again since - once you've done it one it's fairly easy...
