    Always use gloss as your first coat, it creates a better build, more resins. Then go to your last coat of whatever sheen you want the
    Finished product to be.

      Nanny B hi there, i just finished painting my kitchen cabinets white as well (water based paint) in a matte (flat) finish.
      Im really scared of the paint chipping off with time so i was thinking of applying a polyurethane on it in crystal clear matte finish. I haven’t done it yet but im worried it might discolor.
      Can you please let me know which topcoat you used that yellowed your cabinets?

      The tannin in the wood is coming up through your paint when you add the topcoat. I have this post that will help you showing you what I did in my kitchen (and the products I used): rootsandwingsfurniture.com/blog/kitchencabinetmakeover/
      I also have a video tutorial on kitchen cabinet painting coming for you in just another week or so... stay tuned!!

    The water based stuff doesn't smell but.. apparently its still hitting ya with VOCs. Oil based urethane is about twice as poisonous. Oil based you can literally get a glass smooth finish with a natrual bristle brush. water based... PRACTICE. I am currently playing with spraying on high performance gloss with mixed results. I totally agree with the 400 grit paper, lately I have actually been using 600 between coats.

    I'm in the process of painting a table and chairs with chalk paint, which I chose for coverage. I had a problem before with regular paint, semi gloss, but now I find out there is paint specifically for furniture. Anyway, since I have a large family I feel I needed a stronger topcoat than wax so I am using a water based poly acrylic. IRuns were a big problem so I am putting on several thin coats. Also have you ever used tung oil. I used it on an old cabinet and I love the finish. I just found your channel today. Thanks for all your videos.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! Yes, several thin coats is the way to go with a runny product. I think your choice on poly acrylic over wax was absolutely the right one!! I have used tung oil, but it's been years since I did. I liked it over a wood finish, not sure how it would do over paint. Some of the oil finishes have a tendency to yellow the paints over time.

Should I top coat this project? Plan is 1 coat of primer and 3 rolled/brushed coats of white latex paint with 220 sanding in between and 400 before last coat of paint. Thank you for your help!!

    Hi there! I’m enjoying and appreciating your videos. I have a piece that I’ve chalk painted and waxed. However, I would like to use a sealer on it because I’m not happy with the wax. I need a more protective finish. I do want a bit of a sheen to it, not flat. What is the best way for me to clean it, removing the wax and leaving the color? And which type of topcoat would you recommend? Thank you so very much.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! You'll have to dissolve the wax. Use mineral spirits to get off as much wax as you can and maybe a fine grit sandpaper as well. You may need a new coat of paint, it's going to be hard to protect the color. I recommend General Finishes High Performance Topcoat or Dixie Belle Topcoats!

    Great video! I am going to paint a bathroom wall with chalk paint and looking for a top coat that will dry as flat as possible. I’ve seen some videos that say if you apply the GF top coat thick it will dry milky white, just as it was wet. Yours dried clear. Has drying milky in spots ever been a problem for you? Is there a trick to this?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pam! I've never had the problem of it drying milky, I've heard others say this though. For the flattest finish I'd recommend Flat out Flat. Stir (don't shake) it well before applying and then apply in an even coat, don't over brush (this could impact the final finish). I hope that works for you!

    I painted my cabinets white recently with oil based paint, but it doesnt have a shiny finish. Applying a top coat would solve that problem or would it make it look yellow like many people suggest?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may yellow the cabinets. If you used a primer under the paint the chances of this is less, but not guaranteed. Maybe you could use a paste wax or other similar product to increase the shine and wipe-ability but not yellow the doors!

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you sure can! High Performance is a water based topcoat. So once it's dry, you can paint over it. If you used a shiner finish, just scuff it up a bit with 220 grit and then you are just fine to paint!

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glaze - yes. Wax - no. Glaze is usually water based, so applying a top coat is fine. Wax (unless it's Dixie Belle) is not waterbased, so most topcoats will not adhere to a waxed surface!

    Have you used High Performance over white milk paint? Did it yellow?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      High Performance is the LEAST likely to yellow white paint. It depends more on the wood underneath the paint and if applying a water based topcoat will bring the tannin in the wood out. One trick is to mix some HP with some white paint to tint the topcoat, ensuring white will stay white!

    • @donc5281
      @donc5281 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Roots and Wings Furniture and Home I’ve already painted my table with a oil based white. Will that mixing method work if I mix the HP with my oil based white as well?

    Painted a piece of furniture with a blue chalk/clay paint and sealed it with hemp oil. It's been 3 weeks and when I touch it I can see a little bit of the color on my finger. Why is it happening? Hemp oil and Salve are good sealera for chalk/clay paint?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would usually think Hemp Oil would be a great sealer for that kind of paint as Hemp Oil is supposed to dry to a hard finish. Maybe try applying one more thin coat of the Hemp Oil to the piece. Don't put on too much, and buff it lightly with a clean cloth after application. Hope that helps!

    • @marielramirez5775
      @marielramirez5775 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roots & Wings Furniture LLC thanks, will try.
      Another question I have is that I mixed Salve with Annie Sloan dark wax to darken a table and since I wanted it very dark I applied a lot but didn't buff it because I don't want the color to change and well it's been 2 weeks and feels very tacky. What can I do?
      What do you use with Salve to age a piece of furniture?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mariel Ramirez-Holkon I dont use wax or salve because of this! I like to use glaze because its water based and dried quickly. Since it's there is would buff it as much as you can! Try to get some of it off so it will dry and apply more coats to darken if you still want to.

    • @marielramirez5775
      @marielramirez5775 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! In my office i have a very large desk with several drawers, cabinets, and an armoire that isn't top notch quality, but i've taken the initiative to paint over it. A representative in home depot suggested that I sand it with 150grit sand paper first, then buy regular paint with the primer mixed in-- i painted one set of drawers and it came out great but unfortunately I couldn't find a matte finish top coat in time and already the paint has been damaged... I definitely do not want to have to repaint it constantly, and I do not want the furniture to shine-- should I stick to the regular paint with primer mixed in? should I do a gel stain or a chalk paint? Which top coat can I buy and apply that will give the furniture a matte finish? I will definitely be purchasing an electric sander for this and id appreciate any suggestions-- please and thank you so much in advanced!

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A couple tips. 1. Prep sanding and scuffing the surface before painting will give you a more durable finish in the end. 2. Look at this top coat (even over the regular paint and primer) it should help protect it without adding shine: dixiebellepaint.com/clear-coat-flat/?aff=177
      3. I use a quarter pad sander - mine is a Ryobi from Home Depot and it has held up great!
