If I rode a fixie, I’d define have a front brake. I ride a regular road bike and 80-90% of my stopping power comes from my front brake. I only use my back brake to slow down slightly at higher speeds because it’s far less powerful.

Ebin Weis is the man. My kind of cyclist, relaxed while enjoying the city. It took me years to figure out I didn't have to be in race mode or get angry at people doing dumb things. Once I realized I was choosing to ride angry, I readjusted my attitude and expect stupid stuff to happen. I remember saying to myself it won't kill you to slow down. That made all the difference. I always enjoyed Ebin's writing over at Bike snob, where he hilariously punctures attitude in cycling culture. Great to see his wit carries over to video.
Shout out to Terry for posting this. Hope to see more.

Ha, Bike Snob, do you remember in your early days, when I used to get on and make bizarro comments, from Australia, absolutely blasted on Absinthe, beer and various narcotics, after wild messenger partying on Friday night, and into Saturday mornings, then riding 10 k's home , on brakeless track bike when I couldn't even walk...somehow making it home, time after time, my faithful steed somehow getting me there. Semi incoherent blasts of bile, my comments were......you may recall, you may not. You certainly noticed them then.... Good to finally see your face, and see that your humour is unchanged, we may mellow, but we do not change in spirit. I'm practically straight edge now, don't drink, and gave up weed a few months ago, my mind even more wicked for it. I opened channels with acid, decades ago , that never close, absolutely no regrets there, or about any of it! But there was a time and place for that, it was called the decade of the late 90's, early noughties, for me! I retired '09, moved to the country, bush in fact, worked in a truck trailer factory, made big eff off Aussie ones, place full of lovely country folks . Now in Riga , Latvia, back in the local bike community, fixing, spreading the joy, touching lives, rather than just riding!

While I do at times get a little more aggressive on the streets then some may think is safe, my over all philosophy to moving around an urban area by bike is to be seen, but not felt as I move through the city. Your bike has breaks, accommodate them (the pedestrians). I like how you think! I am a slow biker who stops at most stop lights (not stop signs- fuck that) and waits for pedestrians - embarrassing. Biking helps me to not be in a hurry - I see so many things I wouldn’t if I was driving. Like the dead deer in the ditch that’s been slowly decomposing since July. I’ve named him Bill. Poor Bill.

I have a front brake on my fixed gear. I use it when necessary, not all the time. Most of the time I slow my cadence. However, I'm able to ride faster with it because I can slow down faster with it. I am a courier @ Aloha Couriers and one of the faster couriers due to having a brake and being able to decelerate rapidly without skidding. Preference is freedom, ride how you want, as long as you keep those legs Turning 🤙🏻

You forgot to mention where you'll have to true your wheels every week because the roads in NYC are absolutely atrocious and filled with pothole after pothole. Maybe I don't know how to ride a bicycle or something lol, but after riding my fixie (well it's mostly on the freewheel side for the time being while I learn how to ride fixed) for a week, a handful of the spokes of my rear wheel are loose and squeaky, which was never the case on my MTB. I actually kinda enjoy the rough ride with zero suspension in a weird way, but I really hope there's something I can do to not have to mess with my spokes every week.

As someone that likes to commute by bike and walk around the city its baffles me how little attention some people on bikes pay to pedestrians. Do you not realize how close yall sometimes fly by pedestrians on a shared path? Cant count how many times I almost got scraped by someone riding a bike cause they felt the need to pass as fast and close arround me as they can. Relax, take it slow. there are times during commutes to go fast and there are times to go slower.
