Matt Dillon Discusses "The House That Jack Built"

- Boundary-pushing cinematic visionary Lars von Trier returns with one of his most daring, masterfully provocative works yet. In "The House That Jack Built," failed architect and arch-sociopath Jack (Matt Dillon) recounts the elaborately orchestrated murders-each, as he views them, a towering work of art-that define his "career" as a serial killer. Mixing pitch-black humor, transcendent surrealism, and renegade musings on everything from history to architecture to cinema, von Trier fashions a radical, blazingly personal inquiry into violence, art and the twin acts of creation and destruction.

This guy seriously deserves an Oscar nomination for his performance in this film!!
He's that great and believable. He brought the right amount of charm and range to bring this psychotic character to life. In my opinion, his work on this film is one of the top best performances of the year.
Unfortunately, Hollywood didn't agree. It was one of the better performances of the year (alongside Toni Collette who was also snubbed). I 100% agree with you.
@That's Just My View It's a shame. Toni Collette & Dillon both gave some impactful and unforgettable performances last year. And wish they had gotten the recognition they both deserved.
THAT´S TRUE MAN
@@ThatsJustMyView it’s just a popularity contest
You're not going to get an Oscar nomination playing a serial killer
His voice is a big, fat YES
I can listen to Matt Dillon talk all day
joceline LITERALLY
He should start a podcast, I would listen to it all day.
You'd love the house that jack built
real
ON GOD BRO I ABSOLUTELY LOVE EVERYTHING AB THIS MAN ESPECIALLY HOW FINE HE WAS IN THE 80S
Dillon was robbed today, he should have got an Oscar nod for this. Brilliant performance.
His voice is so nice I would literally listen to him talk for the rest of my life and not complain
Matt Dillon has always been a good actor. And to see him in a Lars von Trier movie is a treat.
Yess
My man deserves a Oscar
Damn right!
Absolutely, but the Oscars suck and won’t even consider it.
Sad, but true!
THAT´S TRUE

Matt Dillon deserves an Oscar for this movie, absolutely incredible
How tf is he 54? Looks a good decade less..

I attended Mamaroneck High School with Matt Dillon before he became an actor. He was a stand up guy and I'm happy for his success.
Oooo was he a total lady’s man in high school?

I seen little darlings 13 times when it came out lol my friend and I would go 2 times a week just to look at him! We knew every line by every character in the whole movie. Still today one of my favourite actors
Matt dillon is an amazing actor. So realistic. He brought the chatacter so well.
Matt Dillon is very underrated, he's more talented than most, he's an artist, I watched this movie on lsd and it was amazing. Absurd, but beautiful, it was like Dantes inferno
Man is an underrated actor.
Love him in this film
His voice is not masculine.
Masculine is his voice.
I feel like the audience is either too clueless or too scared to react to Matt Dillon’s humor.
Loved The House That Jack Built, adore Matt Dillon + Lars von Trier. Cool interview thanks :)
Loved the Dante’s inferno tie in and of course Matt. So many times throughout my life I found myself amazed and entertained by Matt Dillion. Starting with Dally from the Outsiders all the way to Jack. Terribly underrated film, I love reading about true crime and the psychology behind Matt’s character is fascinating. Like him explaining his sense of fair play when killing the family. so disturbing but seemingly real. Kudos
He definitely deserved a damn Oscar. That performance was unreal. Shocking and scary yet hilarious
Lars Von Trier is a fookin' legend
This guy is a good interviewer, I see him cover like every movie I like
I watched this film last night and cannot get it out of my head.
Same here. The picnic..
Its insane...But also just so artisticly made. And with such a performance by Matt D
Its buggin me that this interview isn’t synchronized
I used to not care much for Matt Dillon, but after watching House That Jack Built I realised what a great actor he is.
Ever heard of over the edge, the outsiders, drugstore cowboy, wild things???
23:53. Did anybody else get chills when he looked at the camera after saying that.
Matt Dillon is so ridiculously amazing in this movie and all his movies, honestly. The guy deserves recognition
Kudos to Matt Dillon. Lynch, Cronenberg, Herzog and Von Trier are amazing film directors. For me this film and 'Melancholia are Lar's greatest works of art to date.
i just can’t believe Ralph macchio is older than Matt Dillon 🤣💗 but they both still look as handsome as they did 30 years ago 🥺
BRO MATT WAS SO HOT IN THAT MOVIE AND SO WAS RALPH THAT WAS MY FAV FILM OF HIS
The strangulation scenes were by far the most realistic I’ve seen in any movie. Something about those scenes made them incredibly hard to watch. I think it’s the grunts of the victims, or the way that student kept squirming over and over trying her best to fight for her life but failing
You should check out the movie "the most hated woman in america" the ending scene is so realistic, my husband and I still talk about it 5 years later. Burned in our skulls
I felt the same.
I have to admit I've had s man crush on Matt Dillion since the 70's. Not in a sexual way!!!! I just like the guy. He's awesome....great actor and all around goods guy with damb good looks! I mean he still looks great in his fifties.
Frank White honestly who wouldn’t lol. Agreed!
So you're straight
A great movie and a career defining performance by Dillon. Some parts of the movie can be a bit stretched and the run time of 2,5hrs is not that effective. However, the opening 60 minutes and the ending is the best I’ve seen in 2019, maybe the best of the 2010’s even
In my opinion one of the great underrated actors in our lifetime.
Still can't believe that "having a family" scene. That whole segment was my favorite.
The interviewer did a great job here. Note to the editor or sound designer here... there's a bunch of weird clipping and clicking sounds throughout the video that are a bit distracting. Nothing major, just throwing that out there.
Yeah Ricky is the man! My God, he interviews EVERYONE from Matt Dillon to every range of actors, musicians, artists, authors, etc...AND ALWAYS KNOWS HIS SHIT and always knocks it out of the park
The best film of the year in my opinion. May very well be an all time favorite after a few more viewings
Did they change the chairs in the set because of Bill Burr? XD
Im real curious. What did he say?
The movie is a rough watch. But made so well and is definitely worth watching. Loved it!
Am I the only one who burst out laughing at the ending when Percy Mayfield's "Hit the Road Jack" immediatly started playing? Such an absurd film. Imagine being the CGI artist who had to animate little kids getting shot? SMH...
This is one of my most anticapated films, it isn't out yet in Finland
@@MrCholoPants3415 I have seen some disturbing films and know Von Trier's style in films so I can suspect what to look foward to. Also I don't think the edited version even arrives to Finland, I think it will be the directors cut
There's always the Internet man! Go on, whether on putlocker, gomovies, 123movies... they all have it! I just don't whether you can watch those sites in Finland!

Dally from outsiders?? I thought he died? Looks like Johnny’s death affected him very much!
Caleb Villela HAHAHAAH
The character died not the actor
@@midnight_x_edits wait, what? You mean there’s a difference?
Thank you so much
Seems like Matt is a little embarrassed about playing such a depraved character. He censors himself a lot here; maybe that's due to the nature of this being a very long interview with people who have seen the film already and he's in a VERY DIFFICULT position to not spoil or even hint at spoilers with his answers. Either way, jeez... What a fuckin' talented and underappreciated actor. He's brilliant. This is easily the best performance I've seen all year. I literally cannot imagine anyone else doing a better job in the role. I really hope this puts him on the radar for more great films; he's been shoehorned into these shitty romcom roles for a decade for some reason, and he's so much better than that.
after OD'ing on structure, was helpful as a filmmaker to see this interview, talking about working freer and taking more risks and not abandoning concepts
Going to see this film tonight. Thank's for the interview with my favorite host - great questions, as always!
You look great! Great interview.
Lars Von Trier made it quite accurately and artistically. It is a reality for some and a nightmare for others. Definitely showed how murder is seen to the some, as art. A form of engulfed morbid curiosity, beauty and blunt truth. Although the ending left me with a taste in my mouth of a stark foreboding of myself, actually leaving me with a psychotic episode the following day. I’m on neutral grounds when it comes to religion and is hazy for me which is why it left me with a bombarded mind.
Facetious Times you need a friend
Sam Smith you’re right I only have one other friend
I agree.
I think that one of the things this film examines is that we have actual no obstruction from creating whatever art we want.
I mean, we'd go against a moral code, though it's a moral code that we ourselves, Mankind, constructed, and one that isn't given by Nature, so objectively we can't talk about right or wrong, we can just talk about having the freedom for whatever. And that's one of the things that I love about this movie, it talks about the true infinite nature of art, which is subsequent to our basic moral need of seeking satisfaction.
Or at least that's my opinion and interpretation.
It is not morality or an "imaginary ghost daddy" that makes wanton murder an error. It is the fact that it wastes human potential, and makes you a target, probably until you are captured or killed, for the rest of your life. Sociopaths who kill are not the most intelligent sociopaths. The most intelligent ones are not attracted to behaviors that they know will cause problems for them. They need to think things through more than most people, mainly because their "ethical soundtrack" is either missing or in the wrong language, or severely out of sync. Much like a movie you download that has an out of sync soundtrack or subtitles if it's a foreign language, a sociopath doesn't have accurate access to the answer to the question, "Should I murder this woman and her young sons, keeping their bodies for objects of my amusement or artistic endeavors?" The very obvious answer should be "NO! That would be something to avoid, if possible, like you might avoid sleeping on the roof of a very tall building with a steep angle in a snow storm." It's just a very misguided notion for entertaining one's self. Intelligent sociopaths know that they have to think things through a lot better than the average person.
This movie is awesome Matt and Lars they both deserve an Oscar
This guy would make a damn good Deathstroke/Slade Wilson!!
I love how well ocd is represented in this movie it makes me feel seen
He killed this movie
I would like to see one interview with them talking about Rumble Fish or Over the Edge
Yess for me it's Rumble Fish and The Saint of Ford Washington that I would love for Matt to sit down and really talk about !
The Outsiders would be better
I love this movie and I definitely had to rewatch it yesterday after a few bowls. So worth it.
A great movie and an Oscar worthy performance.
He looks like at his late 30's and his voice, so deep so hot
Like many, Matt Dillon was in most of my favorite films.
The Outsiders, My Bodyguard and on and on, I first remember seeing him in (I think it was his first film) Over The Edge, I think it was 1978-79.
Bro he's just the charm to any movie his 80s movies especially theyre so good
Great film and performance !
Open my eyes just to have them close again
Well on my way, but on my way to where I’ve been
It swallows me as it takes me in its fog
I twist away as I give this world the nod
Open door, so I walk inside
Close my eyes, find my place to hide
And I shake as I take it in
Let the show begin
The higher you are
The farther you fall
The longer the walk
The farther you crawl
My body, my temple
This temple, it tilts
Step into the house that Jack built
14:34 HAhahaha, Norm Macdonald would say that probably: "This jack guy is a real JERK!"
Matt Dillion sounds how Josh Brolin attempts to sound as Thanos
I loved this movie!
He's over 50 years old??? Wow, good genes!
Bro he just turned 60 like 2 weeks ago 😭😭
I agree with that 100% he was so fine in the 80s too
Amazon doesn't appear to have a DVD of this film that plays in American machines. I wanna see this film very badly, and I hope that will be rectified soon by whichever parties can rectify it.
Matt Dillon is still cute😍⭐️💙
I met his brother Kevin Dillon when working as a night auditor at the hotel where he stayed. They were filming Interstate 84.
The guy is badass
Real I love him sm also I love ur pfp
Matt can get it.
Another somewhat recent film which also captures a very darkly nuanced but also comedic look at a serial killer character study is the German THE GOLDEN GLOVE from director Fatih Akin. At times disturbing and close to repulsive, but truly comedic. A great example of a filmmaker's ability to inject a tonal element which very seamlessly subverts the typical experience of the subject matter.
Of course he is playing Lars. The movie is a self portrait.
best film of the year
I want to see this film so badly!!! How can I?
You can rent it on Vudu
@@matthewdattilo1056 thanks man been wanting to see it bad.
After watching the film, I feel scared just listening to him right now hahha
I'm confused. Haven't seen matt dillon in years now and he literally only looks maybe early 40s here.
Therese something about Marry is my favorite comedy 🎭
I hope fans of Grunge and Cameron Crowe appreciate this comment. It amazes me that Brad Pitt became Chris Cornell's friend and after Singles, one of my favorite films of Dillon's, they never became buddies. Or with Eddie Vedder. They all gelled together great as fellow musicians and he kind of has an understated nature to him yet can still be funny at times like Cornell was. Dillon should have been at the tribute show. Cornell's wife Kim had to much control of his show and I have a feeling did not have enough sentimentality for Chris early days to put together it together. As illustrated by the prevelant pop stars performances over real rock musicians during the concert.
I can tell Matt Dillon and Kevin Dillon was brothers they look just alike
He still looks good
I'm somewhat surprised the interviewer forgot Rumble Fish and Factotum...
Is that strange, if i had so much simphaty for Jack, and his thoughts was realy interesting ideas, iam an artist as well
Brutal film. Very entertaining but very dark. Its only a movie, its only a movie...that is the way to watch it. If you take it as an educational film then call a shrink.
I WONDER WHAT KIND OF MOVIE IT WOULD BE IF TWO DIRECTORS, LARE VON TRIER AND DAVID LYNCH, MADE IT AT ONCE.

Lar's Psychopath is not ironic, he's a good capitalist. An Artist extraordinaire, going about his business as the center of the consumer able universe. This is dead pan, not irony.
He briefly mentions not being interested in serial killers, unfortunately, but i think being interested in serial killers is a good thing, i think people have this old school witch hunt mentality as in, if you're interested in serial killers or witches or have any knowledge on the matter makes you one of them, but it also makes sense that really simple people would not understand the difference in between, it's just a holy grail of story telling, if you're even half decent at it.
I LOVE YOU MATT DILLON
