  • The EFAP crew are joined by the wonderful Neil Marshall, accomplished Writer/Director of not only The Descent but many classics in the horror, action, historical and post-apocalyptic genres.
    In this unique episode, we discuss as many elements of production as possible while asking Neil about his experiences with the film.
    Go watch The Descent!

      Anyone who thinks the EFAP guys are just a bunch of haters who enjoy berating studios, actors, writers and directors, I strongly advise them to watch this episode. The love and appreciation they show Neal proves that they can be just as positive as they can be "negative." Just make good films and shows. It's that simple.

    • @captbuckyohare5585
      @captbuckyohare5585 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Exactly - the EFAP crew are extremely detail orientated and they have all said their first instinct is to look for patterns and consistency in storytelling, character, plot and world-building so when something's off they notice very quickly and they've been doing this long enough that they can identify the opposite patterns just as quickly (rushed scripts, writer's hand, tell vs show, poor world-building, cliches, problems with structure, voiceless characters etc etc) but it's clear from this episode and other watch throughs that when those good patterns are there, when the set-ups are well done and the pay-offs present, when there's clearly care and craftsmanship in the story and characters and the creators are confident enough and trusting enough in their audience to pick up on everything they're dropping into frame then they will absolutely notice and applaud it.
      I think anyone who's confused about why they'd celebrate something like The Descent but eviscerate something like Obi-Wan Kenobi either hasn't actually seen either of those things or isn't looking for very much from their entertainment.

      There are tonnes of cliche jumpscares in this film though.

    • @EmptyAltruism
      @EmptyAltruism 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When this came out I don’t think there was such an over saturation of GENERIC jump scares…it’s not so much that jumpscares are bad but it’s how they are used. I’d say the reason we consider jumpscares as cliche or bad is because they are used mechanically, generically, lacking in creativity.
      Some of the jump scares in this (while still being jumpscares) are creative and interesting. You can call them cliche if you want, maybe they are…but I’d argue these jumpscares are better than the “open a closet door, then when it’s closed reveal a spooky behind the door” type jumpscares.
      I could say more but comment is long already.

    Neil if by any chance you read this, I had one of the best movie viewing experiences with this film.
    I had a few friends over my last year of college and didn’t really get a ton of great reactions from them for a lot of the movies I played for them. The only one that got a rise out of them though, was the Descent. The overall experience was tense enough from what I remember, but I showed them the uncut version and when it cuts back to her in the cave, one of my friends let out this visceral “NOO…” and had the most shocked look on her face. It was such an instinctive noise and it was the giddiest I’ve ever felt showing anybody a horror movie. You made something great here sir and cinema’s better off for it, thanks to you and the crew.

    Genuinely never thought of the interpretation that the crawlers weren't real. I loved this film a lot so it never would have crossed my mind they would be doing that dumbass "it was all in the main character's head the whole time" trope. I really really hope Neil Marshall only started paying respect to that idea after reading an essay about it and being impressed by the argumentation. I just can't believe he would have been thinking that during filming.

    There is so much to love about this movie but I REALLY love the dialogue between the characters. Every single line feels perfectly in character. Imagine instead of spending money on dated CGI you used real sets and miniatures in your movies. Imagine caring about your script and allowing characters to be developed and give actors a chance to actually be in the mind of their character and allowing adjustments. Imagine letting your audience engage with the film and get to know your characters and not undercutting them emotionally every 5 seconds. Look Disney, I saved you $100,000,000 and improved your movies by 3 points automatically, hire me.

    Watched this film yesterday at the group's recommendation and i'm very glad I did, it was an amazing experience.
    It's also odd to watch it after so long due to two things, the Internet Historian's video on the spelunker who got trapped in the cave which shows how bad things can really get in these expeditions. And the second being Emesis Blue, the TF2 movie which seems to follow a lot of the same principles when it comes to shot composition and lighting with a similar plot of a character slowly losing their sanity.
