    The "real" Ogie Oglethorpe, Bill Goldthorpe, played in the WHA. So did the "real" Hansen brothers---Steve, Jack, and Jeff Carlson.

    The only two Canadian franchises at the time were the Habs and Leafs? Hey, I know the Canucks resemble a minor league team a lot of the time, but they actually were an NHL team back then!

    I saw the game in Vancouver 1974 Canada vs Russia. Gordie Howe on a line with Mark and Marty, Bobby Hull, he scored a hat trick that night, Paul Henderson, Frank Mahovlich. What a great memory. The game is on TH-cam as well.

    maybe a little know fact but the wha for a year played double header games. Bobby Hull remarked it was a brutal thing to do in hockey as its a contact sport. It was gimmic to say travel costs I guess.

      That first season the WHA had a Sunday game of the week on CBS, the first game was the Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Fighting Saints from the St. Paul Civic Center.

    You missed the most important thing of all, the WHA signed 18 year old players the Howes boys for example , before that NHL teams waited till players were 20

    • @Rockhound6165
      @Rockhound6165 ปีที่แล้ว

      And Gretzky and Messier were also teenagers when they were signed, ironically, both to the Racers(Gretzky ended up getting traded to Edmonton).

    • @robertsprouse9282
      @robertsprouse9282 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, there were never in a given season, 18 teams in the WHA. 14 WAS THE HIGH when there was a CANADIAN DIVISION AND EAST AND WEST DIVISIONS. That 3-division setup lasted, if I am not mistaken, either one or two seasons only.
      The NHL HAD 18 TEAMS a few seasons before THE BARONS FUSED WITH THE NORTH STARS to stay the NORTH STARS..
      But, going from 32 to 21 teams meant the NHL was a better league in the 1980's than it was, once the six-team era guys began to go past their prime, in the late '70's.
      Yep..

      @@idontgivetkachuk I tried looking myself. My guess is a lot of them weren't televised or as they did in those days they just taped over it. That's why there's no actual game footage of Super Bowl's 1 & 2.

    the nhl 's refusal to acknowledge the wha's impact on the game is pathetic..to this day remains a stain on the nhl..its a big reason why there is no hockey still in hartford and quebec and meanwhile the nhl has grown to places the nhl never would have tried before to put hockey into...
