What explains the rise of statism in America, a nation founded on laissez-faire capitalist principles? Leonard Peikoff takes up this question in this 1980 lecture to a group of businessmen. After considering popular yet insufficient explanations, Peikoff identifies the ideas dominating Western philosophy as the crucial determinant.
NOTE: The tape on which this was recording had to be flipped midlecture. Approximately 30 seconds of audio was lost at 29:36 after Peikoff says: “. . . even science is materialistic. It’s far too physical.” The recording resumes with: “They give it all kinds of names.”

Yeah man I agree. Harry Binswanger once said to Ayn Rand " If we had 10 more Leonard peacocks we would have won the culture by now."
She looked at him indignantly and said "No, one more Leonard Peikoff."

When someone says to me that laissez faire is impractical or unworkable, I ask if they agree with the premise that the use of force is immoral, but they cannot see a way for the concept of the non-initiation of force to be implemented.
You're halfway home there. If they agree with me morally but suggest you cannot see a path of utility, I say if more people were on the right side of the moral question ("as you are") then the practical "problem" disappears.

    1. Ethics: Capitalism depends on an ethics of Selfishness (Rational Self-Interest)
27:00 2. Metaphysics: Capitalism depends on a view that this world is real and it is the only thing that's real.
34:10 3. Capitalism depends on an Epistemology of Reason.

I wish to anyone, if you say it, then feel it the same in opposition to find out the truth
See and learn for your own self. There are documents to be seen and read in museums
see and live and find out on your own
I will never ask anyone to give up the right to fight. Define fight.
    Fight for the right
fight to be allowed to exsist?
    fight in the courts
    never stop fighting.
I am sad becaues the courts have already stopped caring for real law versus unruly crowds and protests.
Law was and it still is law but stupid people argued predidence against the law.
It is what it is and was
    Law was respected once.
    IDK when respect was lost
Law is law and it is intended to make it possible for all of us to make an equal arguement
ignorant people that love money are the ones destroying our lives

Peikoff has excellent pedagogical skills especially revealed in his summarizing of history of western philosophy by exhausting all important arguments being made. But his political and moral views are just naive and despicable, which is due to being a pupil of a witch😂

I gotta say that while I agree with Peikoff on about 90-95% of what he's saying here, I do have to make one observation, that politically I believe he's too perfectionist. His objection to libertarianism (both big and little L) seems to be more about it not having a proper philosophical basis than on the platform itself. I didn't hear any political objections to libertarianism and I might point out that not all libertarians are anarchists, that seemed to be his other point that the anarchists are capitalists who could be mistaken for socialists "proving" that capitalism is bad. I think that's a big stretch. Same with Reagan. While I do disagree with the modern right on religious issues and I agree with Peikoff's position on abortion, I'm against using that as a litmus test. If Reagan was pro-capitalism then to me, the reasons shouldn't matter. As Peikoff himself said, a politician cannot win office on the philosophy of objectivism, so let people who are capitalists do the campaign winning and people like Peikoff giving the speeches to educate.
I just feel that if the country is burning, we need to put the fire out, we can't quibble about who has the right ideas for the right or wrong reasons. I had the same feeling when Trump ran in 2016. He's far from perfect, even from a capitalist point of view. But I voted for him because I viewed him as the lifeboat. I don't like the lesser of two evil arguments, but can we start with not sinking further down or sinking slower first when the immediate alternative is accelerating the damage? The collectivists did their damage over 100+ years even as of the date of this talk. The problem with the conservative view is that we do NOT think like the left does strategically, have a long-term plan.
I also have to remind myself that this was I think prior to the 1980 election Apart from the religion aspect, his concerns about Reagan seem to mirror the concerns of many conservatives prior to Trump's election. I would hope he would now agree that despite some questionable foreign policy, Reagan was a force for good if for no other reason than defeating Soviet Communism.

I am speaking from a point of view of 2021.
I want people that come here to understand the context of the time period and not to compare the time periods. Right and wrong are the same, no matter how much anyone wishes to rationalize and twist it.
I imagine people are using the times against the world time that already happened.
    Times can't be undone.
    Today is happening
I guess we should be irrational and throw tantrums and not care about the history of what has been .
    IDK.
If you care for your beloved, then you should care for tomorrow and the rushed emotional path the world has been riding.
Emotional waves are carrying more than what the waves were meant to carry.
    Waves carry surfboards maybe?
Waves are carrying more than surfboards
Durr and ummm and IDK is being carried.
I do not subscribe to this person that is speaking here.
I am just here and saying my own
I do not dislike this person speaking here :)
    lol
I also do not agree with his words 100%
I do agree on some and disagree on some.
Should we go to war because we disagree?
    LOL
I think people hate the name "Capitalism".
    It has become tainted
Virtue is a word forgotten by all of us.
Define virtue. Define respect. Define morality and or morals. Define dignity.
Define what is proper. define what is allowed because in the end, you also defined what is the opposite?
Think about the truth and be the truth and own it
Ethics need to be defined also.
Once you know what I shared, I can only hope you learned your own ethical life.
    Is there a superior race?
Not from what I have experienced.
Superior whatever it was or is, superior is an odd word because durr?
Really? the word itself has served the purpose
We need to ban the word of course because it is wrong to think it is possible to be superior.
    Just a thought
It is selfish to be allowed to exsist
We are guilty of being racist when we are born.
I was born ignorant of the others of the world and because of this, I need to refuse anything I can gain from the world.
I normally would thank god for my blessing but because of the world today, I have to thank god and also curse god or do something.
    IDK exactly.
Trying to follow durr and duurology.
I care but I am tired of caring
