    • When Did Humans Start ...
    In this video:
    Poe met his bride-to-be, Virginia Clemm, when she was 7 years old, and he was 20, shortly after his mother’s death in 1829. Their parents, his natural father (David Poe) and her mother (Maria Clemm), were siblings, and Poe had moved into the Clemm home briefly before his time at West Point was to begin. Being so close in time to the death of his mother, some authors have opined that he transferred his feelings for his mother to his Aunt Maria, and later to his cousin.

    I like how the title begins with "That time when" as if it's something Poe did one night while drunk and now his friends are retelling the story. "Hey do you guys remember that time when Allan over here married his 13 year old cousin? Classic Allan."

      They are being a little too tryhard with their titles in shit. In fact the whole series "Today I found out" is a rip off of "Today I learned" aka "TIL" and he rips off VSauce with the annoying, pointless, and redundant "And as always, thanks for watching." Why do you start your last sentence with "and"? You're not continuing a subject you've jumped to a new one, the end. And you don't have to say "as always" just say it. Just say thanks for watching.

      He groomed a virgin girl and then took her virginity when she was ready. A proper man doing what society considers proper manly, taking a young virgin's virginity.. Tragic Virginia died of TB so young. Not surprising he was so depressed.

    • @ScottyDMcom
      @ScottyDMcom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@low-fatmilklove1187, why do you assume they are "so rare"? Brooke Shields' grandmother married very young (15 if I remember correctly) and they filled in the marriage certificate with a false age but a correct year of birth. To my recollection it feels like about 1/4 of the kids in my high school married the summer after they graduated, or about age 18. If a guy was going to become an auto mechanic and the girl a homemaker, why wait? (I met my sweetheart in college, so not part of that crowd.) The problem is that when looking at old records there will be a bias. Records that would have shown marriage at an unacceptably young age were tweaked to appear older. (For the record, Laura Ingalls married at 18.)
      Of course that doesn't mean a significant percentage of girls were marrying at 15, or 13, or even 7 (Brown Woman's story from "The Ways of My Grandmothers" by Beverly Hungry Wolf, pp 26-31). But it happened. And if the marriages had been correctly recorded they would significant pull the average down. A record of 21 doesn't move the average of 22.6 very much, but 13 has a disproportionate effect. Historically speaking, if 5% of girls were marrying before age 18, the records will show a far lower percent. Or in the case of Brown Woman, there never was a marriage license and so no record of her marriage.

    He didn't sleep in the same bed with her until she felt comfortable with it at about age 16. There's no record of her ever being pregnant, either. It's entirely possible there was no sex going on between them. In fact, if you read the letter he sent his aunt Maria declaring his love for Virginia, you can see how lonely he was and how bad his depression got when she wasn't there. While that doesn't necessarily mean it was totally platonic, it does seem to indicate that marrying her was more about not losing his closest friend and confidante than wanting to bang his teenage cousin, as everyone in the comments seems to think

      For those who don't know: This is a reference to a guideline for a relationship being creepy or not. If the younger partner is at least seven years more than half the age of the elder, it's fine. For instance, by this formula, a 26-year-old man would be fine dating someone who is at least (26/2)+7=20 years old.
      It's obviously up in the air whether mathematical formulae can meaningfully approximate something so subjective as creepy relationships, but it's the best guideline I've heard.

      @raraavis7782 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Timothy McLean Hm...did the math and it works fairly well...for what I would generally consider 'appropriate'. I think it works because the older one gets, the less inappropriate a large age difference becomes. 20-17, 30-22, 40-27, 50-32, 60-37 that's 23 years age difference for the last couple, yet it's quite common for men that age to be with women in their thirties or forties...with a 20 year old, however it would be frowned upon, even though it's perfectly legal. Neat rule.

    He technically never knew his real mother, having died when he was about a toddler. Are you referring to his step-mother? In any case, while I do believe Poe loved his wife, I am more than sure the marriage was largely for financial stability. I personally don't think they even consummated their marriage. Moreover, all the women in Poe's life died. Most of them, anyway. Early on, I'm sure Poe truly desired a maternal sense in his life, if not just a feminine one. He never got on with his step-father, and his step-mother of course died. He was very fond and protective of his step-mother. There could be so much more going on that we just don't know about. And we will probably never know. In any case, we can't look at this case from a 21st century view. He was allegedly a very loving and devoted husband, as well as a very friendly and playful sort of man when in Virginia's company.

    • @suitheshewolf1080
      @suitheshewolf1080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Mad Hattress, thank you, Poe was not some creepy pervert, he was a gentleman and having his mother dead he sought out women to care for him. He wanted a maternal relationship with a motherly woman and Virginia was perfect because she was kind, loving and inspired his work. She even looked like his mother! They loved each other even though their marriage wasn’t consummated. Again, thank you for clarifying that. I’ve studied Poe for years and I can tell you anything (nearly) you need to know about him.

      Many of the first such organizations were literary societies whose members studied literature including Greek and Latin classics (especially Greek philosophical works), so their members had at least some familiarity with those languages. Their mottoes were often written in Greek and the initials of those mottoes used to identify them. Originally there were quite a few fraternities that did NOT use Greek letters, but the Greek tradition really caught on and now you have mostly Greek style fraternities and sororities.

    I would suppose that the numbers used to determine the average ages of women in marriage were taken from the marriage certificates. Virginia was 13, but listed as 21 on their marriage certificate. The marriage certificates would be the best possible document to determine the average ages of those whom married, as they typically are publicly available documents. If other marriages during that period also contained fictitious ages, it could falsely give a higher average. I highly doubt the researchers went as far as to look at birth records as well to verify the ages of those that married. In the case of Poe and Virginia more research was conducted due to his works and popularity, which would be why we know that the marriage certificate contained a falsified age for Virginia.

They remained married for 22 years until his death at 92. She stayed unmarried afterwards and 15 years after his death commited suicide by shooting herself. One of the reasons for her prolonged depression was the absence of Picasso, whom she could never get over.That is true love.
