I love Hunter S. Thompson and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is probably my favorite book of all time (that or Catcher in the Rye or Gatsby) and Thompson’s work is the reason why I want to be a journalist. Obviously I wouldn’t go to the same extremities as he did during his career, but still, he’s my journalistic inspiration.

I saw Hunter Thompson in 1982 where he was making an appearance in the Assembly Hall on the U of I campus in Champaign, IL. He was very late and by the time he walked out on the stage the crowd was going crazy. It was similar to the scene in "Where the Buffalo Roam". I went to journalism school there, we all wanted to write like him but none of us could, not even Hunter, himself. If you read "Hell's Angels," and "F&L on the Campaign Trail" you'll see some solid journalism in the middle of all the madness. After he gained fame and lost his anonymity he couldn't pull it off anymore--wherever he went people knew who he was--he could no longer function as a candid observer.

I was raised by in an evangelical Christian environment and my parents wouldn't let me listen to music they didn't approve of or watch films or TV shows they didn't approve of. On the other hand, my mother being a voracious reader would let me read anything I wanted to. I guess she figured anything in a book couldn't be as 'evil' as music or film. Somehow when I was in my teens in the early '90s I discovered William S. Burroughs and Hunter S. Thompson. The first Burroughs book I read was "Wild Boys" which was full of homosexual sex but my mother didn't even look to see what the book was about before purchasing it for me. I had also wanted to get a Hunter S. Thompson book as well but since my 'rents had both attended FSU I figured they would know who he was and wouldn't get it for me. The next time we went to the book store though I tried my luck and I believe since the book was about the Kentucky Derby, my father being from Kentucky, was happy to purchase it. Those two authors changed my life for the better, I believe. I know Thompson had a flash of trendiness when the film version of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" was released but even at the time, I wouldn't allow myself to arbitrarily throw his books aside due to a momentary popularity. I was thrilled that I was able to introduce some of my class mates to some of the most inventive invective ever committed to paper in the 20th century. I think Burroughs and Thompson are the two most important authors of the 20th century regardless of what people say about Hemingway, Miller, Pinchon, Didion or Burgess. They changed the way people approach the craft of writing as well as expanding the purpose of writing. Modern media will be indebted to the both of them though they will never know it or choose to ignore it. I don't know why I decided to comment on this especially in such a long fashion. Oh well...

Edit: ok guys, I get it - he was awful and I'm sad and angry that he was awful. It's horrible to hear that one of your favourite authors was actually a total sicko.
Ediit 2: I still love him and I've seen little actual evidence that he did the snuff film and pedo stuff. I know he did some shit things but he's still great. Thank you to those commenters who are cooperating in reasonable discussion.

dwd ded I know he took his own life but he was still a human and it would have been great to see him cover the 2016 US elections. That woulda been neat. So yes, it's sad that he's dead. But I see your point - he died under his own terms

Those who knew and loved him agreed - it was time for him to go. He was a pain in the ass to himself and all around him. No more ball games. x

"Last man standing" and "binge drinking" makes me think you can never come back after once stepping into this role. I believe the use of a substance to define a state of mind makes it seem like you have to follow when you are securely leading. Why darken or taint a light that shines to tell you where you are, where you were, and where you are going. Clearly this is about fuel and one's amount of intake. Some people simply cannot afford it?

Suggestion: a video on the process of changing currency in a country, like after a war or when changing currency because of overinflation? Like how there was at one point a million [currency] note in post WWII Germany due to inflation, but they have since switched currency. Or even the process countries used when switching to the euro.

im sad but perhaps depressed is more fitting
constricting my movement prevents me from sitting
tighter it coils from scalp to sole
sapping my warmth and leaving me cold
bold ribbons shade my view of reality
so even a rainbow looks cloudy to me
the storm overhead the flashes and thunder
will this be the flood that takes me under
the water keeps rising as it tightens the grip
squeezing me tighter my skin starts to rip
the tides at my neck i wail in distress
im sure it seemed like a mumble at best

This is the first one of your videos that I found hard to follow and had to go back and re watch parts that went by so fast that I couldn’t understand what was the meaning of what was said. After watching a few times and rewatching some parts, I realized that I do not know what gonzo journalism means.

The music business is a cruel and shallow money
trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and
pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.
    There's also a negative side.
