      Thug. Absolutely. Flash forward [backward] to 2019, and the sort of "great woman" that Maggie Thatcher was, is now a CEO of a weapons manufacturing company. If you want to admire an English woman, leader, just go to back Elizabeth R., or maybe even Mary Queen of Scots; if you can not remember Matilda, or at least Eleanor of Aquitaine... ha! Admiring Maggie Thatcher [Ronald Reagan, any Bush, or TRUMP], is all that is needed to prove that there is no such thing as evolution, progression, advancement, growth. If a woman has a spine: it is miraculous to men that she HAS one, NOT that she uses it well. Her knuckles chafed across the concrete, just as much as any gorilla.

    @thatcheritescot Negotiation ended the cuban missile crisis. Kennedy said, "take your missiles out of Cuba, and we'll take our missiles out of Turkey" and the Soviets said ok. Crisis ended. Khruschev was no less a dictator and no less agressive than Saddam Hussein. If negotiation could work in that case, I think that's a pretty good reason to think it could work in this one.

    • @baxterbasics
      @baxterbasics 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not an equal comparison. What brought the Cuba crisis to a peaceful end was leaders on both sides becoming desperate to avoid a nuclear exchange and having to find a way out of it that still satisfied the hawks in their regimes. Had the Soviets actually invaded a US ally (as Saddam later did), Kennedy was committed to defending those allies with the nuke.

    • @TMMx
      @TMMx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@baxterbasics Taking the missiles out of Turkey didn't appease the hawks in the States. Kennedy had to do it secretly because the Republicans refused to cooperate with that strategy.

    I certainly have my criticisms of the late Lady Thatcher but she was spot on the Gulf. Saddam Hussein belonged to a political movement whose founders took inspiration from the Nazis with the view of creating a single Arab state in the Middle East. She was even more right in taking this decision and encouraging US action than she was in the Falklands.

    As the Yugoslavia of the Middle East, Iraq is a single country only while there is overwhelming military force to suppress mutually hostile ethnic and religious factions. The US supported Saddam Hussein as someone who could marshal that kind of military power in spite of his thuggish methods and in return he fought a proxy war for us against Iran. We didn't attack him because he invaded Kuwait; he'd simply outlived his usefulness.

The instruction we had during this period was that we should express no opinion on this issue and that the issue is not associated with America." From Wikipaedia "Many Muslims from other countries assisted the various mujahideen groups in Afghanistan. Some groups of these veterans have been significant factors in more recent conflicts in and around the Muslim world. Osama bin Laden, originally from a wealthy family in Saudi Arabia, was a prominent organizer and financier of an all-Arab Islamist group of foreign volunteers; his Maktab al-Khadamat funnelled money, arms, and Muslim fighters from around the Muslim world into Afghanistan"

    @123HMatty Yeh, as a Tory I'd stay away from the Saddam Hussein issue if I were you. Under the Thatcher administration, Britain secretly gave arms aid to Saddam and assisted in building a chemical plant in Iraq, despite being fully aware that Saddam Hussein's troops gassed Iranian troops. Additionally, a Tory administration, working with Washington, helped the Baathists to power originally. Oh, and the Taliban got tons of aid too, when they were fighting the Russkis.

    Thatcher had no problem with Indonesia's invasion and occupation of East Timor, an infinitely worse act of aggression than Iraq's occupation of Kuwait. Her government sold heavy amounts of arms to Suharto's dictatorship. She had no problem enriching British arms companies by having a military relationship with Turkey even though Turkey was illegally and brutally occupying Cyprus. She had no problem selling arms and subsidizing British trade with Saddam before August 2nd 1990.

    @topperheartramada Nopre, Reagan is said to have directly financed Jihadist rebels under Bin Laden fighting in Afghanistan, a fact that's had its evidence conveniently
    lost in time, but at the time it was very well documented and reported upon. Besides, this is nit-picking. The mujahadeen and the taliban are both jihadists formed from the same groups of people from which the Islamist government emerged, and were financed by the west when it suited them.
