Languages are like flames, you don't just choose. You suddenly encounter them one day and you start wanting them. I know because I'm quite promiscuous.... linguistically speaking.
Actually a bit different with me- i hated german for a year when i was learning it at school, then i hated it for another year in a different school, then i moved to a different country and all of a sudden o really really wanted to learn it and it didn't go away in 2 years. I started learning german 2 months ago and i am absolutely in love. Abd then English. I learned it for 5 years at school and it's been 4 years since i've mooved to an English speaking country and I finally actually like the language
@@ango8815 I think German is an acquired taste :)) I had a similar experience, I HATED it when I studied it at school, I let myself forget everything and then I suddenly fell in love with it.
Me: Japanese: Hi! German: What? NO me! Russian: Excuse me? ME! Mandarin: hey! ME!! French: No me! Hungarian: No me! Czech: No me! Polish: ME!!! Ukranian: ME!!!!!!! Danish: How about me! Swedish: WHAT? NO, ME!!! Norwegian: ME!! Cantonese: C'MON! ME!!!!! Arabic: ME!1 Turkish: MEEEE PLS!! Thai: Hey! Vietnamese: SHUT YOUR MOUTH ALL OF YOUUUUU!!!! English: Ill be your friend
I finally chose German, but it took me 4 tries with other languages before finding the one that really fit. Here were my 4 false starts: -Greek in college (Awful! So much stress! Teacher presented zero culture, Bible only). -Tried French using Pimsleur audio tape. So slow, gave up. Tried Rosetta Stone, still felt academic. I hate tests. -Tried Swedish self-directed. 90% just reading charts and memorizing lists. I truly loved the language, but my strategy was bound to fail. -Discovered German after I watched some videos of German girls doing ASMR videos. The more I immersed myself in German media, from fairy tales, to food, to history, the more I liked it. And there were some German words I fell in love with (like "baum" for tree, or "Adler" for Eagle), that made me knew I struck gold! I've just moved from A1 to A2 material a few days ago. I'm in no rush and am so glad I never gave up on language learning! Keep digging for your treasure!
That's so cool, I'm german and it's always nice to hear when somebody wants to learn german (: Ist Deutsch schwierig zu lernen? (I'm native, so I was always curious about that haha)
I want to learn languages, but there are so many other things I would like to learn and it's hard to choose which things are best for me to learn. Also, with most things, I obsess over learning it, but then I find something else interesting and forget about the first thing. It happens over and over. I wish I could just be somewhat interested in something, but be able to stay with that thing for a long time. Right now, I just started learning American sign language. I know the alphabet and that's it for right now. I want to learn it because I want to speak with deaf people. They can't learn other languages except different forms of sign language or written language and I think that many hearing people don't try to learn sign language. I had a deaf co-worker and it was hard to communicate with her except by writing or using basic gestures. Another reason to learn ASL is because it's silent and I don't have to worry about people hearing me talk to myself.
I have the same exact problem, I have so many interests and I will spend a whole week learning every single grammar points and facts in Russian, then lose interest over Italian because Italian is cool too, but then again Chinese looks really interesting and I always feel like I need to learn it RIGHT NOW, not later... I hope I'll stay more consistent in the future *sigh* I love your initiative btw! My cousin is deaf, but I don't see him often enough to learn sign language with him, still I think I should start as well ^^
Yep. Because then we run into lack of resources or uses of the language. I love the cool stories of uncommon languages. And this is the problems I always run into.
I think you must choose a language which you will enjoy using (reading, watching media, etc). For example I started learning Mandarin, because I like chinese kungfu movies. Still it's not much of a help as they are originally made in cantonese :D
I'm culturally cantonese, but learnt mandarin first in school. Yeah, learning vocab and chinese characters will help. The sound shifts between mandarin and cantonese are also fairly consistent, so it is possible to extrapolate what a particular word in mandarin might sound like in cantonese (though not always, and sometimes an alternative word might be used instead). That's what I did. I was told that sometimes my speech sounded weird sometimes, but it did help me progress faster than I otherwise would. In your situation, I'm not sure if you have materials for going straight to cantonese (eg. textbooks from hongkong). If you do, it might be something worth considering too.
My granpa told me that if you are excited when you heard a certain language, it's either you already knew that language or it was your native language in your past life or it will be your native language in you next life.
I agree, some languages or cultures a person is just drawn to- no reason- they just love it....why? We don't have proof yet, but it is a possibility at least that explains.
I totally agree. When I study a language I need to love the sounds, the form also be interested in the culture. It was way harder for me to make myself study Spanish at high school than now studying Japanese, Chinese and Korean at the same time. Many people from my country (Czech republic) ask me how I manage to keep up with 5 languages. It's easy actually. If the languages become part of your life, it's not hard at all. Watch movies, listen to music, make friends from these countries... Every day I am angry because of new japanese grammar or Chinese sentence, because I can't make my voice say the tones correctly. However, when I finally manage it, it's the best feeling in the world!!! Don't give up. Life without challenges is boring.
Já to chápu. Miluju Česko a miluju Čechy
You made me really happy. I'm Hungarian and everybody always said how ugly is my language. At the same time because Hungarian is my native language every other languages looked so difficult before I learned English. Now it is easier, especially because I can find good language learning books in English :)
I plan to learn Hungarian. I once saw a youtube video of some medieval-era scene, and it sounded cool. I'm Spanish. I also recently played as the Magyars in my realistic map of Europe for Age of Empires 2, in part to see their point of view in the middle of Europe. It's very nice.

how did you learn Korean? I am currently learning it ang still mastering reading hangeul. I go to kpop idols' insta and uses it as a reading practice hahaha
Oh I'm fluent in French (been in french immersion classes for 10 years) and it's actually really fun. It's a paint with all the verb endings and rules but I still like it. Hope you enjoy learning it

The three are so good. That's a dilemma ! If you live in North America : French (Québec, Acadia, Cajun country, Haiti, French West Indies, French Guiana, Dominique island, Saint-Lucia island) Spanish (2/3 of the continent) are both useful. Korean if there are a certain number of American/Canadian Koreans near your home (and for travelling to Korea). If you live in Europe, I would say French. Then it depends if you have connection or a special feeling with one of these three cultures. Your choice will be the best. Good studying.
I totally understand your struggle is their any way you could learn two languages at the same time. For example, korean and French or Spanish and Korean. Do not learn French and Spanish together as it will confuse you. Currently, I am learning French and Japanese language, I live in Canada so French language is for career opportunities and Japanese language is just for fun.
Languages I speak: 🇬🇧🇳🇱 Languages I’m learning (all because of school 😂): 🇩🇪🇫🇷🇬🇷, also Latin Languages I want to learn: 🇰🇷🇪🇸 Saw someone else have a comment like this, and I wanted to do it to! I have 6 languages at school, but 2 of them I already know.
Hey guys, if you prefer reading a blog post instead of watching me ramble, here's a blog post I wrote with all my tips related to choosing a language to learn. lindiebotes.com/2019/09/26/how-to-choose-language-to-learn/
Thank you for this video! It's true that finding a language that you are excited about is key. After speaking Spanish for over 10 years, I still smile to myself when I have a conversation with a stranger or watching La Frontera Verde without subtitles.
I am totaly obsessed with manhwa, manhua and manga. That is why I want to learn chinese, japanese and korean. But I don't know how to start. I do really little steps to my goal
Your situation is the same as me🥺 i read manga, manhwa, manhua + japanese, korean and chinese drama/movie too. So i always want to master those 3 languages, but IDK WHICH LANGUAGE I SHOULD START WITH😭😫
Could you make a video like “Study Vietnamese With Me” or “How To Study Vietnamese Vocab” please? I’m interested in seeing the differences in how you learn languages for fun and when you are studying for an exam.
I want to know a bunch of languages, but for now I'm focusing on Spanish because I live in the US so it's the most useful language for me to learn. Plus I love Latin American culture
I do not love Latin American culture, which is why I was so against learning Spanish in school. I ended up in French instead and i fell in love with it.
I'm also a passionate language learner and I'm so glad you like and want to learn hungarian, I've never heard anyone saying it before (either they don't like it or don't even try) it makes me really happy and grateful for being a native. Thank you for your insight, your videos are going to inspire and motivate me through the quarantine 😁 ❤️
Very few people actually ever heard it. It's maybe the most underrated culture in Europe along with (modern) Greece, Iceland and Ireland which are very tiny in number of speakers though (don't know anything about Bask/Euskara), because Hungarians also have one of the greatest musical traditions and are good in sciences - dozens of great matematicians were from Hungary. So it's one of few relatively small languages, where it makes sense to study it apart from purely linguistical reasons.
Every language you start studying, remember that you’ll have to use every one of those languages every day in order to maintain or improve the skill. So if you’re doing 10 languages, that’s 10 hours of time needed every day to keep up the skill. So unless you’re single with no family and only a part time job, it’s impossible
@@lewisdrummond204 definitely not “impossible“ but very hard. Practice similar languages together each weekday and for the rest use media or music each day until you get to the weekday to practice it
@@lewisdrummond204 I'm planning about 50 languages at the same time including some ancient ones, and I have a baby and a full-time job. Progress will be a snail's pace for all languages but on occasion I shall have boosts methinks, like from vacations. If I don't learn them at the same time, I won't be able to compare their difficulties and I will have to wait too long to enjoy them all. "Less is more" of course, and "quality over quantity" and "A jack of all trades is a master of none" except I COULD master some. It just will take more sacrifice. Omg the lingodeer plushie😍 i want one😍😍 And the video is brilliant! You explained it really well! I have been learning korean for over two years now and i never regretted it as I chose it for the right reasons. I also started learning japanese but i eventually needed to put that on hold because i didn’t have enough time to keep studying both at the same time. And thats okay sometimes! I am at a level with korean now where i don’t need to just sit down and study to keep practicing the language, and it has also become a big part of my life. Fun ways to practice it now are calling or texting with my friends, reading webtoons, reading blog posts, or watching korean youtube for example. I never get bored of it because it was fascinating to me in the beginning.
2:30 this point is soooo important! I started learning Spanish because I’m American and it is spoken throughout the US and in many, many countries. But I was much more interested in Italian. I chose Spanish for the fact it has more speakers ... as a result I got bored and stopped after 4 months. You really have to LOVE the language and have a deep desire to work towards fluency. Otherwise you’ll never get there! You’ll give up after a little while. And then you’ve just wasted time. If I could go back in time I’d choose Italian.
i hope you have made the choice to continue italian. it is logical to go for the language that is most spoken throughout your country, but learn the language your heart tells you.
The easlist language is the one the one you have the most interest in. Its doesnt matter how similar a language is to your native language. If you dont like the sound of it, its going to be hatd for you.
I’m taking Spanish in school, but I still feel as if the language chose me! It’s so beautiful and I can’t wait to master it. When I’m fluent, I want to start learning Italian because I’m obsessed with the culture and language. Good luck everyone!
Yeeeyyyy Hungariaaan ❤️❤️❤️ I loved it, when you said that no language is more important than another one. It drives me crazy, when people state stuff like this based on statistics and numbers. It is something personal for everyone and it's just not possible to generalize. Try to convince someone learning Estonian with Estonian roots, that Chinese is more useful these days :D
So many languages to learn, so little time! Thank you for this video Lindie! I speak French and English fluently, and I started learning Korean 2 years ago but I keep having urges to learn other languages, especially Kazakh and Taiwanese Mandarin right now! The lack of ressources and native speakers are making me hesitate, but I’m really passionate about them!
French, Swedish, and recently Korean are the ones I love! I used to only be interested in European languages until this new girl at my school knew Korean and offered to teach me. I already know English and I'm learning Spanish at school but Spanish never interested me even though my parents went to Guatemala multiple times for missions. Ever since I was little, I've loved France, England, and Sweden but obviously, I already know English so that ruled out England. And I never even remotely thought about learning an Asian language. It's not like I hated the countries or the people, the languages just weren't calling me. Until I had the opportunity to learn Korean and immediately became more fascinated. I still like European languages more and I'm not too invested in Korean shows or songs but I'm getting there slowly but surely. I'm excited to see what doors God will open through this experience and hopefully I can become more open minded about other languages. I still love French and Swedish and I really want to study abroad in both countries but I'm slowly working towards Korean as well. Only God knows what will happen!
I feel ya on Hungarian. I find a "magyar nyelv" a truly fascinating, very cool language, from the spelling to the (surprisingly rational, though not easy) grammar rules and just how it sounds. That being said holy crap, it is a difficult and momumental language to learn. For people wondering, there's essentially zero cognates to any other languages, the noun cases are totally insane on top of verb conjugations similar to French. *But* it is 100% phonetic so learning to read/pronounce it actually isn't hard, and even though it has 36(I think) letters in the alphabet, there's actually a relatively easy progression system to pronouncing the extra ä ë ü é è letters, so you can learn to write and pronounce written Hungarian pretty quick. Also Hungarians are SOO eager to teach and help you learn. Every single one I talked to was unbelievably eager to be helpful. You will have an overabundance of native speakers wanting to help you. Also many Hungarians do not speak English super well, so you can help them by teaching English if they are interested. Just beautiful, amazing people. Here's a beautiful example of Hungarian poetry: th-cam.com/video/ga_ucCLMHrc/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=M5 *I forgot I commented on that that video I linked 3 years ago saying I was learning Hungarian (in hungarian), and there's still people replying up to 2 weeks ago!! I'm blown away lol. I had a bunch of Hungarian convos on the reply chain. Damn I might get back into a Magyar nyelv*
I feel this dilemma deeply. I love korean and Japanese! The language is beautiful, the culture is amazing and the people are so interesting. I'm in college but study Spanish for the practical side. Where I lived in the states there were a lot of Latin Americans and I love the spanish culture and the people so I want to learn that as well😅 So korean, Spanish and Japanese are the languages I love. Yet it's so difficult to find people to practice with.
I’m a Japanese and I have a similar issue with you in terms of finding a good partner to practice the language with. Recently I’ve started learning Swedish but Im struggling to motivate myself for it.
I know Mandarin, English and Bahasa Melayu. Took Japanese last year but dropped it. Now with the Coronavirus, I am re-learning Japanese again. And am gonna learn Tagalog, Thai, Vietnamese and Cantonese so that I can interact with my colleagues better.
@@kenihd8538 Yes indeed tough. I do love Slavic languages and I'd like Russian too after. I use Pimsleur as I am rather auditive for my learning. It fact my key is having automatisms for that kind of languages (as I don't know these by knowing the roots). And by cultural interests (from old medieval Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia to post-Yugoslav States)
@@fivantvcs9055 I also am doing Serbian. How is Pimsleur? I considered using it, but couldn't justify the large upfront cost. I've been doing my own learning, which is, admittedly slow.
@@DS-tl3qe Hello D S . I learn much by the auditive in order to keep in mind the first important words , sentences and phrases (to know, when... lunch...). Pimsleur does make you repeat a lot the words and sentences and also syllabe by syllabe for tough words. There are 30 lessons of 28 minutes. I can estimate you are near A1 level after the 30 lessons. If you're auditive and you need automatisms for starting a language,it's good. Perhaps the other tool which is cheaper is Assimil Croate (in French) with CDs for more lessons, with exercices and a claimed B2 level at the end but let's say B1. And you have it all for a lower price (76,12 US$ on Amazon USA, I've just checked it). Personally I don't have the Assimil Croate but I know Assimil methods are good (at least for European languages)

Hi Lindie I already speak 5 languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish, French and Italian) but it's been more than 15 years since I've learned my last one, Italian. So, I've decided to learn one language each year (I need more focus to feel comfortable). So in 2020 I'm learning Dutch, and 2021 will be Russian (my grandfather was Russian and I can barely utter a couple of sentences). The thing is from 2022 onward. I can't choose between Swedish, Romanian, Lithuanian and Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian, and that's only in Europe! Not to mention Afrikaans, Farsi, Arabic... Ah well, whichever I choose, it will be fun, I hope. :)
Sign language keeps being a practical one for me to learn. I have a down syndrome sister so our family have always been around special needs communities which have a lot of signing people. I love having more ways to connect to people so there's my reason to learn a new language.
2:44 - For me, it would be spanish and korean . I don't know why but those 2 languages are absolutely amazing to me ! If you speak one of them (or maybe both) , you're really lucky . 4:09 waww I'm impressed
I felt it when you talked about resources for a language, I don't speak my mother tongue(weird when you think about it, but it's my native language) and the ones speaking it are only around 1000 people(if I had to guess) in the whole world, so the experience in learning it is so different than like, learning Spanish. We basically have to make resources by doing field trips ourselves, discovering grammar rules along the way of learning it. it's just...damn... p.s. My native language is called temarapuyuma, an Austronesian language, total population: around 14500

This video really increases my passion and my curiosity even more because the passion of learning particular languages is a fantastic motivation! I was learning Japanese for the first time and not really passionate, and then I learned French, the beauty moved my heart to learn more language.. then Spanish, Italian, and others, and finally Japanese! Truly, passion in learning language is expanding in their own way. Choose the language you have passion first! And visiting the city that you love very much, that makes us passionate too to learn that city's language. My passionate in Cantonese and Mandarin escalated after I traveled to HK and Singapore.
Trying to learn Japanese right now which would be my third one. Spanish is my second one and it honestly changed my life. I have dreams in spanish now which is weird, but really cool.
I started learning Scottish Gaelic only 3 days ago, so I shouldn't speak too hastily, but... I am absolutely eating it up. I have a real interest in visiting Scotland someday, just found out a large part of my ancestry comes from Scotland, and the more I hear the language the more I feel a tug to understand it. I honestly may never use it, but I love that I'm connecting to a language after 4 other language learning tries, and that I'm contributing hopefully to keeping a dying language alive.
If you speak portuguese it should be relatively easy to learn spanish. About 90% percent of the vocabulary is almost identical and since portuguese is more complex it's easier to learn spanish than vice versa. So yeah, I would start with spanish.

I speak Arabic and I tried to choose a language close to Arabic but after that I thought no! it will not give me the knowledge and will not widen my gaze about other communities in the world, this helped me to choose the language I learn now ( Finnish ).
Ichbinhier depends on the country you want to go to! Egyptian is at least understood by all the other Arabic countries (as far as I know), so that’s an option. I think choose the on you like listening to more and the one with more resources. Standard is helpful because official stuff and much literature is in standard. Also, everyone will understand you. But you’ll sound a little funny to some, since it’s so classical and serious. Still, it’s very beautiful, and if you learn standard, you’ll have lots of resources and can then just go to whatever Arabic country you want and pick up the dialect there, whether it’s one of the gulf countries or Lebanon or Egypt, etc. Keep in mind the gulf countries also have different dialects, but aren’t as different as, say, a gulf accent and Egyptian. If you choose a gulf accent, I’d recommend Kuwaiti, since they have lots of soap operas and therefore the accent is also widely understood. Although Kuwaiti as well can be split into two main accents, the language of the people of the dessert and the language of the people who settled by the sea, but they are very, very similar, so don’t worry about it. Then there’s Moroccan Arabic...but you won’t be understood at all by other Arab or other countries. Like maybe a word out of ten of what you say will be understood.
@@ichbinhier355 Think about like Arabs I mean like standard is the formal and any dialect you choose is informal, because standard is used also in Arab countries, if you want you can choose dialects that are closer to standard Arabic. and for example if you want to say I want the standard one is أريد and the dialect will be ( mine is Saudi dialect ) so will be in my dialect أبا or أبي or أبغى all of them can use it here, and about Egyptian the recommendations are because of Cinema and Art that all Arabs watch it but all dialects are understandable by Arabs except: Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, so they use something called ( white dialect " اللهجة البيضاء " ) which is combination between standard Arabic and the dialect or dialects there is no rule for use. so you can get benefit from Fusha ( Standard Arabic ) and not look weird when you speak standard only. after that you can choose any dialect because you will have clear picture about what dialect to learn, and believe me it's really easy and I don't know why people make it hard for themselves, I agree it looks hard from outside but after you learn it like levels you will see how easy it is and just needs plan, and you can also get Arab friend that will help you a lot! so my recommendation is learn standard Arabic after that choose the dialect you are interested in and just do combinations between the word you learnt previously from standard Arabic ( like instead of using أريد in the sentence use أبغى ) as which white dialect and by time you will be able to speak both of them fluently, just think about it like formal and informal. sorry it was a long respond. and good luck ( بالتوفيق ).
My language picking journey: I’m a native English speaker and I’m intermediate in Japanese and learning French and Arabic. Sometimes interest leads to learning a language. I love Japanese for its culture and entertainment and the way it sounds and it was my first foreign language and fun. This channel helped a lot. I started learning French because I really wanted to be in contact with the other end of the world. I love geography and wanted to learn about many countries and many types of people, so my next language I wanted to be international. I picked French because if francophone and wanted to know Europe region better. However my interest eventually branched to Arabic because I made amazing friends from Morocco and ones that live in France that helped so much and we became really close. They started teaching me Arabic too and the more I listened the more I liked it. Eventually I added Arabic as a language I’m learning and Egypt and other Arab countries were so much nicer than I expected. I had some incredible conversations and the way they teach it is funny 😆 I have learned so much about arab countries and Arab people have helped me grow as a person and have so much talking and knowledge that Arabic maybe my favorite language now. And the Arabic courses on memrise were great and people taught me it very well. Now have a short period of time I know lots of basics and lots of progress. I found my actual motivation to learn languages is learning about people and talking and learning about the world and Arabic is one of the best. I now focus on Japanese in classes and Arabic in free time and sometimes study French. To anyone that read all this I told this story to share that your experiences and how happy you are with the language will branch you to the languages you’ll like. :)
Languages I speak: Spanish and English Languages I'm learning: English and Danish Languages I want to be fluent: English, Danish, Italian, German and French. I think I need help
Omg I'm half Danish! It makes me really happy that you're learning it because not many people consider it, but it's such a lovely language. I was raised in the UK and very sadly not raised bilingual so I'm trying to improve too :)
Hi Lindie! I don't usually comment here on TH-cam, but I feel like I have to thank you for all the time and effort you put into making these videos! I'm such a big fan of yours, you're one of my inspirations! I speak Spanish, English and French, and I've decided to make Korean my project for this year, I started learning it on January 1rst and I don't even know why, I'm not very into kpop music or kdramas or anything but I was looking for a new language to learn and Korean turned up out of the blue and now I've fallen in love with it, I think it's my favorite language so far. I want to become a polyglot one day and that's why I admire you so much, thank you for being such a beautiful human being. 감사합니다 린디 누나!♥ PS: If you need any help with your Spanish, I'd be glad to help!
I'm a native Ukrainian and Russian speaker, English is my second language as I live in Canada. I'm learning Mandarin Chinese in uni, also considering learning Japanese cause I'm a huge anime fan
I am 6 years into my journey with Finnish. The way it makes me feel is how you seem to feel with Hungarian. It's been frustrating but also really rewarding, and it really has changed my life. I also know some German, and I would really love to be fluent in it as well. My family also speaks Mennonite Low German, and I would love to be able to speak that as well, but it's hard to get any of my cousins to help me practice because they're so used to speaking to me in English, and there are hardly any resources for it.
Languages I know: 🇧🇷, 🇬🇧 Languages I want to learn: 🇨🇳, 🇰🇷(?) I am seriously considering learning Mandarin, but I was not sure if I should, I’m kind of scared of the language because of the characters lol and I thought I could be like wasting time (a chronic fear that I have, to waste time) but this video helped me so much, especially the parts “what language makes you feel excited when you hear it” and “what language do you see yourself speaking” and the answer to that is Mandarin! I thought about learning Japanese because I like the language + Japanese culture but I now realize that I am not very passionate about this language and I don’t really see myself using it, except for understanding anime without subtitles, I wouldn’t do much/enjoy this language. With Korean I think I could still study ? Because I consume lots of Korean media, I think im familiarized with the language, but im a bit lazy to actually study 😂 so maybe my Korean learning process will be stuck for a while. Thank you for the great video! ❤️❤️
I've definitely been struggling to decide, and stick with my decision for language learning. lol I honestly just love all the languages, which I'm sure a lot of people can relate to. I decided for 2021 I finally want to study and be on the path to being bilingual. I'm a native English speaker so I think I'm first going to choose from a list of languages in closer relation to English. I really loved this video because I am such a perfectionist and get overwhelmed when making decisions, and this really helped me to logically map out my core motivations for learning. thanks for such a lovely video :D!
I get excited when I hear Swedish, Norwegian, German, French and Czech, I love those languages so much and I also love the countries where they come from as well

I lived in China for 5 years and didn't learn much Mandarin. I regret that so much! Now, everytime I hear someone speak Mandarin, I get super excited and now I am learning it bit by bit
I speak both English and Spanish and tried learning Portuguese but I actually found it quite difficult given to the similarities it has with Spanish so I'd actually find myself using portuñol. I'd love to pick it up again some time because it's a beautiful language, but I think it's not the right language for me to learn at the moment.
aww, you come off as soooo humble and genuine! I love it. You are so inspiring to me and watching your advice videos really give me more motivation to not give up on learning Korean seriously! Thank you and stay blessed. xoxo
Your advice make crazy sense to me, that is so true that I should call you a language genius. I am hanging in on the Korean language journey for a year and a half now, sometimes I don't even know why I can stay for so long, and the reason? Just exactly how your mention in this video, because I am a Chinese speaker and also I love Kpop, I love Kpop songs, I love commenting and using the language to my idols's Instagram page, this language makes me happy, and as you said, I am excited when I hear people speaking Korean on the street even though I am living in Canada right now, so yeah there you go, fit all the reason for me to constantly motivate myself to continue the learning journey, and there's is probably why I can't start learning Japanese because I am not obsess with animation, and I feel like one of Korean or Japanese would be enough for me to handle. I don't know why but I think learning a language is not for your friend, perhaps you can discuss something fun around that language culture thing, but in the long run, the language that you learn you acquire is preciously only owned by yourselves, it is priceless and a priceless journey, like an eye-opening to the new world, this, in my opinion, is truly amazing and how satisfaction truly comes from in my deep heart, it is not about buying a new car, but it is about the continue process and way of learning a language that you truly immense and love, if you think in this way, life would be easier and happier
I'm Italian and I love English💕 I've been learning English for about 8 years, since I was 6. Now I fell in love with another language: Greek💘💘💘 The language that I can understand without study it is Spanish, because Spanish and Italian are very similar. Spanish people I love your language 💓🌹 I love French and I study it at school 🌷 I want to learn German🌸
Currently I'm learning French, and I really really want to speak it, read it like a native speaker. Whenever I look at the French texts I think "how the hell I don't know this language, it's just so so beautiful". So there is no way that I won't learn it. After French I want to learn Japanese, 'cause of Kanji. Kanji is so beautiful, that's the main reason to learn Japanese for me.
Woow, woow, I am amazed I found someone that is learning the languages I am personally interested in. I am currently learning both french and Japanese.
@@williamjames4031 Ooh, I'm currently learning French, but I'll resume my Japanese study when I'll be good in French; btw I know Hiragana, Katakana and some Kanji. Are you learning both at the same time ?
@@Aditya-te7oo no, I already have 10 months in the French language and I know hirginana and Katakana and a little bit of Kanji. But, now I am totally focus on learning to speak Japanese language.
It's very difficult to choose a language. But if you want to start :) we offer conversational courses to learn Spanish and Portuguese fast. All our teachers are natives of Latin America and they love teaching.
True. I started learning spanish about eight years ago. I liked it a little bit and I got to know a nice girl from Peru online. She didn't know english very well. But as she got busier I had no one to talk to. I gave up years ago. Now I'm more passionate and determined learning portuguese. Because of the music, the football, the people, etcetera. And I found out listening is very important from the start. And I know more people I can practice with.
I want to learn Mandarin, Malay, Icelandic, Japanese, and Klingon. I'm going to learn all of them eventually nut this video helped me narrow down which ones I should kearn first. My mom speaks Mandarin and Malay (she is a Chinese from Malaysia) So I think I'll learn those first. Thanks for the help!
I clicked on this video thinking I already knew what languages I'd like to learn, but it was actually quite inspiring. It made me think "what exactly is my motivation to learning each language?" English is my second language and the one I use the most in life, despite still living in Brazil, since I consume a lot of content in it, have friends who speak it, and most importantly I'm an English teacher. I started studying Spanish because I could take a course for free at the school where I work. The course was only a year and a half long, and since my native language is very similar to it, and I really dedicated myself to studying it during that time, I was able to reach a high intermediate to advanced level, depending on who you ask (I've got a C1 certificate but I don't believe that's really my level). Once the course was over I completely abandoned the language because I don't actually particularly like it and don't consume much media in it. My motivation to practice it is just not forgetting what I've learned, and my motivation to start was simply that it was easy and free, and I love my Spanish teacher. Now I've realized that my goal with it is not to become as good at it as I am in English, it's just to keep on being conversational in it and to improve my listening skills in different accents. Now if I ask myself what languages I really have a strong motivation to learn, it's obvious: Japanese and Korean. Japanese because I just love the language, I love how it sounds and I think the writing looks really cute, and I like to try to speak it, and I already have some idea of how it works, because I've tried learning it a few times before. Also I still watch anime sometimes. And Korean because I love kpop and I consume music and variety shows in the language on the daily. So your video made me realize that my goal with these last two languages doesn't have to be proficiency. I'd like to be conversational in Japanese, and to be able to read manga and watch anime. That's basically it. And in Korean all I want is to understand lyrics and what idols are saying, I don't care much about communicating. Also I've always thought I wanted to learn French just because everyone seems to value the language so much, but the truth is I don't really care about it. I was just looking for another language that wasn't Asian to have as a goal so I could come across as some kind of "respectable polyglot" someday 😅
I definitely agree when it comes to considering the passion factor. I'm italian and I tried hard to learn Spanish for 2 years (you might think it should be easy, right?). I was doing it without any passion for that language, so then I decided to drop it and start learning croatian, definitely less spoken but I like it much more.
Fully agree, you bring the horse to the well but you can't force him to drink. I was trying with Spanish too but I just couldn't find the drive to really get into it.
If you study a language without passion or because you have to (as in school), chances are you're gonna end up quitting and maybe hating that language. Spanish is such an amazing language to learn, and it's very similar to Italian, maybe you were looking to learn a totally different language than yours.
You talked about hearing a language and feeling excited about it, and that's exactly what i feel with german, even if it's difficult, i just think is so cool.
I went from Japanese to learning Chinese and Vietnamese with a little Korean then went from those to French and Italian then from Spanish to Portuguese there is so many different languages I wanna learn but the one's I know the most is mandarin Chinese and vietnamese❤

I guess so. It's hard to objectively assess the beauty of your native language :)
@@MVahag I like the sounds. And I like the roots not so far with Persian, Kurdish or Old Hittite. Very old History and culture!
I finally chose German, but it took me 4 tries with other languages before finding the one that really fit. Here were my 4 false starts:
-Greek in college (Awful!
That's so cool, I'm german and it's always nice to hear when somebody wants to learn german (:

@@art.65367 Ich lerne Deutsch auch, seit fünf Monaten ununterbrochen von nun an, das war schwieriger and der Anfang aber heute es ist ziemlich leicht ich könnte sagen.
Ich glaube ich bin auf der Niveau B1 und ich will mehr und mehr lernen, ich liebe dieses Sprache.
That's only three false starts
Looking at the words that you liked from German, I think you would really enjoy learning old English
Are you still learning?
I hope I'll stay more consistent in the future *sigh*
I love your initiative btw! My cousin is deaf, but I don't see him often enough to learn sign language with him, still I think I should start as well ^^
You are the only one person who described my problem so well
Woah I'm exactly like that. After a few days I lose interest in learning a language and then another language interests me.
I have the exact same problem, and with ASL too!
Ancient English will be spoken in the future? Nice!
*when you’re learning an endangered language*

I find Chinese women to be extremely pretty but I do not enjoy learning Mandarin, I enjoy Japanese due to animes.
Yup. The best thing about Chinese and Japanese. Once you do one, you've already done the hardest part of the other. Memorizing a tone of characters
But Mandarin will help you after for learning Cantonese
@@fivantvcs9055 Yup, that's the long-term plan :D
Reincarnation justifies the caste system.
such bullshit
I love this idea ❤
@@scintillam_dei It has been used that way in some cultures- BUT what if it's true? Perhaps? We don't know do we...

Korean if there are a certain number of American/Canadian Koreans near your home (and for travelling to Korea). If you live in Europe, I would say French.
I always think like: “why cant i just do 10 at the same time” because there are so many options!
"There is nothing impossible to him who will try." -Alexander the Great.

Omg the lingodeer plushie😍 i want one😍😍
And the video is brilliant!

Hey ! I am french native speaker, speaking english spanish and italian. I am currently learnng japanese at the moment so we could trade mb ?
why korean?
Here's a beautiful example of Hungarian poetry: th-cam.com/video/ga_ucCLMHrc/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=M5
*I forgot I commented on that that video I linked 3 years ago saying I was learning Hungarian (in hungarian), and there's still people replying up to 2 weeks ago!!
Where I lived in the states there were a lot of Latin Americans and I love the spanish culture and the people so I want to learn that as well😅
So korean, Spanish and Japanese are the languages I love. Yet it's so difficult to find people to practice with.

Hello Lindie. I hope, this is not so tough with the corona in Singapore. For myself I have eventually chosen Serbian.
Srecno, jako je tezak jezik cak i za neke ljude koji su srbi/hrvati/bosanci/crno-gorci.
And you have it all for a lower price (76,12
US$ on Amazon USA, I've just checked it). Personally I don't have the Assimil Croate but I know Assimil methods are good (at least for European languages)
Good luck studying💖 sretnoo ti

this video gave me so much motivation to start learning one of the hundreds of languages i've been meaning to learn for years. thank you so much!
Hi Lindie
I already speak 5 languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish, French and Italian) but it's been more than 15 years since I've learned my last one, Italian.
Lindie, you have enlightened me! Thank you!
Sign language keeps being a practical one for me to learn. I have a down syndrome sister so our family have always been around special needs communities which have a lot of signing people. I love having more ways to connect to people so there's my reason to learn a new language.

and the ones speaking it are only around 1000 people(if I had to guess) in the whole world, so the experience in learning it is so different than like, learning Spanish.

Reasons why:
Why Korean - I love the songs of a Korean Rock Band called DAY6, I've been a Korean Music Fan since 2011. Not really much into K-drama's, more on to music and variety shows.
Why Japanese - started learning this one before because the way it's spoken is so easy! But their alphabets says otherwise. Hiragana and Katakana is fine but Kanji...
Why Spanish - some of the words here are close to my native language (tagalog) but I have no idea what Spanish culture is like so... but I want to learn it anyways.
That's all.

When you mentioned that Hungarian is so beautiful, my heart melt! :)
I speak Arabic and I tried to choose a language close to Arabic but after that I thought no! it will not give me the knowledge and will not widen my gaze about other communities in the world, this helped me to choose the language I learn now ( Finnish ).
I have a question for you, if I decide to learn Arabic, which dialect should I learn? or is it convenient to study the standard one?
@@mariamo7387 thank you for your recommendations :)

I am seriously considering learning Mandarin, but I was not sure if I should, I’m kind of scared of the language because of the characters lol and I thought I could be like wasting time (a chronic fear that I have, to waste time) but this video helped me so much, especially the parts “what language makes you feel excited when you hear it” and “what language do you see yourself speaking” and the answer to that is Mandarin! I thought about learning Japanese because I like the language + Japanese culture but I now realize that I am not very passionate about this language and I don’t really see myself using it, except for understanding anime without subtitles, I wouldn’t do much/enjoy this language.

The language that I can understand without study it is Spanish, because Spanish and Italian are very similar. Spanish people I love your language 💓🌹
I love French and I study it at school 🌷
I want to learn German🌸

@@williamjames4031 Ooh. Good luck for your study.
It's very difficult to choose a language. But if you want to start :) we offer conversational courses to learn Spanish and Portuguese fast. All our teachers are natives of Latin America and they love teaching.
Ich würde es lieben, Madarin zu lernen

Q "Which language should you learn"
A the one you reallly really realllly realllllllllly want to, or you wont finish, especially if its your first.
I started to learn French language bcz I was depressed and alone.
Rakesh Mhatre I started learning Korean due to the quarantine and being bored and alone
@@stingrae919 Imao I was learning for a year and a half- it’s pretty easy
Quarantine and bothersome made me learn Spanish lol
I clicked on this video thinking I already knew what languages I'd like to learn, but it was actually quite inspiring. It made me think "what exactly is my motivation to learning each language?"
English is my second language and the one I use the most in life, despite still living in Brazil, since I consume a lot of content in it, have friends who speak it, and most importantly I'm an English teacher.
I'm a Vietnamese and I'm very happy when you show respect and love to my language
