    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) leads a bloody slave revolt to take over the ship La Amistad.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    This Steven Spielberg-directed exploration into a long-ago episode in African-American history recounts the trial that followed the 1839 rebellion aboard the Spanish slave ship Amistad and captures the complex political maneuverings set in motion by the event. Filmed in New England and Puerto Rico, the 152-minute drama opens with a pre-credit sequence showing Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) and the other Africans in a violent takeover of the Amistad. Captured, they are imprisoned in New England where former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman), viewing the rebels as "freedom fighters," approaches property lawyer Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), who attempts to prove the Africans were "stolen goods" because they were kidnapped. Running for re-election, President Martin Van Buren (Nigel Hawthorne) overturns the lower court's decision in favor of the Africans. Former President John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) is reluctant to become involved, but when the case moves on to the Supreme Court, Adams stirs emotions with a powerful defense. The storyline occasionally cuts away to Spain where the young Queen Isabella (Anna Paquin) plays with dolls; she later debated the Amistad case with seven U.S. presidents. The character portrayed by Morgan Freeman is a fictional composite of several historical figures. For authentic speech, the Africans speak the Mende language, subtitled during some scenes but not others.

    This movie is a must-see for those interested in legal dramas and/or the historical genre. For a modern-era legal film sharing some of the same themes, check out Ghosts of Mississippi; a true story depicting the efforts of civil rights activist Megdar Evers' widow to attain justice for her husband's murder with the help of a white Mississippi lawyer. La Amistad is the far heavier of the two -- and grander in scope -- but both will hold your interest throughout and adequately address the prevailing cultural perspectives of their relative settings.

  • @Mike-01234
    @Mike-01234 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    If you read about the true store of the Amistad it wasn't a real slave ship it was a cargo ship. The slaves were workers being brought from Cuba to work at a plantation which the ship was bringing goods to America. The ships crew had no experience in transporting slaves they were not kept below like wood planks depicted in the movie such as the large slave trade ships had before slave trade was banned in early 19th century. This is why the slaves were able to overpower the crew and take the ship. The slaves found a nail were able to un-shackle their irons. The crew foolishly left a box of machetes right next to the slaves once they were free of their irons they attacked.

      I cant believe this religion thing is being carried on like it is.. When has it ever done something positive for anyone or anything. Its just some ideas written down by a few perverted loonatics that other mugs believed ...... Thousands of years ago. Accept the truth and realise... Open your eyes a bit we share a planet with other creatures on this beautiful blue ball and were are the only mugs to contrive such cockamamie horse crap.
      The trouble with us humans is that it is too easy to be nice.. It will never happen on a mass scale we only know how to ruin, hurt and destroy and brain dead ignorant scum, like your self, need an excuse to cause trouble to get your point accross.. The bible says so it must be true.

    it was hundreds of years ago, i know its totally wrong and evil, but humanity was evolving, of course this shit happened, look at ancient rome, this shit happened thousands of years before this. dark ages, the tower of london, this type of behavior took a big chunk in the human history book sorry to say. im very glad we live in a world today where it doesn't exist nearly as much (im sure a bit still does) but i hope god forgives those who did it in the past and i hope the souls of the innocentslaves are at peace.
