John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) invokes the Declaration of Independence and the forefathers of the United States in his plea that all men are born free.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This Steven Spielberg-directed exploration into a long-ago episode in African-American history recounts the trial that followed the 1839 rebellion aboard the Spanish slave ship Amistad and captures the complex political maneuverings set in motion by the event. Filmed in New England and Puerto Rico, the 152-minute drama opens with a pre-credit sequence showing Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) and the other Africans in a violent takeover of the Amistad. Captured, they are imprisoned in New England where former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman), viewing the rebels as "freedom fighters," approaches property lawyer Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), who attempts to prove the Africans were "stolen goods" because they were kidnapped. Running for re-election, President Martin Van Buren (Nigel Hawthorne) overturns the lower court's decision in favor of the Africans. Former President John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) is reluctant to become involved, but when the case moves on to the Supreme Court, Adams stirs emotions with a powerful defense. The storyline occasionally cuts away to Spain where the young Queen Isabella (Anna Paquin) plays with dolls; she later debated the Amistad case with seven U.S. presidents. The character portrayed by Morgan Freeman is a fictional composite of several historical figures. For authentic speech, the Africans speak the Mende language, subtitled during some scenes but not others.

I can believe it! Here's a guy who, as part of his normal routine, whenever he gets a script, sits down and reads the whole thing from cover to cover 200 times! And that's before he even starts working on his character!

@@jonathanthomas4182 John Adams would 100 percent be a Dem today. If you disagree you simply don't understand how the two party system flip flops throughout history usually due to one major political issue. One side realizes the others position is more popular and they go further in that direction.
Sir Anthony Hopkins was perfect in the role as john quincy Adams
I love the genuine look of awe on Djimon Hounsou’s face while Anthony Hopkins says his lines.
Spielberg apparently was so overawed and inspired by Hopkins doing this whole speech in one take that he refused to call him Tony as everyone else did on set and insisted on calling him Sir Anthony for the rest of the shoot.
That's respect right there.
His method is to know what scene is being shot the next day, and he practices alone in a mirror for 4 or 5 hours over and over, honing the tempo, the tone, the rythym, the gestures, so that when he gets in front of a camera, he is able to repeat what he rehearsed as though it were a piano piece, note for note, using muscle memory. Most of his acting involves no physical contact with the other actors. Indeed, you could almost block out everyone in the room with him, and his performance would remain masterful. A true orator.
He was especially deferential to Sir Richard Attenborough too. The director who ‘beat’ him at the Oscars with Gandhi and then went on to become a good friend of his and even act under him as Richard Hammond in Jurassic Park.

This is the hands down the best monologue i have ever seen in film.

Anthony Hopkins blew me away with this role, great actor!
I remember crying when I first watched this scene. JQA is one of my heroes anyway, but the way Hopkins played him in this film... and especially as he confronted his father's hallowed legacy - one that he took very seriously... yeah, it broke me.
Good actors play a character, great actors bring them to life, & this one moved me like few others ever have. Sir Anthony brought JQA out of the mists of the past, & set him before us, with a gravity & vibrancy beyond our imagination. I feel honored just to witness it every time I see it.
I am glad I am not the only one who idealizes JQA. He is underrated and misunderstood! His ideas were a head of his time! Teddy Roosevelt did what he wanted to do 50 years later and got credit!

I watch films. Lots of them. Turner Classic Movies is a good place to start. This scene. Which, is almost 15 minutes long....moves me like none other's I have ever seen. He was nominated for an Oscar for this performance. But. For me, it is his words that move me, and should be relevant even today.

Freedom, democracy and independence are fine when they suit us, but when they don't it's very easy to forget all about them.. :/

I've recently come to the conclusion that all our civilized achievements even as a concept.. Constitutions, freedom, democracy, civil liberties, human rights etc. are only a luxury we can afford to enjoy as long as things in our society are going well and people can live as decent human beings.. But once things start going badly most people usually turn to violence, extremism and forget all about civilized behavior..
I'm pretty sure that most people in the West would be behaving in a similar fashion as people in the Middle East, Africa or Latin America if they were suffering just the same.. or if they were suffering like the Germans in the 30s.. And I don't think that's an exaggeration..
It's no coincedence that we had so frequently wars in Europe up until a century ago.. It was because people's living standards were that low.. Poverty was a basic factor that often led to conflict.. And America was of course reduced to the status of the "Wild West" with lots of conflict for the exact same reason..
I fear we still have a very long way ahead of us as a species before we reach Utopia.. :/

In fact, the Amistad case revolved around the Atlantic slave trade - by 1840 outlawed by international treaty - and had nothing whatsoever to do with slavery as a domestic institution. Incongruous as it may seem, it was perfectly possible in the nineteenth century to condemn the importation of slaves from Africa while simultaneously defending slavery and the flourishing slave trade within the United States

It is not incongruous...the amistas case opened the gateway to ending slavery domestically...educate yourself

Btw the main body of the US Constitution declared that the Atlantic Slave Trade is to be outlawed effective 1808. The US Navy, once it became something of substance, actually put US warships off the coast of Africa to enforce this abolition of the Atlantic Slave Trade. This was before the Civil War. You would know this if you didn’t get your “education” from Tik Tok.

Always makes me cry. Especially when he mentions his father....I just lose it. It's so powerful, especially from a Black man such as myself. There really were people back then who wanted to make a difference for us, even if just a little change...

An the awestruck face of Morgan Freeman, as the guy he plays recognizes that JQA points out the obvious: slavery is a contradiction to the promises of the American Revolution.

It is a shame the US has never gotten the Adams Memorial Project for the National Mall off the ground. John, Abigail, and John Quincy contributed as much to our country as anyone else with a memorial there. I would put it right next to the Jefferson Memorial so they are as intertwined in history as they were in life.
